Greek Police Run Down Protesters, Catch Molotov Bomb in Face

Neil Peart drum solo on Letterman last night

critical_d says...

If you have not seen the movie, Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage, then I highly recommend it. It does well to capture the chemistry of the band, the absolute loyalty of the fans, and it has great interviews with Neil of course.
Also, I recently finished the book, Ghost Rider. For a guy who is painfully shy, he details the heartbreak and eventual triumph of that period in his life.

i wonder why he was filming?

Seriously. I just don't understand how this was captured. There was 0 reason for him to be filming.

He possibly, ironically, witnessed something fall off the flat bed.

Either that, or he was doing one of those fake-ghost-rider videos and was going to have like, 300 people on the back.

kevin smith talks about superman returns and star trek

blankfist says...

A couple of nerd notes from me, please!

1. Superman and Lois copulated at the end of Superman II, but maybe that was only in the Richard Donner cut.

2. If memory serves didn't Superman return (in Superman Returns) in a crystal vessel? Is so he probably left in it, so the lack of the yellow sun wouldn't harm him in outer space.

3. When I was in film school the directing majors in my class had a phone in conversation with Robert Wise. Wise directed the first Star Trek (Star Trek the Motion Picture). Yes, it's slow. But, according to him, his point was that at that time in 1979 there wasn't a lot of big budget films that showed ships in space, so the long shots of the Enterprise were awe-inducing for the time.

4. Upon first viewing of Superman Returns, yes, I thought it was boring. I'm more of a Marvel fan anyways, but years later I picked it up on Blu-Ray and watched it again knowing ahead of time that the plot was slow. I don't believe there are huge plot holes. Also the story gets better once you drop your expectations for a "kick ass" comic book action-fest. The storytelling is well paced and interesting. It's not Dark Knight, but it's still good filmmaking. It's not brainless crap like Ghost Rider or the regrettable Daredevil.

5. WHAT THE FUCK IS KEVIN SMITH WEARING?! Long shorts down to his ankles and a fucking trenchcoat? He's wearing Juggalo attire. He looks ridiculous.

6. Red Dead Redemption is awesome. I don't care if that has nothing to do with this.

My two cents.

I dunno, I like Nic Cage, sometimes. Leaving Las Vegas, Adaptation, 8mm and Lord of War were all good. Just don't go see his crap stuff.

I mean seriously, National Treasure, Ghost Rider? The fact that these movies were bad came as a surprise to someone? IT'S RIGHT THERE IN THE TITLE! Come on people.

Ha ha, in general I have to agree, he should have stopped after Raising Arizona. Although I am shamed to have to admit that I did quite enjoy Ghost Rider. I still haven't watched Wicker Man though, not that alleged atrocity of Cage's. Watch the original, you won't regret it.

Eagle Eye: dumbshit pie (spoilers ahead) (Blog Entry by dag)

lucky760 says...

I'm with Sarzy. I feel fortunate that in the last few years I have been able to convince my brain more and more to avoid the nagging/disbelief I used to suffer through in every such movie for retards.

(E.g., In Ghost Rider why the FUCK do they keep saying he's breaking a world record by jumping 300 yards "from goal post to goal post" when he was also jumping through the end zones???!!! Did those extra yards not count toward the world record???)

I went into Eagle Eye fully expecting endless stupidity and a ridiculous story with Michael Bay explosions to wow the kiddies. While most of it was pretty out there, I was able to enjoy the movie for what it was, a couple hours of simple entertainment, while ignoring what it was not, an intelligently complex tale of ingenious technology and intricately developed characters with a subplot about the duality of man's craving for and fear of technology.

I wouldn't recommend Eagle Eye to anyone with a well developed sense of reality or scrutiny, but I wouldn't call it the worst movie I've ever seen. Hollywood could definitely stand to improve its sewage, but it's hard to expect much better when all the people with the money are only interested in what will "earn" them more of it.

I thought Ghost Rider was half decent, albeit moronic. It could have been a lot worse, and the visuals were pretty strong. I was glad Nicolas Cage finally got to play a Marvel hero. Cage has one of the most expensive comic collections in the world, and actually had to have a Ghost Rider tattoo covered up in order to play Ghost Rider!

"He [the reader] who will go thus far, if he find on finishing this treatise that large bodies of facts, otherwise inexplicable, can be explained by the theory of descent, ought not to hesitate to go further, and to admit that a structure even as perfect as the eye of an eagle might be formed by natural selection, although in this case he does not know any of the transitional grades [as supported by the fossil record]."

Runon hellloooooo... Dave, you need a new editor. This is merely another example of one of a slew of poorly crafted and convoluted sentences that permeate your text. After writing several published papers and now a book chapter myself, I realise the trick is to keep it simple. A text isn't done when there is nothing left to add; it is finished when there is nothing left to take out. Sentences should be simple, and each should convey one or two points. More importantly in scientific papers, journals, and books, it is quintessential that you establish logos by referencing existing peer reviewed literature.

You might be upset, but hopefully you see my points. I am trying to explain to you that in science there are rules. If you want to set creationism up as an alternative theory, or understand science through a biblical lens, then you are absolutely doing a disservice to your cause by not using rhetorical appeals. It is also a disservice to write poorly, which you do. Really, how can you expect people to learn your thoughts with such magnificently horrible writing?

New Iron Man Trailer

>> ^Ryjkyj:
Could it be possible that Hollywood didn't screw up a comic book movie?

And here I've been wondering "Can they actually turn Iron Man into an entertaining story and character?"

They've been doing fairly well with comic movies in the last few years. Spider-man and X-Men both had great 1st and 2nd movies followed by 3rds that paled in comparison, but weren't bad. The Punisher was well done. 300 was well done. Batman Begins was excellent. V for Vendetta was excellent. Sin City was pretty good.

On the flip side you've got Hulk, Superman Returns, Elektra, Ghost Rider and the Fantastic Four movies. But then the Hulk, Superman, Elektra, Ghost Rider and the Fantastic Four are some of the lamest comic properties around, so it should be expected that the movies would suck.

Then there's Daredevil. Daredevil could have been good but was poorly done and poorly cast. Whether you like Ben or not, he's not DD.
