Robocop Making His Pro Wrestling Debut

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Turkey Pardoning

Babymech says...

Uh, what? It's not supposed to be flattering, it's just sad and true - the people who have seen the video that is probably being referenced at the beginning, unwittingly watched child porn. Which sucks. If you haven't seen the video, good for you.

dannym3141 said:

..That's not really the same as saying "everyone has watched child porn and so have i." The first comment is not flattering to you, i know i wouldn't want it said of me.

Cenk Uygur debates Sam Harris

billpayer says...

@enoch agree 100%. You got it.

@gwiz665 @Ashenkase @Taint Wow. Were you listening? Did we see the same video ? Harris made not one legitimate point.

Sam Harris has proven himself to be an ignorant warmongering bigot, holding one set of rules for Christianity and Judaism, whilst vilifying Islam in an utterly unreasonable way. The same acts carried out by Christianity and Judaism are excused. If a muslim had suggested the things Harris is quoted as saying there would be international outrage, water boarding or worse. As Cenk aptly put it, all religions are equally guilty.

Begging Cenk to pull the Reza Aslan video was just sad and sickening, crying that he had no chance at recourse whilst being interviewed for 3 hours.. pathetic.

Jon Stewart Goes After Fox in Ferguson Monologue

newtboy says...

No. That's simply wrong.
Cops MAY need to use more force than they are met with, they certainly do NOT need to escalate to violence every time they take someone into custody (as your post suggests)...if they did, why didn't they beat up and/or shoot the Governor of Texas?!?
There's a huge range of action they can take between doing nothing and using overwhelming deadly force. Cops that think they should use the maximum amount of force possible, to 'protect themselves' should not be cops, those are cowardly bullies with immunity and guns.
If the proper thing is to use the most force possible, why are cops given pepper spray, tasers, batons, hand to hand combat training, radios, Kevlar gloves, etc. ? In this instance, ANY of those could have been tried before shooting someone retreating, surrendering, and far enough away for any of them to be tried.
From my viewpoint, this was likely more about the cop being pissed he was ignored when he told them to stop than any fear he had of two youths that were leaving the scene, and about them 'respecting his authoratah'. That's not an acceptable reason to shoot a person....even if they're black.
For you, as a cop, to claim you should always be MORE violent than your suspect means YOU are the violent criminal (or at best, an advocate for being violently criminal)...so perhaps a cop needs to come to your home based on an anonymous tip and shoot you in the head?!?...why would you say not?...you're armed and angry and advocating deadly violence!
Cops are supposed to DE-escalate violent situations, not aggravate and escalate them. It's not just sad but frightening to hear you, a self professed long term cop, to say the exact opposite. Once again I'll ask, where are you located. If you are representative of the police there, I truly want to avoid your stomping grounds.
To me, your stance means I should meet officers with deadly force, because if they decide they 'fear' me, they'll use deadly force on me without hesitation, so killing them first is always self defense. I don't think you thought it through to conclusion saying they should always be MORE violent.

lantern53 said:

Cops have to be one step more violent than the people they must take into custody. That's a simple fact. That is the use of force continuum. You can probably google it.

But people who have no knowledge of it or think a cop can 'shoot the guy in the hand' will never understand it.

I was mostly just sad that the rotation didn't sync with the camera's framerate and produce a steady-ish image. Like the reverse of old TV where car wheels would look like they were going backwards.

#LikeAGirl -- attitudes exposed and transformed

bareboards2 says...

Fuck all, that is a shit load of mansplaining that happened in the last two long posts. Holy hell on a handstick.

Next time the topic of "mansplaining" comes up elsewhere, and folks need an example, the last two comments are the gold standard.

I know that this comment will offend those two posters, and those who think like they do. I'm not going to argue back and forth about it though, because I have learned that is a waste of time. If I thought I could move things, I would engage. I'm older and wiser now.

Besides, I'm offended, too, so we're even.

