Not outdated as such. Sure, it doesn't have as readily available content as reddit or imgur, so the "quick fixers" won't come here as much as they would before.

The community seems to have shrunk as well - I suppose we're growing up and busy, so there's less of a vibrant discussion going on. Democrats are in office, atheism is better, cats are cute. There's less to talk about now, unless you get into depressing stuff like Syria. There's no friendly competition anymore and the gamefication seems to have gone away.

To me it feels like videosift is like highschool - I've graduated, so there's very little reason to come back to the little pond, since most of my friends have moved on as well.

Videosift also seems to be developing in a direction that doesn't cater to me anymore - the new design doesn't appeal to me at all. If the whole thing changes to the new layout for single pages, I'm probably out for good.

This was certainly true in the past, but how many true flops can you think of since Waterworld? Even it ended up breaking even after video sales. In the 70s and 80s there were any number of gloriously awful 'B' films, or 'A' films that took risks and then flopped, but these have just gone away... they just aren't made any more. As film budgets have climbed, the business has become more risk-averse and predictable and, many people would claim, more boring.

Whilst some are clearly more serious than others, all of the above represent things/traits which deeply concern me. Many of the people on that list I'd label as outright insane and/or seriously dangerous to my health and well being.

Some, were I to be confronted by them unexpectedly, would outright terrify me, much more so than that lady. There's a good chance that by simply responding with concern and a lack of antagonism she could have been talked down, but certainly pulling an incredulous expression and calling her a crazy lady is not likely to diffuse the situation one iota.

As I said before maybe she is a genuine danger to herself and others, such people do exist and there are systems in place to try and deal with it.

The issue here is that your not even remotely in a position to make that diagnosis, nor are any of us here. We don't know how serious her condition is or how likely she is to respond to various forms of treatment. Speculating based only on video's made during episodes (i.e. at her worst) with no context of her medical history just fuels the kind of knee jerk "lock them away" mindset that contributes heavily to these poor bastards getting the way they are in the 1st place.

For all you know a bit of in the community C.B.T. and mentoring might be all she needs/needed. Not everyone displaying psychotic symptoms benefits from or warrants full on institutional incarceration, it often makes things much worse.
She clearly needs/needed further investigation and perhaps having the benefit of her medical history and first hand interaction it might be reasonable to conclude that some form of isolation is needed. But I'd rather leave that down to those who are professionally qualified to make that judgement than bystanders who merely witnessed a few isolated psychotic episodes and know sweet F.A. about her as a person.

You want to put her in a neat little box marked "crazy" so you don't have to face the implication that in some fundamental sense you are the same thing. It's only about 50 years ago that it was standard practice to basically label everything as just various forms of "madness" and lock them all away in the same building. While we've come along way there's still very much a ways to go and the public perception of acute psychotic illnesses is by far the most backwards.

If you'd said maybe she might need institutional treatment, or that you had concerns that the behaviour she displays could escalate to a violent incident (both legitimate concerns) then I wouldn't have reacted with such hostility.
But you didn't do that, you outright declared she that must be forcibly segregated and treated and moreover that she is definitely a danger to herself and others. No grey area, isolation is the only alternative!

I don't want this to descend into a personal attack, you might after all be a really nice person and this is a deeply rooted prejudice common to most people I come across. Much like many peoples homophobia isn't especially malicious it's just an unchallenged social convention (one fortunately that is changing).

That postie clearly recognised she wasn't occupying the same reality as himself very quickly, but his response is to pull a face that says "what the fuck is your problem?" and just dismisses her as crazy. She might have calmed down and gone away peacefully in the space of a few mins if he'd tried to diffuse it, but he didn't, he escalated immediately. (because he's mentally ill too, just in a different way)
That's basically like someone getting in your way, you realizing its because they are in a wheel chair and then treating them like an arsehole because they had the indecency to be out in public and get in the way of the able bodied people! Those bloody cripples, they should be taken away for their own protection! (the fact the rest of us don't have to worry about dealing with them any more is just a bonus naturally )

Now obviously this is a somewhat flawed analogy as people with mobility impairments don't have heightened rates/likelihood of violent outbursts (though I'm sure there are plenty twats who just happen to be in wheelchairs). But the fundamental point I'm trying to make about how people treat the extravertly mentally ill stands. If your being directly threatened with no provocation is one thing, but this guy isn't he's just antagonising someone in a clear state of paranoia and delusion/misunderstanding (which he recognises within seconds). He doesn't even attempt to address that he just closes off and becomes passively hostile.
As I said before its understandable, but only in the same way as being frightened of homosexuality, alien cultures, physical disfigurement etc.. It's just cultural isolation, get to know a few people from any of those groups and it quickly starts to sublime into respect and understanding.

She became aggressive/shouty only after he became dismissive, before that she was only restless and paranoid. And even then she didn't make any aggressive physical moves we can see. Postie doesn't look at all in fear for his safety to me, he turns his back on her several times and barely maintains eye contact, not the behaviour of someone that feels physically threatened!

How might she have reacted if postie had looked genuinely scared? Maybe she'd have backed off? Changed her attitude? And yeh maybe she'd have got even more threatening or attacked him with a stick too.

We don't know what she'd have done because we don't know her or anything about her other than a few paranoid videos on the internet. Leave the judgements to the people that have done the research, interviews etc. and know know what the fuck they are talking about with regards to this lady's condition and best treatment.

The ability to reclaim votes seems to have gone away. I was actually about to post to sifttalk about it yesterday, but didn't get around to it. And since it specifically came up here, I thought I'd mention it.

