Hillary Clinton appears to faint stumble during 911 Memorial

Fairbs says...

Also to be fair, I think it's legitimate to have trump provide a more thorough exam than his doctor writing something up off the cuff about how he's in the best shape of any president ever. freakin ridiculous, the guy's older than Hillary and very obese.

To be fair:

There were lots of questions about John McCain's health when he ran for president. Especially after he named Palin to be his VP. Now, here we are 8 years later and he is fine and still serving in the Senate.

I'm not complaining about that -- I think that it was a legitimate concern to bring up. Particularly because Palin would have taken over if anything had happened.

It is just as legitimate of a concern in Hillary's case. ...And this is a rather terrible thing to say, but personally, I'd say that her ticket gets *more* attractive the more likely it seems that she might keel over at any second. I could probably justify voting for Tim Kaine over Trump, but with the race being Hillary vs Trump I'll vote 3rd party. Sorta the exact opposite of the Palin scenario...

Trigger Warnings Let Students Skip Lectures

Drachen_Jager says...

Nobody takes attendance at University 'round these parts. If students want to skip, that's their problem, so long as they do the work and pass the exams (which is much harder if you don't go to lectures).

this is what being caught in a lie looks like

Rich congressional dudes just can't stay away from women's health issues. Chaffetz should give himself a prostate exam, preferably with his own wiener.

Just Another Black Man Almost KIlled By Cops

Mordhaus says...

Both of the male officers were canned at later points due to related issues, one lied on a police report about a different beating and the other beat another person up and got caught on video.

However, apparently Denver has unlimited appeals for PO's, which means after a couple of years both of these officers were reinstated. Additionally the DA in the area has a long history of looking the other way when it comes to prosecuting cops.

I don't condone shooting or beating officers, lowering ourselves to that standard makes us no better. I do think it is beyond time to take severe steps to curtail these types of officers, through judicious use of repeated psych exams and zero tolerance policies. If you do something and get caught, you should do time and/or NEVER allowed to be an officer again. You should also lose your right to bear arms like a felon does, because you broke your trust with the public you were supposed to serve.

Guns with History

StukaFox says...

I don't want to ban guns, but I would like to see the following:

1. License gun owners like Germany licenses drivers. Six months of classes, followed by multiple exams.

2. Mandatory psychological examination for any person wanting to purchase a gun.

3. Require that a minimum of $1,000,000 death or dismemberment insurance be carried at all times.

4. Automatic 25-year sentence for ANY crime involving a gun.

Limit guns to:

- Shotguns: Single-barrel breach-load.

- Pistols: 6-shot rotating cylinder; hammer-cocked firing mechanism. No semi-automatic pistols.

- Rifles: Single-shot, bolt-action.

Cats Home From The Vet Totally Tripping Balls

PlayhousePals says...

Poor woozie babies. Last year, after my Elwood came home from a dental procedure, he was so comfortable curled up in my lap he just peed. Jake pees in the carrier before we even see the vet ... no need for drugs. Reminds me, gotta stock up on pee pads before their yearly exams this coming Monday. Sigh

Sen. Ted Cruz at Liberty University announces his candidacy

newtboy jokingly says...

Coming from you, that's a compliment...the day you think I'm right about something is the day I go for a mental exam! (I note you can't contradict a single comment/point, but can only make an ad-hom attack, but I/we expect nothing less from you)
I'll be sure to donate exactly twice as much as you donated to Obama, I'll go one better and double your donations to all non-GOP candidates combined from the last election, which with your open mind must be a mint, eh? Just provide receipts and I'll be sure to get right on that. (LOL!!!-"..you dumber than a bag of hammers"...so you can't write proper English to write an insult and you suggest people you call 'liberals' might donate to a candidate even hard core far right wingers say is a too far right wing nutbag...but I'm dumb! ROTFLMFAHS! Thanks!)

Knowing that you dumber than a bag of hammers I take your comments in proper light.

However, you could be a good sport and go to http://www.tedcruz.org/

and give a donation - since being a liberal your so opened minded.

If I Die on Mars

EMPIRE says...

Yeah, the british guy seemed really intelligent, but really awkward (both socially and physically). I doubt he would be a good choice.

Obviously, I expect them to run extensive psychological exams on the last few candidates, I mean... these people will need to be intelligent, resourceful, with nerves (and balls) of steel, and also in good shape obviously.

Calgary's Worst Driver

Drachen_Jager says...

Sadly (not trying to be racist here) there's an influx of wealthy Chinese immigrants into western Canada. They arrive in their thirties and forties, never having sat behind the wheel of a car and take expensive driving courses that guarantee success by bribing the driving examiner. Because they don't know any English, they're allowed a "translator" for the written exam, who really just takes the test for them.

Judging from the BMW, this was likely one of those.

There have been several crackdowns on this activity, but it continues and many licenses were handed out before the authorities started to get serious about it.

Lewis Black - america does not understand teachers

RedSky says...

@kceaton1
@JiggaJonson

I think there's a big difference between instant fire-able offences (drinking on the job) and mediocre teaching. My mother is a teacher and she definitely talks about a dichotomy between those who try and those who don't.

Unfortunately the system they have in QLD, Australia for end of high school exams is that the teachers can set the exam themselves for their students rather than any form of independently set examination. This means there is a huge incentive, for say Math, to teach to a specific test, then give the exam with largely the same questions but the numbers changed.

There is performance tracking at a school level and principals are incentivised to create good results but often this can be achieved with rote learning rather than genuinely understanding the subject matter due to the lack of externally set examinations.

Meanwhile, while unions ensure that risk of job loss is low, principals can transfer teachers to far away schools with poor conditions easily, and since performance can be fudged, your ability to retain a specific position is largely determined by your personal relationship with said principal.

As far as students being able to address bad teachers directly, how? As you mentioned Jigga, they will likely not be taken seriously if they complain as some will assume it's as a result of work load rather than teaching performance. The only way you can really measure it is student performance objectively measured by externally set examination.

Yes, it's not a perfect measure. Student performance may be determined by the cohort or the effectiveness of teachers in lower grades. That's why you test them before and after to measure progress rather than raw performance. You can also look at average results over 3-4 years to avoid specific class bias and to allow room for improvement.

As far as standardised measures, a good test for say Math will require broad knowledge rather than specific facts as the questions that could be asked would be widespread and would test understanding rather than rote learning. For subjects with wider and less specific knowledge areas like say English or History you avoid advantaging specific knowledge by giving a wide range of options for essay questions.

Anti-Gun PSA Makes the Case for Women With Guns

Shepppard says...

No... This definitely continues the point of "We don't need weapons that are easily concealed and readily available for this exact situation to be available at your local Wal Mart."

In terms of Canadian gun laws, could this still happen? Yes. But only after he's taken not one, but two tests, and a psych exam. Other than that, if he were walking around outside with a gun, it would've been something like a hunting rifle, where she could A) have hid, or B) said "He's carrying a gun!"

Lets go back to the whole "What about if he didn't have a handgun" bit, though. Because, honestly, if he didn't have a handgun, the cops would literally have been there within 2 minutes most likely.

You also make the assumption that even if she had a gun, she wouldn't have gotten shot. That would be true if she had been brandishing it when the guy broke in, but unless it was already in her hands, he already would've had her within the first 10 seconds of being in the house.
