berticusIf you're getting sound and no video, then yeah, it's likely a codec issue.
At some point I got frustrated trying to find all the individual codecs I needed and ended up using software that installs a whole bunch, but it was a while ago now and I'm not sure if there are better options available.
I use media player classic to play media, because Windows Media Player is EVIL. A common missing codec is divx. You can use the program GSpot to help determine what codecs a video file uses.
Those are my three main software recommendations
