The Death Couloir - Mont Blanc

StukaFox says...

Therein lies the problem: most people HUGELY over-estimate their 'Acceptable risk level'.

- "This crumbling cliff edge above a 1,000 foot gorge is the PERFECT place for a selfie!" (one of the saddest deaths in WA was when one of the best skiers in the state decided to look over the edge of a cornice. It gave way and she fell almost a thousand feet to her death.)

- "100f and 0% humidity? What a perfect time to go for a 10 mile, uphill hike with only a can of Coke and some salty beef jerky!"

- "10 essentials? Beer, pot, lighter, cellphone, hat, earbuds, that little map they give you at the visitor center, more beer and is that 10?"

- "I can read a map just fine! This off-trail hike through a rugged part of the park will be breeze!"

- "I can get signal anywhere in this enormous national forest!"

- "Aww! What a cute little baby bear!"

- "Can we get an Uber at the bottom of this ravine?"

- "Let's go swimming! This raging river of snow melt will be the perfect place to cool off!"

etc etc etc

Rate the daily danger level, sure, and allow adults to choose their acceptable risk level.

Dashcam Video Of Alabama Cop Who Shot Man Holding His Wallet

newtboy says...

I also know nothing more than the video shows.

Would I do that? no, but I'm paranoid and have a terrible estimation of average police. That said, I don't think he did either. The jerky movements were because his door closed on him unexpectedly, making him drop his wallet. Without that accident making him fumble, wallet in raised hands shouldn't be scary.

Don't get me wrong, I agree it's not smart to have anything in your hands until cops are seemingly feeling safe because they're known to overreact with deadly force over nothing...but it's not fair to anyone to expect everyone to be terrified of police enough to sit perfectly still until told exactly what to do, with failure to do so ending in being shot. That ends with more citizens and more cops shot over nothing but fear.

Khufu said:

Don't know the full story, but all I'm saying is that if a cop is coming up to your car, even if he doesn't have his gun drawn, would you be all jerky like that and pull your wallet out in front of you will both hands really fast? from the cop's point of view it would have appeared very much like the guy was pulling a gun. Not saying the cop was right, just that if I was playing the game I mentioned I would have shot him too. but I'm not a cop so....

He opened his door prepared to show ID. The door closed on him. He never "pointed" his wallet (as if that's even possible) at all, he caught it when the door made him almost drop it, then immediately put both hands in the air, showing them both clearly and got shot for it....shot in a way that was totally unsafe for the other citizen approaching from the truck who was almost shot too.

Your take seems to be excusing this shooting, which is inexcusable.

4K 60fps Photo Realism With Unreal 4 Engine

newtboy says...

I mostly agree, but I did think the static interior shots were photo realistic, but I don't have a 4k screen.
If you smoothed out the jerky camera motion, the last scene had climbed out of the uncanny valley, imo....except the flame.

ChaosEngine said:

This is a really good example of showing what video game graphics are really good at (static scenes with hard materials) and what they're not so good at but getting better (natural organic materials, humans with complex animations).

That said, as impressive as it is, we are still a long way off "photo realism".

How To Cook A Cheap Steak Vs. An Expensive Steak

Mystic95Z says...

Yep, no marinades here too when cooking a good cut of beef. My fav is a nice grilled Porterhouse. About the only thing I marinate is beef strips i've cut up from a roast to dry for beef jerky.

RFlagg said:

I really dislike marinades. I want the steak. Pure. Simple.

I like Ribeye, but there ends up being so much thick fat cut to the side, that I feel I got ripped off, and my 12 oz steak is basically an 8 oz worth of edible meat, while the New York Strip gives more meat for the buck, and if done properly is normally good enough.

ASAP Science- Are Good-Looking People Jerks?

oblio70 says...

The flaw I also see is with the "distribution". I question the equal spread of good-looking & nice, good-looking & jerky, etc...I think on one hand, we would qualify more people as jerks, while on the other hand every one of us has adequately qualified as a jerk in someones eyes at some point.

Also, we tend to over-emphasize the negative with the less-than intimate/familiar, much like how 99% of the News is really sucky stuff.

Korean Girls Try American BBQ For the First Time

newtboy says...

?
Having sauce on it doesn't make it not BBQ, but ONLY having sauce on it doesn't make baked meat BBQ either. If it's slow smoked with a spicy rub, but not smoked to dry jerky, I say that qualifies as BBQ.
Sour pulled pork? Something's not right. Mine is almost too sweet, but I use a brown sugar and pepper based rub.
They all need to be served with large-cut sweet onion. That's the proper side for all BBQ in my eyes....but I was raised in Texas, so I have a very particular idea of what makes BBQ good.

