Street Harassment Of Women In New York - An Art Project

Lann says...

This video was touching on much more than smiling. That being said, it can be annoying when people TELL you to smile. It is a bit rude and sometimes embarrassing to single someone out like that especially if you don't know them or what they are going though.

Edit: Also, it doesn't take a large city like New York for constant cat calls to happen. Since the age of 11 I found it awkward to walk or ride a bike to the mall or any other crowded area as I would get honked or yelled and that's coming from a medium/small city in Montana. I'm glad to now live in a place where people typically respect each other's privacy in public.

Well, If they'd just smile, we wouldn't need this.
I don't live in a big city like New York so obviously I just don't understand...

But, what's wrong with Smiling? Saying, "Smile" is like saying, "Cheer up"
I say it to both guys and women alike. I don't feel like being friendly and nice to strangers is a negative thing. My point is, I'd hate for something like this to stop people from trying to share some cheer. It's sort of a catch all reaction to something specific.

World War Two Movie Making Gone Wrong

And typical non-cyclist response. Nothing new to see here either.

All I see is a bunch of assholes who honk at me, try to hit me on purpose (one intentionally ran me over), and hundreds of people a day with absolutely no respect for someone else's life. And all that happened while in the bike lane. Oh, the guy who ran me over? He hit me because I WAS obeying traffic laws. Both the person behind him and the officer both concurred.

So yeah, nothing new to see here, right?

Black Range Rover Runs Over Bikers in NYC

shatterdrose says...

Found the video on another site since YouTube no longer has it. http://www.radiolive.co.nz/VIDEO-Bikers-chase-Range-Rover-through-New-York-City/tabid/673/articleID/38178/Default.aspx

After watching it, I must say, if I was the RR driver, a lot more bikers would be dead. The bikers got off easy from the looks of it. The RR could have swerved into them while they were riding up past him, could have aimed for them etc. Hell, if it had been me, the first guy that came and tried to open the door up wouldn't be alive anymore. And neither would the guy busting open my window.

But hey, that's just the way I'd react to a gang of bikers purposely harassing myself and my kid.

Then again, as a cyclist, I just call the cops and file a report when someone driver slights me purposely. And as many have said, we don't know what happened before the segment posted, but I would wager a fair bit of money that the most the RR would have done was yell at them or honk, or in the midst of a sudden onrush of motorcycles while trying to change lanes freaked out and didn't know what to do.

Stopping may be a tradition, but it seems silly. Unless you see a hearse, how is one supposed to divine that the traffic jam is indeed a funeral procession and not Great Gramgram meesin' up everyone's Sunday? ...I guess you have the guy in the green GMC honk and try to run people off the road.

Also, how the F did only 1 car get hit?!

Horrible Job Interview

Sagemind says...

I just like how it all comes back around.

Some guy sitting at a stop light is startled and confused over some Deja-vu scenario he is going through. She is there to witness it, annoyed, and unwittingly falls into the same schism, as she is set on a similar path.

Only this time, the guy having the original hallucination becomes that delusion and she sees him not once but twice during her experience.
It ends with her being the person sitting at the green light in the Deja-vu scenario, the same as the first guy, with someone behind her honking.

The twist is that her delusion is a strange loop of the first guy's delusion.

We are left to wonder how the first guy's delusion started and continued and we are left to wonder who will next take on the delusional loop - the person behind her, honking, maybe?

I don't agree with @Orz's explaination. This story held no allusions to stereotypes, opinions of others, equality or anything else like that. (at all) That' just reading things into it that aren't there..
I saw a great loop of events that make you stop and think wow, that's some messed up trippy Twilight Zone stuff right there..

I'll try to summarize it for you based on YT comments and personal feelings. Jenny Clarkson (aka Hannah) encounters 3 different yet visually similar people in the course of the day: a distracted driver, a potential boss and a homeless man. She allows common stereotypes and her personal feelings on the matter to drive the opinions she "voices" both mentally and reactionally. The real point is, everybody is human. We let stereotypes and our own personal sense of being "the center of the universe" (a fact which some will try to deny) compel the actions and reactions of our daily lives. We assume things about others and form immediate opinions of situations and encounters as a kind of built-in survival mechanism. Although many of us wish we could treat people equally all of the time, those opinions whether expressed or not will always exist.

To quote Darwin from S01E09 of SeaQuest DSV, "The center of the universe is in you."

TYT - Chris Wallace Nails Paul Ryan to the Wall

messenger says...

Wallace didn't ask for all the details. He just asked ballpark how much the 20% comes out to without reference to the loopholes. If Ryan can confidently say that with the loopholes closed it's revenue neutral, then he must be able to say the amounts on each side.

Also, if it's revenue neutral, that means on average, Romney/Ryan are promising precisely nothing except uncertainty about whether you'll go up or down.>> ^VoodooV:

did Paul Ryan just admit that torture doesn't work? That's gotta honk off the Republican establishment.
In Ryan's defense though. The budget is this insanely complicated thing. He's absolutely correct that you can't just give a few sound bites that adequately summarizes things up. We live in a complex world, you can't reduce lots of things into sound bites that will satisfy the armchair politicians

Insane 18 wheeler driver scares the crap out of Motorists

alcom says...

I totally agree. The trucker didn't deserve the honk at the end, which shows how unaware the driver with the dash cam was. Both car drivers in this vid were driving to hurried and close, the jerk in the minivan being the most dangerous.

>> ^Nexxus:

I'll be honest, I don't see anything wrong with his driving. He followed his lane markings while the camera car's lane just ended. Then he overtook the slower truck and while trying to get back in the slow lane, the jerk in the SUV made things very difficult for him and he had to jam on the brakes. If anything, the SUV is at fault here for dangerous driving.

Why did the guy in India cross the road?
