Jim Carrey reacts to Will Smith Chris Rock Slap @ The Oscars

cloudballoon says...

More likely, if Rock is to press charges. It'll be settled out of court. No one wants the hassle to drag this out in public (too risky for PR) and Rock & Smith probably don't want to piss off Hollywood either.

The DA however, should press charges. It's the only way to show people big shots are not above the law.

I had heard that not only is he selling out now, tickets are $750!! That said, in a month when the excitement dies down, who’s to say it won’t swing the other way.

And there’s the damage to his reputation, if not his career, that is also worth something. Not $500million, but you start big…who knows, maybe Will would hand it over to escape. He’s got it.

I think the appropriate measure is what would Will say was enough restitution if someone did that to his loved one, wife or child, on an international broadcast…that’s what he owes Chris’s family. That’s got to be in the hundreds of millions, not a few thousand….but I don’t decide so my opinion is moot.

Edit: really, I think the DA should press charges. He doesn’t need Chris, he’s got it on video from a dozen angles. Case closed.

Pipe Lining - the step-by-step process - Part II

mxxcon says...

So much work and hassle...Wouldn't it be cheaper and faster just to get a new set of replacement pipes? They had to dig it out, cut it out, line it, then put it back in, etc etc. Seems like just replacing with new pipes would be a better process.

Mass Shootings On The Rise

newtboy says...

53 shot and 7 dead isn't enough to warrant a mention?! Holy fuck, this country has really gone down the shitter in the last few years.
Even the guy who mailed over 15 pipe bombs to Democrats as intended acts of domestic terrorism only got 20 years today....<1 1/3 year per attempted terroristic mass murder. Is that just because the right wing terrorist is a Trump supporter who targeted Trump's enemies list?
Granted, with more than one per day on average, the shock value is diminished.

We didn't have either excuse, and my parents never got the braces I was prescribed for horrific tmj, not aesthetics. (They got them for my brother's crooked teeth though) My jaw still cracks and locks up 35 years later. I think some parents will use any excuse to avoid the expense and hassle of braces.

BSR said:

I think you have to meet a certain quota of dead and injured now, otherwise it would be nothing but mass shootings everyday and then it would be just too humdrum.

You know, for a while there, with the poor economy and the school shootings, parents were reluctant to spend money to put braces on their children's teeth.

Kavanaugh: No More Nineties Reboots, Please | Full Frontal

Mordhaus jokingly says...

When I was 18, I happened to be in Ottawa visiting a friend at the University. I was attending a party there and I was pretty smashed. I remember some woman attacking me, I'm pretty sure it was Samantha Bee. Thankfully I managed to stagger away drunkenly before she was fully successful.

I didn't want to bring it up before now, but I don't care for the way she is hassling rich white men, so I decided I needed to finally say something. Can we get the RCMP to investigate and get her show off the air in the meantime?

Yes, I know I have no evidence and it is my word versus hers, but why would I say something like this if it wasn't true? I know in the years since there hasn't been a hint of her trying to assault anyone else, but she probably is really good at hiding it or just buys them off.

confederate flag demonstration outside Bay City Western High

Mordhaus says...

Kids is a channel for stuff that might appeal to kids, not racism. I'm unsure how this applies to religion. Politics would only apply if the political leaders vocally supported the demonstration. War on terror also doesn't apply as this isn't a terrorist attack or a response to one.

Teens might apply, Fail definitely does, and Education does only in the context that this involved school aged teens outside of a high school.

That said, even though it is something we can all agree we dislike, it is their right to display what they like as long as it doesn't violate lewdness laws. They can't be charged or hassled over it by law enforcement or political officials. They COULD be punished for it if they were parking on school owned grounds, but it sounds like they were parked across from the school property.

The one tag that would have fit perfectly was equality, since it is for this type of thing.

In any case, this sucks. Kids shouldn't be doing this type of thing because racism is horrible. If you had correctly labeled this video, I would have likely voted for it.

Starbucks meetup ends with handcuffs for 2 patrons

CrushBug says...

Can you cite your sources, please? I have not heard this information. What I had heard matches some of what you said.

The information I read on several news sites (CNN, WaPo, and I forget the thrid) all said similar things to what you said, except that the 2 were waiting for a friend to arrive, who happened to arrive just as they were being led out.

They were not customers, yet. Why buy anything before your friend arrives, if he is buying the drinks?

I am white and I have never once been hassled at a Starbucks for showing up and hanging out with my laptop, going to the bathroom, or doing anything for any amount of time.

I don't think we can ignore that they were black, and it sounds like they were getting grief pretty early on in their stay.

newtboy said:

Actual information is coming out now.

They were not customers.
They were asked politely to make a purchase or leave.
They refused to leave and tried to use the customers only rest room after being told they could not without making a purchase, then sat down in defiance of the manager, taking a table in the busy business and disturbing the staff.

