Role Playing Night (Family Guy)

Starbucks Giving Free Coffee To Voters Tomorrow

mintbbb says...

Let me vent a tiny bit, not about politics, but about people in general.. I work in a Starbucks, but one in a Target store. I am trained by Starbucks, I serve Starbucks, and I have a Starbucks district manager who comes to check on my store at least once a month. But I am employed by Target, and Target is the store that sets the rules for *my* Starbucks.

Target Starbucks are usually not part of any of the Starbucks special offers. Target Starbucks was not part of this 'vote and we will give you a free coffee' thing. But people came by and asked if they get a free coffee from us. They argues with us. My team lead said we'd rather give them a free coffee and have people happy with us, than having them curse at us and go elsewhere to get their free coffee.

Yes, most people were nice this morning. They said 'Thank you so much!' and 'You are so nice!' when we gave them their coffee. But what gets me are the people who are NEVER happy! We say 'A free tall coffee', and they say 'Oh, I want the new gingerbread twist for free!' . They say 'Oh, I don't drink coffee, can I just get a hot chocolate instead?'

And we have to say 'sorry, no'. It isn't that we want to be mean to people! It isn't that we are not giving away free stuff, especially when we are not even part of the program. But coffee isn't that expensive, and we want to make people happy! But we can't be making free whatever drinks to everybody! Why are there so many people who still aren't happy? So many people who just want to argue with you and get a free special latte instead of a coffee?

Maybe you think I am being ridiculous, and overly sensitive. But I get so many people who think that *I* personally make the coffee cost so much that they think it is OK to scream at me when I just want to charge what my cash register is set to charge!

If you don't want to pay $1.65 for your regular cup of coffee, please feel free to go elsewhere. I am not setting the price myself. If you don't want to have a free cup of coffee today, always served with a smile, but want something fancier instead, please go somewhere else.

I am being as nice as I can, and I understand that you might have a bad day, but don't take it out on me! I am doing a great job! And then I go home at night and cry because people are mean.

Just go vote! It shouldn't be about a free coffee, and please be nice to your barista!

Obama and "Joe the Plumber"

And you know... not all of us are on the same timezone, so don't think that we're all staying up late because we don't have jobs... I have a full time job that supports me, my wife going through uni and my three kids thanks very much...

Speak for yourself pal, I do all my sifting from a cardboard box in an alley next to a Starbucks where I use a stolen laptop and that delectable free Wi-fi to come online and promote Obama so I can get free stuff at the expense of hard-working fools like Joe the plumber.

Mr. OriginalUsername, it sounds like you have a lot in common with Obama, raised by a single parent, and believe in the value of work.

Regardless of what you believe about Democrats, we're not socialists. We don't think we need to have government seize the means of production, and make all salaries equal. We believe in encouraging the growth of business and prosperity by using tax money to build an infrastructure that business is conducted on.

Republicans demagogue about choking business with taxes, and maybe that was true 40 years ago, but it's not true today. Democrats aren't philosophically wed to growing government, and we won't shy away from killing programs that don't work, even if we're not shy about trying new ones.

Our goals are to get as many people working as possible, through improving education, healthcare, and our infrastructure (e.g. roads, networks, and energy).

I never assume Republicans are rich -- there aren't enough of those out there to ever win elections. Most of their supporters seem to misunderstand what the Democratic party is about these days.

Thank you wikipedia.
In short: once a year she does a show where she talks about products she likes, and gives a bunch of stuff to the audience. So they're freaking out because they think they're in the audience for the show where they get free stuff. But they're not. Morons.

Thank you, Moonsammy, for the explanation. Now it makes total sense. Actually I'd be capable of doing weirder things for a free car ;-). Did Oprah ever make a men's edition (e.g. giving away Macs or non-hybrid cars)?

ART OF SEDUCTION: Not Pretty, Really

smibbo says...

maybe i'm nuts, or maybe i don't have the right to say this but the POINT is not that those pretty don't have a "right" to the claim "being pretty ain't all its cracked up to be" but that the main negative - falsity and objectivication are negatives that EVERYONE experiences. Believe it or not beautiful people we uglies have to deal with that too!! ZOMG!! However, we DON'T get to have all the little perks that being beautiful gives you.

So let's summarize:
being beautiful - can include being objectified and having false friends
being ugly - can include being objectified and having false friends
Being beautiful - can include getting free stuff, getting picked first for opportunities, being first in line for social events
being ugly - none of the above

so
being beautiful - maybe the downsides and definitly some perks
being ugly - same downsides, noneof the perks

now WHAT are we feeling sorry for?

Mourning for The Dead (Sift Talk Post)

MINK says...

well, the copyright system was not invented for the internet, it is ridiculously out of date and we are living in a twilight zone between printed books and the future.

watermarking may be the future, if they can sort out the law and tech. of course then they have to release new versions with watermarks and old links will die anyway. i really hope that ads are not the future.

the point is, we didn't pay to make the Daily Show, and we can't really moan if they decide to pull clips or make them expire. The only legitimate response is to make your own videos, but there's no self linking here (maybe for good reasons) and the production cost is still a bit too high for TDS kind of things to work when amateurs do them.

the whole "give it away for publicity and people will pay tomorrow" thing is totally not working IMO. It just means people expect stuff for free.

the internet makes free stuff viable, but that doesn't mean that all stuff should be free, or that free stuff is good. hence you have to search for the good stuff, which you can't possibly do alone, hence videosift is great.

Why should there be a live link to loads of TDS clips on here? We do not own them, most of us wouldn't pay for them, end of story.
