The problem is that when you want to get "published" you basically have to sign over the rights to reproduce the article, which is total bullcrap. I want to go GPL with any research I do too-

sl666, you mean the GPL. I'd say the GPL is probably a bit restrictive for this. In a case like this, you want that code to be completely unfettered and available for any citizen with the interest and/or desire to view it. I want to say it should be plain old Public Domain, though I haven't given it significant thought.