This had nothing to do with race and everything to do with false entitlement and eventually trespassing. It's a private business, not a public lounge. Don't leave when asked, get free bracelets.

The Adpocalypse: What it Means

MilkmanDan says...

I agree that NoScript tends to make it a hassle to get basic functionality out of the vast majority of the web. You have to play around with allowing scripts from some domains and not others, on pretty much every page you visit.

...Which is pretty scary, if you think about it. Are all of those cross-site scripts beneficial or even necessary from a user standpoint? Hell no. Users stand to gain nothing from all that crap running. From our perspective, they just increase load times and data usage, often compounded with auto-reloading. We should have control over that stuff in all circumstances, but it becomes absolutely critical in mobile internet where we generally don't have as much processing power AND the vast majority of people have data usage caps.

Basically what I'm saying is, the admitted fact that NoScript tends to make the web unusable is a symptom of a deeper problem with how the web is constructed these days.

If you like the idea of NoScript, but generally find it too high-maintenance, you might want to try Privacy Badger. It requires somewhat less user input with regards to which trackers/scripts get blocked, instead going with defaults based on "trustworthiness" as measured by algorithms from the EFF. Those defaults can be tweaked if you desire, also.

I usually run a Firefox (or Pale Moon) client that is extremely locked down. UBlock Origin, NoScript, Privacy Badger, Self-Destructing Cookies, sometimes Ghostery, etc. I use that as my default browser, and take the time to fine-tune the controls in NoScript, element hiding in uBlock, etc. for sites that I visit regularly.

But frequently, I'll find a link to some article that I want to read and notice that the page content won't load at all since it requires some nonsensical script. In those cases, if I don't want to take the time to fiddle with NoScript etc. permissions, I copy the URL and fire up Chrome in incognito mode, with only uBlock Origin.

Probably not worth the hassle for most people, but I guess I'm kicking and screaming my way into this brave new world.

ChaosEngine said:

Just for the record, I do run ad block plus on chrome.

@00Scud00, I used to run noscript, but it pretty much made the web unusable, or I spent so much time enabling js on certain sites it wasn't worth it.

Tank Restorers Discover Gold Bars Hidden in ex Iraqi Tank

AeroMechanical says...

Where do you get a scale that has stones for a unit? I want one of those.

Also, I wouldn't have reported it. Too much hassle. I'm sure there is gold involved in a tank's construction somewhere. So, you know, it's just a component.

It's probably stamped. Probably belongs to a Kuwaiti bank. Nah, too much hassle.

Navy SEAL on real martial arts

newtboy says...

I'll take a shot (I own, but I don't carry).

Concealed carry doesn't advertise to everyone that you're armed, saving one from continuous hassle by anti gun people. It also leaves attackers unsure who might be armed, meaning some will think twice before attacking a stranger.

Comcast Repairmen Unconcerned Of Wrecks They Are Causing

Mordhaus says...

Not sure if they have it set up like they do elsewhere and the way other companies do it (like Time Warner/Spectrum did here in Austin), but most of these workers will likely be contractors and the only relation to Comcast they will have is the name on the trucks.

The modus operandi was, and maybe still is, issue an apology, fire the specific contractor, and hire another. When these people go to sue Comcast, their lawyers will tell them that the people were not directly employed by Comcast and therefore are culpable separately. Then you get into the whole hassle of trying to track down the contractor, who usually disappears and reappears under a different name.

I remember getting pissed at Time Warner (pre-sellout) because one of their people trespassed on my property and left my gates open. Fortunately my dogs didn't leave, but they could have. He had right of way to cross one gate because their pole is considered part of the 'easement' to the utility company's equipment. The second gate was padlocked and he cut it off because he didn't have a proper ladder to reach the pole, I assume. I called them and they first tried to BS me that the easement covered both gates, but I told them I had the surveyors confirm it didn't when I redid the fence the year before. Then they said that they weren't the direct employer and the guy was a contractor. I asked for info and they gave me his company name only after I complained to a supervisor. His company had a web page, but none of the numbers worked and the 'business address' is basically a knife sharpening shop in central Austin. Time Warner apologized when I called back, but the most they could do was give me a couple of free months service.

MICROSOFT WINDOWS 10 Update Interrupts Weather

LiquidDrift says...

I have not - they warn that rolling back can lose data, break stuff, etc. I've heard from other people that rolling back is a huge hassle. When I need to do a wipe, I'll just reinstall Windows 8. I don't see much difference between 8 and 10 other than one broken program and it feels like it runs a bit slower. Thanks Microsoft, hope it was worth pissing off millions of people for, fuckers.

The Most Costly Joke in History

transmorpher says...

Overpriced, I'll agree with that - I'll also add overdue

1) We need F-35s because the playing field is currently too level. When it's life and death, you can never have too much of an advantage. It's not like a race, where better acceleration might get you over the finish line faster than the others. The thinking behind stealth is that you don't even need to be in the race.

