Kid almost drowning in a public pool, nobody notices
Kid recovered well

And the title says "almost drowning" but the boy was underwater and lifeless for a few minutes, so I really, deeply hope the title is accurate.

ChaosEngine, I recommend checking out the fanedit called "Prometheus: Giftbearer". It incorporates deleted and alternate scenes into the film. It brings much better clarity to the story. The original version was ambiguous to a fault.

jon ronson-hilarious and disturbing story on public shaming
@ChaosEngine
i have many:teachers, police, firefighters as facebook friends.
during the run up to the election i was posting a ton of my research, analysis and commentary in regards to the election.
this,on it's own, should not be surprising, what WAS surprising is all the support i received from these people and who were simply afraid to like,or comment.
they were literally sharing my work with other people via private messaging.
each and every one expressed to me a fairly robust paranoia that if they liked any of my posts,or commented, that they would receive disciplinary action and that their jobs would be in jeopardy.
i found this very troubling and what i could not,and STILL cannot reconcile,is how some people not only ignore this very subtle form of censorship, but find it a viable and understandable in the realms of social media.
when you restrict what a person can comment or speak on due to fear.this is censorship.
in the case of justine sacco, she was simply making a joke and when put in context..a really damn good one.but due to the self-righteous moralizing of total strangers, her life was destroyed.
now there will be some that may still find this justified, and that is fine, that is their right but what REALLY chills me is that nobody is addressing the much deeper and far more insidious nature of public shaming.basically:other people saw what happened to justine sacco and will modify their social media persona accordingly.
this,in my opinion, will only result in a vanilla goo like substance that offers no challenging ideas,no conflicting opinions that offer an opportunity to discuss and debate difficult subjects, because debate starts with disagreement, and if you impose a fear of retribution by simply posting any content that may be construed as controversial.then the conversation ends...
and we all pay a price for that kind of groupthink.
this will force the really bad and worst of us to go underground, and reside in an echo chamber where their fucked up ideas are parroted back to them, resulting in a confirmation that their worldviews are correct.
conversely...
those who may have good ideas,or wish to engage in controversial subjects,or in the case of justine sacco..make a fucking joke...will be relegated to the "good little worker bee" position.who never challenges power or authority and simply obeys...for fear of losing:financial security, public standing etc etc.
they become fucking stepford wives.
and in my sincere opinion, this is the real danger.
david foster wallace-the problem with irony
It seems odd to suggest people take life lessons from a person that intentionally ended their life.
I totally disagree. Irony is a useful tool to force people to self examine their own thoughts and beliefs, find flaws, and hopefully work to improve. It seems the voiceover guy is conflating irony and cynicism.
Even cynicism has it's usefulness. We need cynics to critically examine our prejudices, debunk them when appropriate, and set us straight. If we didn't have people who were cynical, we would all just accept whatever we're told without anyone ever checking to see if it's true (a HUGE problem with people today).
He also compares being sincere with being cynical. They are not opposites by any means. One can be sincerely cynical.
I find the ending confusing. Again, he takes a life lesson from DFW about how to be "human", "be unavoidably sentimental and naïve and goo prone and generally pathetic"....since that mindset led to him commit suicide, it seems to be terrible advice to end on.
Chernobyl NSC Arch Being Moved Into Place
To add to what @skinnydaddy1 has said, if you look at a satellite image you can see that only the part of the building covered by the new arch, housing reactor number 4, was destroyed in the 1986 explosion. There isn't any need to cover the intact reactor number 3 which was actually still used for another 14 years after the loss of reactor number 4:
https://goo.gl/maps/GxvACfnvtpM2
So I take it the other half of the building doesn't pose a danger? Or are they deconstructing that later and then sealing things off? Or building another arch to confine the other half?

Thanks
You're certainly not alone there
My old avatar might have made it more obvious - http://goo.gl/1EqwgC - this one is a mash-up of @Lann's umbrella, @eric3579's burning man, and the lizard
The other thing that my username has reminded people of is otter pops.
Congratulations to a fellow Aussie.
For an embarrassingly long time I read your name as Otteropo which made me confused as to why you had a Comodo Dragon in your avatar.
Blue Man Group - The Forge
I watched in Luxor also back pretty close to the same year -- I think a bit earlier, maybe 1998 or so? They had a great bit where they grabbed an audience volunteer and all put on "bib" like things with a spigot sticking out of them, then ate twinkies. As they ate, yellow/orange goo extruded out of the spigots -- really freaked out the audience volunteer!
Then I saw them again in I think 2014. Again in Vegas, but they had changed venues to the Monte Carlo. From a quick web search it looks like they are maybe back at the Luxor now, though.
Musically, it is extremely impressive to me how they can produce really great stuff that is all centered around their custom-built PVC and other percussion instruments. You'd think that a very percussion-heavy music act with blue body paint and "act weird" shtick might get stale, but I really loved both live shows I went to as well as their albums and DVDs like the MegaStar show.
Weird but great!
When and where did you see it? I saw it on 1/13/2001 @ 7 PM PST in Luxor, Sin City, and its MegaStar Tour in Honda/Anaheim Center (years later).
