Religion and mental illness part 1

Maybe,
But I suspect that the rational wonder you describe is like decaf coffee. To get the jolt of physiological benefits- you need real faith- to let go and let God. It’s the relinquishing of personal control for the outcomes in your life that brings on the bliss.

I disagree with your opinion. I look at someone like Richard Feynman with that fervent passion for life which shows in all the videos here and you see someone that definitely wasn't drinking decaf. An argument could be made that people like him are the exception, but I don't think that is the case.

Of course it is different for everyone, right? I was raised in a very strong Roman Catholic house and my parents have become more and more fundamentalist as they have become older. It is disturbing to me as I fall into the rather large "non-practicing Roman Catholic" group, but they do have a large group of friends from the church. I can see how their faith and religion connects them. But it is just one string of connection. That string is thick for them because it is something that is so important to them. So passionate for them.

I'm passionate about compassion and fairness, among other things. I have atheist, catholics, christians, reborn christians (actually only one because most are fake), buddhist, shamanistic, etc... friends because of our shared passion for compassion and fairness. Religion is the race of passions - i.e. it is very easy to "see" and then involuntarily or voluntarily push those people into our predefined groups.

I admit that I think being in a religious group is a good ice breaker in bringing people together. In that regard, I do agree with you; however, it is just about finding those other passion connectors. This has been hard for me since I'm a budding recluse, but that avenue is still there and the friends that I have made haven't been from any religious connection. Now in society I can find other people with my passions in a large city or somewhere on the internet. There are more avenues to find like-minded people. It's hard to sift through, but they exist.

In closing - I live in a majestic area. Water and a couple of mountain ranges on the horizons. When I sit down looking at the water with the mountains beyond and the cumulus nimbus clouds racing across the sky, a warm wondrous feeling consumes me. I'm not thinking about God at all. And I can assure you that it isn't decaf.

are you so insulated in your puter world that you have no clue about healthy human interaction?"

actually, I work all day from home with my girlfriend, she is sitting right beside me, all day. We interact like humans.
before I worked online I worked in an office, in a cubicle, I had much less human interaction from there.

can't you see that you are the kind of internet journalista/chronicler of the same ilk as the major media??

The only difference is Major Media is watched and accepted by Millions of viewers/readers on a daily basis...I type in internet forums were I am read by a couple dozen. Big difference.

that is why i always scream, "symptoms" when the "cause" should be addressed-

And that is what you want to do, then do it, don't piss on other users like myself and Japr for using the internet in the way they want. This is freedom man, breath it in, there might be a day when your wish is granted and "muckrakers" like myself will be booted into Jail and off the Internets (which is what I was threatened with when I posted for AOL Newsbloggers)

Dude, chill out, you are worth the trouble-simply trying to get you to see yourself through another pair-are you so insulated in your puter world that you have no clue about healthy human interaction? Not every flower has a pleasing odor, esp. the one's we cultivate-I only chime in ever so often as a form of regulation-i do not have it out for you-If I am the only voice of dissent, and that not simply in the form of no-vote or down-vote, you got it made-you are well-liked by the simple folk-I dig yer passion and dedication as well-really though, can't you see that you are the kind of internet journalista/chronicler of the same ilk as the major media?? I see no difference between you and msnbc, cnn, etc etc.....that is, most of the time....you do have your moments-I meant what I said about the muckraking, you and everyone else who points the finger at Bush and cries foul, when that tool could not tie his shoe w/o taking cues from the folks who put him there, and i don't mean the voters-ineffectual at best, and a solid 180 degrees from any real effect save that of taking the spotlight of the cause......that is why i always scream, "symptoms" when the "cause" should be addressed-

I will never ignore anyone, you should have figured that out by now-harass?? you seem to think I have singled you out-well, with great power comes great responsibility, yadda yadda-I am a check valve for a solid dam of 20-something bullshit here-i can't stand college kids for the most part, because the system is damaged-Besides, you Canadians seem to be a bit more proud of your culture than most Americans are of theirs-we share the same language, a common border, and some of the same culture-all of which are in danger of going the way of the dinosaur, and the mentalities of a lot of the folks on this site, are what is making it easy for this to take place-

When some congressman, senator, or president really fucks up bad, it will be because they risked everything to disclose information-not because they said something perceived racist, perceived hateful, etc.....

Carry-on man, I sincerely apologize for ruffling your fragile feathers, once again-(funny thing, blankfist slowed way down after i called him out, and I took a jab at JAPR, too.....JAPR talks to me now, and understands me a bit better, but bf????....he tucked-tail and let ego get the best of him-I am transparent, man-Conflict is a great ice-breaker for those riddled with testosterone-a healthy individual after a fight, often finds common ground with their opponent, after some blood shed-

Why Do ALL Europeans Hate America?

9410 says...

The irony of US media accusing the European media of propaganda.

When I went traveling I was meeting a lot of new people and getting to know them through language barriers was really hard work. There was however one subject which never failed to break the ice, and it almost inevitably started "What do you think of Bush?". America is viewed as a lumbering giant with little subtlety. Its no surprise, the US governments heavy handed politics, especially abroad, coupled with a media of half truths and lies has given The States a poor reputation. In many ways the media here is pandering to the publics tastes, its an ice breaker, a moment to laugh at those silly Yanks.

Its funny, almost without exception every single American I know tends to have the same views as myself. I live with 2 Americans, and I think they hate their country more than any European. I suppose the answer is that the Americans I meet have either left their country to travel, study abroad or even live abroad, or have spent enough time on the internet to be exposed to a world outside of there own. Trouble is, for every American I meet there are 10 who will never leave their country, 10 who watch Fox news and take it as fact and 10 who will sacrifice common sense to their God.

Anyway, I guarantee you if Obama wins the election anti-Americanism in Europe will drop noticeably.

OM(onu)G! They Took "Under God" Out of the Pledge!!

messenger says...

It's like singing, "O Canada" every morning in Canadian schools. Equally ridiculous on its face. I think the main function of these rituals is like an ice-breaker at a meeting -- it gets people focused on the task at hand. In this case, it's a minute or two where the students have to stand still and be quiet or sing. Getting them settled after that must be much easier.

blah blah blah...get this shit off the box, downvote for the voyeurs you've all digressed into....not raelly, but can't you see this shit everywhere, without pointing it out instead of doing something about it???!!
-the same dynamic as gawkers in NYC, who will watch a person beating another to death, without "getting involved", is at work here-

("WOW, look at the car wreck, those people have created an ice breaker for me to stop thinking about whats' real!!!")
