John Carpenter's 'The Thing' - Runaway Alien Head

mizila says...

>> ^Revenant2428:

Seeing this again after just playing Dead Space 2 makes me think that this movie had to be a huge inspiration to the devs that made the Dead Space games.

Also, "The Thing" is actually a pretty kickass game for the first xbox and ps2 that serves as a sequel for the movie. John Carpenter helped with production and even has a character in it modeled after him. As a third-person survival game with lots of action, half-human alien-bug monsters, and the isolation of the Antarctic base it's basically an early Dead Space. If you see it in a bargain bin somewhere pick it up, good times will be had.

The Thing prequel (2011) trailer

I was hoping for a sequel because they left that possibility wide open at the end of the John Carpenter's version. 'The Thing' (John's version) is still my all time favorite horror flick.

John Carter (of Mars) - First Trailer - Disney

Sagemind says...

I swear Mars looks a lot like earth in this film - I call fake, I don't think they ever left earth to film this. It may have been filmed on a sound stage using bit background footage filmed right here on earth. John Carter...? I I say John Carpenter because this is a conspiracy!

What I Am Legend would have looked like with non-CG monsters

IMO, the best (and most imaginative) practical effects / creature(s) are in John Carpenter's The Thing. Hands down. Rob Bottin really out did himself on that one.

@ Sagemind - WETA is a superior effects company. I find it amusing that Peter Jackson started out baking alien masks in his mum's kitchen oven. Which reminds me, another great prosthetic effects movie is Braindead (aka Dead Alive).

halloween opening credits-only the best music intro ever!

Did you know that John Carpenter himself composed this music? He also wrote the wonderful Escape From New York theme, in fact, Carpenter composes music for basically all his movies. He's truly a Renaissance man!

The Bechdel Test for Women in Movies

ponceleon says...

The Thing (1984) Dir. John Carpenter

At first it would seem that this movie does not pass the test... HOWEVER, it really does pass it with flying colors if you think about one fact: the actual "thing" is a female! Therefore:

1. There are definitely more than 1 thing at different points in the movie.
2. There are definitely points in the movie where the things talk to each other.
3. They definitely talk to each other about the thing, which as we have determined, is femenine, thus meeting the criteria of this one as well.

The Thing, Feminist supermovie!

The Thing: Redubbed

Opus_Moderandi says...

That was great! At first I was thinking it would be sacrilegious because John Carpenter's The Thing is the best horror movie using practical effects ever made (well, that and George Romero's Day of the Dead) but, I lol'd.

Exthellent.

Guy Movies (Cinema Talk Post)

videosiftbannedme says...

Ok, so now that I'm home looking at my wall of DVD's, I can comment.

Gattaca - one of my favs. Achieving your dreams against the impossible.

The Thing - Big John Carpenter fan here.
Big Trouble in Little China - ditto.
Escape from New York - in triplicate.

Predator - I'm surprised nobody said this one yet. There should be a Predator channel. All Predator, all the time.

Tremors - Silly, but also just a good old-fashioned monster movie.

Die Hard - What Drax said.

Heavy Metal - A guy film to me because I have yet to meet a girl who likes it as much as I do.
Pink Floyd The Wall - see above.

Leon - Masterpiece.

Midnight Run - "Will you shut the fuck up!?!?!?"

Touching the Void - one of the best documentaries I've seen. Plus I love mountain climbing, so I'm partial.

Mr. Rogers Talks About Games

14342 says...

Ahh, yes! Mr. Keith David!
He also portrayed 'King', in Platoon; the Arbiter on Halo 3, and Julius in the Saints Row series.
John Carpenter directed (and cast?)him in - They Live, and The Thing.

Fox Interviewer : "So, Keith, exactly did you go from 'Keith the Southwood Carpenter' on a popular child's T.V. show,
to a pot-smoking soldier, (Oliver Stone's) to a
top selling Sci-horror actor, to voice-over actor for the latest "M" rated
video games?"

Keith : "Good agent?"

Fox Interviewer : "Mr, David, do you hate yourself? Did you know that your performance in "Pitch Black" helped launch Vin Diesel's career?"

Keith : "Now hold on a minute! What's wrong with Vin Deisel?"

Fox Interviewer : "I'm asking the questions here! Not Mr Rodger's "Donkey Kong man"! "