Why they couldn't have just made more F-22s instead? I'm not sure. They probably expected the F-35 to be cheaper and less hassle to maintain. But that's probably not the case anymore.

And of course, as soon as China and Russia have their stealth planes ready the playing field will be more level again. And the air combat will change quite drastically.

2) I haven't heard of that before. If that's the case then it's a useless plane, since the whole point of of making a fighter stealth plane is to put it into danger with so much tech that it's capable of meeting the threat easily and returning home.

The costs are pretty silly in a time of debt for sure. My country is currently $5b in debt, and we ordered $20b worth of F-35s. Seems like it would have been a good idea to order $5b less of them But hey I'm no accountant.

The close air support style of the A-10 won't be around once they retire the A-10's. Helicopters and drones will do something similar, but in terms of planes delivering bombs it's just going to be fast movers screaming past so fast and high that man-portable missiles systems won't be able to reach.

newtboy said:

In all your over defense of this overpriced Swiss Army plane, I have yet to see you answer 1)why we would need it considering many of our planes out perform all other nations planes already (contrary to your assertion that "every Russian fighter can out maneuver the F-16", I found that's only partly true against older, non upgraded F-16s ) and 2) how you get around the 'we won't use it much because it's far too expensive to put in danger' argument.
It can't be the best for air superiority if we are too afraid to use them because they cost too much, or if we only have a few, because they cost too much.
What I read (I'm not a pilot) is that air combat is about the kill-loss ratio, where today we expect the losses to be 0.
Again, stealth is NOT 100%, and every method used has eventually been 'cracked'. If it worked every time, I would agree with you. Since it only works until the enemy figures out how, it's not worth $1.3 trillion for ANOTHER stealth fighter, we've already got them.
This plane isn't bullet or missile proof, and will be just as visible and slow when doing real close air support...if it can. I've seen footage of warthogs landing that looked like a whiffle ball they were so full of holes. They're pretty tough.
In 10 years time, I have the feeling that international air superiority will not be our biggest concern. It's good to be prepared, but terrible to bankrupt yourself to meet a challenge that's already met, or a challenge that does not yet, and may never exist. Upgrading our current aircraft would be a MUCH better way to spend that money, and we would get WAY more out of each dollar.
The F-35 may not be in service for 10 years, and may already be obsolete by then (at least it's special systems that make it 'better' than the aircraft we have today). It really seems more like a star wars project, designed to force our 'enemies' to spend themselves into oblivion, but forcing us to the brink in the effort.
Not the "close air support" that the A-10 provides. If this is meant to replace them too, and I think it is, it will have to do what they do, low and slow.

I don't disagree that advanced systems CAN make more difference than slight performance specs, that's no reason to ignore performance, or go backwards. If it's the systems that make the plane perform better, the smart thing would be to put them on the better air frame and have a better plane all around for much cheaper. Simple.

To me, if we spent $1.3 trillion developing and tens of Billions building a fleet of these planes, it's more likely we'll eventually invent a reason to have to use them. Even if we don't, while nice we aren't killing for nothing, we will have wasted that money for nothing, and done it at a time when our debt and poorly used federal funds have the country literally falling apart... that seems more than dumb, it seems criminally insane and treasonous.

Star Citizen Alpha 2.0 Gameplay Trailer

VoodooV says...

For vaporware...it's amazingly....existant

It's funny to watch Star Citizen truther trolls claim it doesn't exist when there are hundreds of thousands of people who have played it and the numerous livestreams out there on youtube.

An earlier version is on my computer that I can play right now.

But yeah, keep pretending that it's some grand conspiracy perpetrated by the mustache-twirling Chris Roberts....who would have gotten away with it too..if it weren't for that meddling Derek Smart.

I got my invite to the PTU earlier this week. Sadly, I'm not going to bother with it because 1. my video card is shitty and can barely load the game in it's current state and 2, they're constantly patching it and the patches are huge and I just don't want the hassle.

I'm curious what the next excuse will be when the game is released? @Jinx, @rancor can you enlighten me? Generally the just switch some other trivial gripe instead of admitting they were wrong.

No faith is required @OverLord. The game exists and is playable albeit still in pre-pre-pre-pre alpha. The only difference is that you never hear about regular games until they've had years of development already done. With Star Citizen, we've known about the development right from the very beginning, we've seen the game grow from the basic hangar module that was first released to what it is now...warts and all.

If it were a hoax, it's the most inefficient hoax of all time. Let's waste lots of money hiring A-list actors for the single player campaign that, were it a hoax, we could just run off with the money. And tell me..what is the supposed end game for this hoax? Is Chris and Sandi going to skip town with a suitcase full of money cackling maniacally as they twirl their mustaches? Any damsels tied to the train tracks I should know about that need rescuing?
