R.I.P. to a horror movie legend...

I'm not really a Rob Zombie fan, but I absolutely love Spider Baby, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, and Monster Squad! Those are solid movies in my book.

I'm surprised to see Beware! The Blob... I didn't know someone made a sequel. Looks terrible but I love the old Blob theme song and Frank Darabont's remake of the Blob is in my top ten 80s horror movie list. Hell, it may be top ten all time horror.

I need to comb through his movie list and watch some b movies soon! I've already seen a lot of those blaxploitation flicks, but I've never seen Coffy. Looks like a fun movie.

great actors can't save a terrible script (see: almost everything DeNiro has done since Jackie Brown), but bad actors can ruin an otherwise decent movie.

Tarrantino's mash-up samples in his flicks are the greatest homage to other director's styles as well, it's what I can appreciate about his work the most...however hackneyed or stale, he mutates enough to stay on the grid, he's frikkin' full-blown and always will be the crazed genius.
Oh, and Jackie Brown kicks ass-

I disagree. QT knows exactly what he is doing. Some of his films are dialog driven (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown) and some are genre and/or action driven films (True Romance, Kill Bill, Inglorious Basterds). I have no doubt he is capable of writing another Pulp, and that one day he probably will, but for now he is doing high-art pastiche of the classic exploitation dramas he grew up with. This is not to say that these action films are less good than his dialog films, they just have different aesthetic criteria.
He is much like Speilberg in this way, if polar opposites in dialog and style. Speilberg has his serious movies, and he has his homages to the serial action films of his youth.
Prediction: Eventually Quentin will eventually get his fill of action films and create another magnum opus, and likely get himself an Oscar in the process. I would absolutely love for him to take his favorite film of recent times, Battle Royale, and make an American-culture-specific version - not a remake of the film, but a remake of the concept as it would occur if it played out with American high schoolers.
Also, comparing QT to Shayamalan is blasphemy. Even Shayamalan's best work was an average film with a great twist. Shayamalan has never shown even an ounce of the writing or directing skills that QT has. Take it back. TAKE IT BACK!!1!>> ^lucky760:

I no longer have any confidence Quentin will make another Reservoir Dogs- or Pulp Fiction-caliber film, and I've made my peace with that, but I will still eagerly await every one of his new projects with fervent anticipation.
(I just hope he never descends as far down as M. Night Shyamalan.)

Also, if you go through his films (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, the two Kill Bills (so far, a third has been announced), Grindhouse and then Inglourious Basterds), it's hard to pick a weak spot apart from Grindhouse which was a disaster and an excuse to film the best car chase in modern history. But even that was ambitious if not well executed.
I'm tempted to put Danny Boyle up there, but almost exclusively for Trainspotting which is my favourite film of all time, and Sunshine which I thought was brilliant.
Perhaps Tarantino could be given the nod for best writer/director in the modern era?


Good call on Danny Boyle. I haven't see Sunshine, but 28 Days Later is one of my favourites of all time, Shallow Grave was a great debut and Slumdog Millionaire was beautiful. But yeah, Tarantino, he's inimitable

I gotta say that tarentino for me burnt out in what, 1998? Starting with kill bill, he's released the most awful garbage. For someone whose first few films blew me away so much and was so ubiquitous during my childhood, i cannot believe the garbage this man is currently spewing forth in the form of films. And i loved all the standard ones - pulp fiction, reservoir dogs, jackie brown, etc.

A lot of people say "His films are tribute to <these> kinds of films! You just don't get it!" -- To that i say, well fair enough, but i've seen a few of those types of films and i enjoyed watching them. I didn't enjoy watching this film. If it's a tribute to a style of film it still has to be a good film.

There's a lot of fan boys for tarentino and m night shiteamalan. You can't just make an utter shit movie and say "it's a tribute to shit movies" ala "The Happening", you have to make it a good movie. Otherwise you could say every shit movie ever made is a tribute to shit movies.

And it's a crime to criticise these movies now. Criticise kill bill, the happening, those 2 grindhouse shitpiles, or inglorious basterds and you get laughed at: "LOL YOU DON'T GET IT LOL IT'S INTENTIONALLY SHIT"

Oh right, that makes it good then yeah!? I mean seriously, write me a list of all the movies that are unintentionally shit so that i can criticise them without embarassing myself, and leave all the intentionally shit movies alone or more likely laud them.