AeroMechanical said:

A lot of folks wouldn't consider that proper BBQ. I mean, it's got sauce on it for god's sake.

An Animated Nutcracker -- as in Hip Hop Animation

bareboards2 says...

Actually it is called Animation, and Cyrus is a master of it. Although it is probably a mixture -- nobody is a purist anymore.

From Wiki:
Animation
A style and a technique where you imitate film characters being animated by stop motion. The technique of moving rigidly and jerky by tensing muscles and using techniques similar to strobing and the robot makes it appear as if the dancer has been animated frame by frame. This style was heavily inspired by the dynamation films created by Ray Harryhausen, such as The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958).

And if you look at the list of male contestants, you'll see Cyrus having given himself the label of "animation."

No idea where the title came from. Has nothing to do with hip hop. It is a dance style called robot.

Clueless Gamer: "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 5"

Porn Actress Mercedes Carrera LOSES IT With Modern Feminists

GenjiKilpatrick says...

@newtboy With contentious topics like this, the conversation is barely "adult".

It's nitpicky and tangential because everyone thinks they alone are adding some great insight to the discussion.

@Babymech hopped on the "Anita doesn't owe anyone anything" cart.

@Trancecoach was closer to base but then got all "you see, it's really the blacks that are the problem"

@ChaosEngine choose the "well youtube comments are generally insulting & abusive.. therefore it's okay to block valid criticism too!"

Great, what does that have to do with the message of the speaker.
Or my point of "hey, why are you completely avoiding the overall message of the speaker"

Furthermore, what's the difference between Baby's condescending tone and my outright insults?

Both are belittling & incongruent with "adult" behavior/conversation.

Ultimately, he too is trying to swat down argument/opinion that doesn't mesh with his.

Regardless of my brash way of speaking, my points are still valid.

I do my research. I don't talk about topics I'm ignorant on.
And as I said, I was once a fan of Anita Sarkeesian and her videos.

Then I ran into her bullshit.

There's tons of evidence on youtube that points out Sarkeesian's hypocrisy.

So if you're uninformed, why not take it upon yourself.. to educate yourself.

You folks are barely any better then lantern or bobknight with your knee-jerky devils' advocate defense of a pseudo-intellectual prestige-hound who is unscrupulous in the way she pursues her agenda.

Next you're gonna tell me that somehow Bill Cosby isn't a date-rapist.

"Well you know, it was only 25-30 women with identical experiences/anecdotes. ..MJ is still definitely a pederast tho."

My point here is:

You all frame this video with your personal opinion BEFORE analyzing the entirety of it's message & context.

I get that, because it's a pot-stirrer.
But seriously, if you just think it out:

A - Gamergate is first world problem bullshit
B - It has garnered unwarranted hype and a counter-cult of white-knight SJW supporters.
C - It's being conflated with an ACTUAL very serious set of issues.
Online Harassment. Slut shaming. The depiction & plight of genders in pop culture. etc.
D - Actual victims & movements, ON BOTH SIDES, are being undermined by this frenzy.

Juxtapose that with the brutal home invasion & sexual assault..

Then ask yourself if the nitpicky personal opinion you're about to express maintains the situation & context.

Otherwise, you end up expressing terrible mindless thoughts like @Babymech.
in effect - "regardless of her peer's brutal rape.. she has no right to expect an outspoken proponent of women's rights.. to respond to her.. or call attention to the most disparaged & vulnerable/easily victimized members of society, female sex workers"

This is why the videosift community can barely be taken seriously.

It's like 4chan flamewars for boring old people.

..now everyone is on my case for [aggressively] pointing this out.

80s arcade with the Oculus Rift

Fransky says...

It looks ok, but he's only getting low 40s for a framerate. That is gonna be jerky as hell, and really hard on your stomach. VR certainly has potential, but I'm not sure whether this current generation will deliver on the hype.

Crazy Guy Runs Into Outback Tornado To Take Selfie

shveddy says...

Not sure about how I feel about this newfangled form of advertising.

They're trying to hijack the fact that authentic joy and excitement caught on tape can become popular on Youtube and make millions a little happier for watching it. Instead of just making you happy, however, their goal is to just sell you Jack Links beef jerky.

Don't fall for this and let the greedy corporate bastards corrupt another beautiful form of human expression; punish them by buying a different brand of beef jerky next time you go to the grocery store and watch these videos instead:
