Keith and Rush are way too famous to engage us here, but we might be able to get a small time internet broadcaster like this Mark guy to come on. It would be great advertising for his site and maybe dag could give him a discounted ad banner for a day or two.

Haha. Yeah, and while we're at it why don't we invite Keith Olbermann and Rush Limbaugh to VS to debate with us too.

In reply to this comment by dystopianfuturetoday:
You should ask Mark to join VS and we could have the debate right here. I'd be down for that.

In reply to this comment by blankfist:
Actually, one of the other guys on that link (Mark Edge) is a cohost on a podcast/radio station I listen to when I'm working. http://freetalklive.com

You should check them out so you can call in and debate them. That would be fun to listen to.

Obama Death Threat at Townhall

The Right's Peculiar Obsession With the Constitution

NordlichReiter says...

I'd rather watch Democracy Now or The Real News Network.

The country is secular in policy but practice, hardly. There are numerous cases where religious acts are being invoked politicians and government organizations in power, and the rare occasion where the rule of law takes place.

Don't lecture me on the Establishment Clause.

What the right thinks is an immutable document is just that a document that is subject to the opinion of the reader; which therefore must be debated upon by the people. I said that in my comment above.

However equating the constitution to a fetish is horridly disturbing. It breathes an air of, "it's just a piece of paper," or it's just a vice to be used when you need it but when you don't just put it back in the cabinet; which is exactly what the right does when they need it. This whole piece was just a jab at the short ribs of those less educated to understand what was taking place.

We differ on many things. What we consider to be good reporting or news may be completely different. However I maintain my position that the guest speaker had very good points that were done a disservice by a crude and tacky quip by what I would guess was a news-reader's utterances read from a teleprompter.

On a different note. I got an email for every quote and comment you made @NetRunner. The thought in my head was, "Ah shit, he saw fit to debate me three separate occasions on the same video!" That was until I came here and saw it was from the quotes you took and @ comment.

John Hodgman at Radio & TV Correspondents' Dinner

Now I know that the press is full of self-important uptight douchebags. The shots of their deadened faces are exactly the same as the ones in the audience when Colbert was the guest speaker a few years ago.

Cheney v. Robinson on Bush Interrogation Policies

Farhad2000 says...

Liz Cheney arguing for torture techniques? What next Mullah Muhammad Omar arguing for the legality of Suicide bombers? Doesn't MSNBC know anything about maintaining integrity of guest speakers. The woman is probably schooled by Dick Cheney all day long.

Liz Cheney using the 24 ticking bomb scenario. What a lack of intellectual thinking. Again the ticking bomb scenario never occurred (like EVER), the cell structure of terrorist organizations means no one agent possess information on operations of others.

I find it ironic that Christian conservatives would support a policy that is completely at odds with their faith and scripture.

America's "Christian" Heritage

HadouKen24 says...

Yeah, I think I saw the whole video in my high school government class.

* did not go to public schools *

I've met some of the guys who do this kind of thing. A guest speaker at my high school graduation, for instance, wrote a book that cherry-picked quotes that make the Founders sound like staunch Evangelicals.

Not only are their facts wrong, but most of these guys are huge prima donnas.

>> ^Peroxide:
Funny thing about the Christian bible is, it doesn't ask me to go out and lay waste to the 'infidels' or beat my wife, or anything of the sort.

But it doesn't say those things, thats a common misconception, the Qu'ran was written as book of religion, of law and of warfare, because the Prophet was not only someone of faith but also a warrior and a statesman. Further more there is plenty in the Christian bible that is also cruel and archaic anyway as well so. It does contain passages on conduct of warfare, that does not allow killing of innocents, women and children that seeks to accept negotiation over war.

Of course extremists bypass this conveniently by saying infidels are "against" Islam, or rather are seeking to eliminate the faith and thus its okay to kill those who are not Muslim. But a closer examination shows that more Muslim people are killed by terrorist actions then anything else, major scholars of modern Islam have spoken against that and against Osama himself. The events of 9/11 brought more hardship and misery upon Muslim people then any western populace.

With regards to womens rights, you are diluting the issue again by thinking that Saudi Arabia which forces women to wear head covering is the example of what Islam is. That is nonsense, Saudi Arabia practices Wahhabi Islam, a extreme reading of Islam with various add on rules, people there in itself question that here is a video of a Saudi writer questioning this. The faith there has more to do with keeping political power then anything else. Frontline's documentary the House of Saud explains this issue very well.

The Wilder's assumption that Islam would destroy Europe is vapidly stupid, Europe was ruled by Islam already, another aspect covered in the Islamic History of Europe. Here is a quick clip that shows how the interchange of information from the Greeks to Muslims to Europeans lead to Renaissance. Also When the Moors Ruled Europe.

There is much more that is seen all over http://islam.videosift.com, the religion is not perfect but you need to look at it with a wider appreciation to History and actually understand it before claiming simplistic uninformed views from a few extremist talking heads. Start with What is Islam.

A good post dealing directly with Extremism is Doha Debates video. Where At the second Doha Debates Special on February 28th, 2006 guest speakers, including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Professor John Esposito and Diana Buttu, answered questions from the student audience on the issue of how to combat extremism and improve relations between the West and the Muslim world.

Very Interesting Article on Viruses and Human Evolution (Science Talk Post)

Doc_M says...

Excellent article. We actually just had a guest speaker in our department talking about his work on this subject... I think it may have actually been Weiss. lol. Don't remember.

Very cool fact:
Since HIV mutates so rapidly, a single person will develop a range of HIV viruses with different sequences in their body, especially after having the virus for a very long time. Certain "versions" of the virus will live better in certain tissues, so the human body becomes a microcosm of evolution for the virus. This means that if you had HIV and you spread it to two other people, one by blood, and one by sex, you would likely be spreading two slightly differently sequenced viruses.