Great work again, @dag. Though I admit I was hoping to read more about "K" and Battelle. Did that introduction ever happen? Did Battelle have any good insights for you? Did you get anything other than a bad taste in your mouth from that meeting?

So did anyone complain about having 10 vids promoted on the front page? It certainly never bothered me.

Is this a fix for a problem that only dag and lucky had?

I'd like to hear if others were bothered by 10 or so promotes. Anybody?

As for how effective promotes are.... there was a vid in "featured" mode for ELEVEN HOURS and still hadn't gotten 10 votes.

As for wanting us to police it ourselves -- we have to click into the vid to see how long it had been there. We have to decide if 2 hours or 3 hours or 4 hours is enough. If we promote a vid, we have to worry if it will fall off in 5 minutes if someone else isn't being attentive or if it is a high traffic time and 5 people promote in quick succession.

I just don't see that the promote as it is currently designed is effective or workable or anything other than anxiety producing (for us badge whores and cheapskates who want our power points to have a return on our "investment".)

I love you guys, dag and lucky. I love the look of the site now (except PLEASE use black for text and get rid of/tone down the crosshatch background to the right -- there just isn't enough contrast. The sizing up helped, thanks for that.) I suspect that some of the design elements are necessitated by having to service mobile devices and regular computers, but I don't know enough to know if that is true or not.

Overall, the design is clean and pretty. There are pangs as certain things have gone away and some fumblings as we learn new things.

But I haven't seen a single positive comment about the way promotes are now working. As near as I can tell, there was a single goal -- keep the number down -- which is fine. I think the Sifters would be better served if:
1. the time limit was brought back
2. the promote area was treated like a pqueue, and if three were already there, no more could be added.
3. the old Promote presentation be brought back, so they looked like regular vids instead of like ads. (I did find myself squinting at them, with the eye slide that someone else commented on.)

So I asked a question way up in this post -- did anyone have a problem with 10 promoted vids on the front page? Any sifter?

I've said it at least once before- Welcome back weirdo. We're better off with ya' than without. Well, not that you've ever really gone away... just sayin'.

Oooh, cool. Let me just read through and answer what I can.

1) We had a cataclysmic overload on our server when the game launched, so it went down over the weekend of launch. If you still have issues, try closing the app completely and restarting. The daily challenge is like in bubble bobble - you gather the letters in the game, and when you have the full word you win a mystery box.

2) Yes, if the daily challenge is bugging out, you're gonna have a bad time with that mission. The easy fix is that you can pay for a mission skip in the shop, or wait for an update. -_- It should reset and work again after a full restart though.

3) The mystery box is bugged in that you can make it confused if you click with more than one finger. This makes it lose its reference to the labels etc. Essentially, yes, it's a bug and what's far worse, it's MY bug. *cry* It will be fixed in an upcoming patch. I've already done it, it's just waiting for some other features. A hard restart will absolutely fix this.

4) Headstarts: When a game starts, an icon should swoop in from the left with the headstart icons. Clicking them will trigger a big jetpack boost that sends you quite a bit forward in the level. It's great for getting big scores. If that button doesn't show up, it seems something is amiss. Again, do the full restart and try again.

5) Skip missions: There are some missions which can take a lot of time, so we made these so people have a chance to skip the ones they didn't like (or couldn't do for some reason). When you have completed a mission, the skip is removed from the store - if the mission is still completable, it remains in the store. When you complete 3 missions, you get 3 new ones and the skips come back. The plural thing annoys the fuck out of me too, but this time it isn't my mistake. That is fixed in the upcoming patch.

6) Super sneakers are hard to use. The trick is to realize that you can swipe downward while flying/jumping, which gives you quite a lot of control. The really good players in the office love them, I'm like meh. I also avoid them when I can, because I suck at controlling them, heh.

7) 2x multi: There should be a timer in the bottom on all the powerups you pick up, if there's not, then something is bugging out hard. Same advice as before. Hard restart.

You get the tokens in the mystery boxes. When you pass the thresholds, 3, 50 200 and 500, you unlock the characters. You can change characters is Shop -> Characters (switch them on the arrows, and click select). I think the bigger thresholds are very high too, but that's what the other game designers felt was right. When you get more than the threshold, they are redundant at this point. I honestly can't say if they will be used for something, but it's something we have discussed earlier.


Phew, that was a big bit. I hope you're enjoying the game, we'll have some more stuff coming out for it soon enough - if nothing else, it will fix a bunch of bugs.

When playing the game, I can't tell if this is working, I may be missing it, but I don't see anything that tells me when this is engaged or has run out.

I've played quite a bt. 3/3 seems doable but the kid with the radio (3/50) the rocker guy (3/200) and alien costumed girl (1/500) would seem IMPOSSIBLE to attain. If it has taken me 5-6 hours to get 1/500, I know I will never get 500/500 before I loose interest in this game.
Also, in the mystery boxes I've had about 4-5 guitars (and likewise for items from different characters - eg. hats). Are these supposed to be counting or are they redundant and I'm supposed to be getting different items for these characters?

I never use full screen because I've only got the one monitor and don't want to stop doing other things to watch a video, so maybe I just haven't been paying attention, but I just looked at a few vids and they all had the button for me. Could this be some weird regional thing?

I've had serious buffering issues for a few weeks now, to the point where I've had to pause even <1min videos and let them load for a while before I could watch them. Lucky for me, this problem has gone away this week. Odd to see it's just starting for you.

Again, I don't use full screen so I don't really see the resolution switching thing, but why not just take it off auto? Click the gear and click the resolution you want and it should stay there.