[edit]
Actually, what I really am is sad. Sad at the cluelessness. The depth of the cluelessness. I started out offended, and wrote the above. But the more I think on it, I'm just sad at the complete lack of understanding. Sad at their need to argue. Sad at the lack of emotional empathy.

And happy at the growing number of people who "get it."

There is hope for the future.

Oakland CA Is So Scary Even Cops Want Nothing To Do With It

Trancecoach says...

> "I have little love for the state, but I do see a need for some actual 'higher power' (religious one's don't cut it) to further society in less harmful directions."

A "lesser evil" is still evil. I find this a contradiction at best. But you don't, so no need to get into it. So far you seem to be saying that such a "higher power" is or has to be the state, even though you say don't love the state.

> "If you feel a discussion is me forcing beliefs on you, that's just sad to me."

A "discussion" does not force beliefs on anyone. I understand that you are just stating/declaring what you believe. And like I said, I don't think your vote counts for much, so I can't even say that you are forcing your political view on me or on anyone else. So no, I don't think you are forcing anything on me, just stating your beliefs that I can chose to ignore.

> "To me, that means you're closed to any discussion that's not preaching to your choir, or to put it another way, you're only interested in mental masturbation, no distractions."

I'm not sure what you are interested in, so I can't really comment on it.

> "we obviously draw it in differing places, I'm OK with that."

Of course, you have to be ok with it because you can't really do anything about it one way or the other.

>"You need enough like minded people to vote thoughtfully and rationally and it will."

Good luck with that. I predict failure in this. But what do I know? And again, I am not stopping you. Go ahead and convince or find as many like-minded people as you need and vote to your heart's content. Obviously, I won't be one of those who agrees with you, as we have different ideas on what "thoughtfully" and "rationally" means. Voting is your strategy to get what you want out of the state. That's ok. That's your choice. Good luck. It obviously holds little to no interest to me. But I don't need to convince any "like-minded" people to do anything. I can just act on my own and take advantage of all the many ways there are to opt out.

> "So, you don't vote? No wonder you have no representation, that's your fault though.""

Wrong. None of the candidates represent me, so this is an idiotic thing to say. Who should I have voted for that would have "represented" me? Last I checked, there were two heinous options available. And unless there's a tie, your vote simply does not count. And then, will they do what I want them to do even when elected? Sorry. Waste of my time. But again, vote to your heart's content. I'm glad for you that you are being so well represented by your politicians of choice.

>"I can't find a group that fits me (or vice versa)."

Even more remarkable then that you have "representatives" that adequately "represent' you.

You are fortunate in so many ways.
Good for you.

Oakland CA Is So Scary Even Cops Want Nothing To Do With It

newtboy says...

If you change your citizenship to wherever you move they can't tax you anymore...why can't 'free marketers' buy a whole country and try it out fo realsies?
The country and state are owned by us all, we are represented by our government (no matter how poorly). Did school not teach you how that's set up? It should have.
You are saying it SHOULD be all private, which would make it the same thing with no recourse to move out of it, just to different controllers, the new one's not even elected or replaceable. Bad move.
Thank you, the implication that I'm unworthy of discussion with, then continued discussion was at best, odd.
I say the present government sucks, and sucks worse in some places than others. I'm saying we can make it better if we elect better reps, but never perfect for everyone, just not possible. I agree that there's too much 'governing' with far too little result, but I disagree that the answer is to stop governing.
I am surrounded by both cool people and losers, but we're spread out enough that it's easier to ignore the losers from here. I got lucky.
I do, I vote. That's how it's set up to be done, if people were more thoughtful, it would work better.
I only pointed out my situation because you had apparently decided I'm a worthless taker, and that's a mistaken assumption (but an understandable one, I'm odd).
Are you saying I said that 'who cares what you think'? because I never meant to. If you are saying that yourself, that's a problem for rational discussion.
I have little love for the state, but I do see a need for some actual 'higher power' (religious one's don't cut it) to further society in less harmful directions.
If you feel a discussion is me forcing beliefs on you, that's just sad to me. To me, that means you're closed to any discussion that's not preaching to your choir, or to put it another way, you're only interested in mental masturbation, no distractions.
There are degrees of being 'left alone'...just as there are degrees of 'able to do anything that doesn't HARM another'...it's about where you draw the line of 'left alone' or 'harm another'...we obviously draw it in differing places, I'm OK with that.

Trancecoach said:

> "By your logic, taxes are voluntary, you can choose not to live in the US and you don't get thrown in jail for not paying them."

Not true at all. The US will tax you wherever you live. "If you don't like it move" is totally different from "if you don't like it, don't buy this condo." The condo has an owner selling it under some conditions. The "country" or "state" has no "owner" whatever you might think.

> "Again, you claim you don't care about my thoughts, but you continue to prove you do by responding"

I grant you that.

> "but we do have control, we simply need to assert it in thoughtful ways, not react out of fear of the possible future. That's my viewpoint anyway."

You say government sucks and yet, you say something to the effect of, "It doesn't feel that way from where I sit, at my reserved table at the Bohemian Grove, surrounded by cool people, not you losers."

Go ahead and "control" the government. Like I said, no one's stopping you. Do whatever you want from your beautiful acre of orchard and 100% paid for home. Enjoy it.

And if you don't like my tax ideas, who cares what you think?

However you justify your love for the state, that's ok. You're entitled to it. You aren't entitled to any actions that attempt to force your beliefs on me or anyone. Of course you'll try. But as Satochi Nakamoto (or any plutocrat) has (implicitly) said: :-P Good luck with that.

It seems more and more that libertarians and plutocrats, while not in agreement about means, do share the same goal: to be left alone by "the people."

Black Range Rover Runs Over Bikers in NYC

newtboy says...

I guess that blows Chairman_Woo's theory that the driver MUST have instigated the bikers behavior out of the water.
Reports are that this same group does this ride yearly, and then goes to central park (I think) and causes major trouble...fights, bike tricking, riding on foot paths, intimidating any non-bikers...I'm just sad more bikes weren't destroyed and more fags hurt. (Good on you littledragon_79)

Drax said:

The current report is the driver called 911 due to the eradic behaviour of the bikers. When they realized he was calling the police (I'm guessing that moment is the guy looking into the window which I commented on earlier) they went after him.

Bad Ventriloquist Bombs Hard on Stage... Gives Up Mid Act.

VoodooV says...

apparently "established" ventriloquist doesn't mean good ventriloquist

Granted, This isn't funny, it's just sad. Like other people have already said, I feel bad for her.

But if she was at all experienced, I would think she would do a better job even if she was rushed into this and be able to think on her feet a little better. At the very least, I would think she would have done a better job of hiding her lips moving and doing a voice that at least TRIED to sound different from her normal voice.

This doesn't seem like an instance of someone merely choking on stage. This seems more like a situation where someone thought doing a ventriloquist act would be super easy and just didn't think it through

Man beats ticket on dashcam evidence - takes town to court

newtboy says...

The officer needs to be charged and convicted of perjury.
All police involved need an official complaint on their permanent record to halt any advancement in their career, one from the judge would be GREAT! I'm just guessing, but I bet if they skip the next court date, they'll all have a warrant out for their arrest, how great would that be!
I'm just sad he could only sue for $2000, I think treble damages is warranted in this situation, and it should come out of the officers pay/pension.

47 Ronin

newtboy says...

I understand why they did it, I'm just sad it's necessary in order to sell tickets when you have such a compelling, action packed historical story to tell. I fear the lessons of the Bushido code, loyalty beyond death, patience, sacrifice, and even well thought out vengeance may be lost in this flashy version in favor of fighting dragons with gaijen. I guess I'll watch Cushingura again.

Fletch said:

You realize that this is a movie, right?
Granted, I don't know the story of the real 47 ronin, or that there even was a real story, so I had no expectations before I watched the trailer. Movies are supposed to be entertaining. While I personally would love to see a historically accurate version of this story (now that I know there is one), it probably wouldn't sell as many tickets. Be glad they didn't throw in some giant robots.
