Clever Photograph Trick

chingalera says...

There's plenty of intentionally blurred faces in the ones I've taken part in (elementary and middle school)-Once kids figured out that when they shook their heads back and forth rapidly that they would look like paranormal ghouls everyone was twitching and wiggling the next year!

There used to be good money in these student body long-exposure pans. Analog kicks ASS!

Chinese Farmer Creates Wind-Powered Car

Barbar says...

I'm not sure why people seem to think this is an elementary problem. I seriously doubt that most people in this discussion studied anywhere near the math and physics required in the calculation in middle school, or even high school, or college for that matter. Having studied physics and math at all those levels, I know that wind turbines were NEVER part of the discussion. After looking up the relevant equations, I can see why -- they're certainly not trivial, and would probably required significant calculus to understand (derive). In university my physics courses were directed towards electricity, so I didn't get a chance to play with wind tunnels -- although I'd still love to!

Applying the oversimplified version of laws that you learned in early physics classes to reality can often leave you in stunned silence when reality seems to defy them. Things like the dimples on golf balls or sailing ships moving upwind are classic examples of things that you wouldn't expect to even be conceivable unless you saw it in action.

Step into an Optical Illusion

Seriously? Mystery Spot blew your mind?
A coworker told me to go to Mystery Spot. So I did. I was completely unimpressed. Not a single illusion was actually impressive.
I will forever be labeled a humbug, I suppose. Fine! Humbug it is. But I will cast judgement down from my humbug tower. You can't stop me.

When I was a kid, my elementary school had a field trip to the Mystery Spot and I remember it blowing my mind too.

Looking back on it, I really think my teacher should have told us it was just a trick.

10 Highly Unethical Medical Experiments

CrushBug says...

The only one I was not sure about was the Stanford Prison experiment. I have read a few things on it, and I am not sure who could have expected the results. From what I remember, most of the people were shocked at how brutal the subjects went after such a short time.

Now the elementary school teacher who reenacted it with Reds and Blues in her class, over a period of a few hours, that person should have known better.

Justice Has Been Served -This Bad Driver Got Busted

The stop signs may be a federal law but only recently have the penalties been increased to LUDICROUS standards.

I think the point that you are missing (for the ones saying that you shouldn't need to stop, or that the stop signs should be replaced with slow signs) is that this kind of law has been this way for about 35+ years. This is NOT a new law, at least in my area.

I'm not sure where you are from but I live in Jersey. This law, or at least the stop signs on buses, were enacted within the past decade at most.
I didn't say kids are dumber these days. I said things like this are making our kids dumber because we're making everything so safe for them nobody learns any life lessons.
Maybe things are different in yoru Area but in my Area there are no Elementary School Buses. The younget you get on a bus is when you're headed into middle school so you are 12 years old. Someone who is 12 years old should know to look both ways before crossing and not cross in front of the bus etc etc etc.

STOP signs on school buses are a Federal Law.... as in the entire USA.. NTSB #131 for the last 21 yrs

Neil deGrasse Tyson -why no metric system on Nova ScienceNow

lurgee says...

i remember those days>> ^wormwood:

They actually tried to go metric in the 70s. We started learning it in elementary school and there were TV spots trying to teach us all about it--schoolhouse rock kind of stuff. And you started seeing dual units on packaging and speedometers, etc. Coke went from 2-quart to 2-liter bottles, which were a bit larger and therefore popular. Those 2 liter bottles are still around as the only remaining effect of the effort--even NdGT has given up! Americans hate the metric system, but they will put up with it if it means a slightly larger volume of sugary liquid to suck on.

Romney to Skeptical Teachers: Classroom size doesn't Matter

kceaton1 says...

I can tell you from a teacher that taught 40+ years in elementary, my mother, would tell you right off the bat that a smaller classroom will indeed lead to a better learning experience, some of which has been covered above. But, it also makes it so my mother didn't work from 6:00 A.M. till 7-9 P.M. for a job she loved and cared about.

There are many teachers that don't put in those hours (mostly due to the state and it's ridiculous expectations--this is Utah BTW) and go home early, but they also don't have the love for their job my mother had--something required if you truly want to be a great teacher.

Corporate-Run Schools Will Provide New Sources of Revenue

If we could get a group of elementary school kids from 1926 in a classroom today they'd out-test the teacher (indoctrinator).

This is probably untrue due the the fact that the Intelligence Quotient keeps being revised upwards and not downwards. Some of those kids today would be considered legally retarded.

Applying Deweyite school principles of schools today though would be a major change that we con enact and would make our education system better.

Corporate-Run Schools Will Provide New Sources of Revenue

I have a wacky idea: Change one simple dynamic in public education and the rest takes care of itself~Teach children how to learn instead of what to learn. Public education in the United States has become an overt assault on critical thought.

If we could get a group of elementary school kids from 1926 in a classroom today they'd out-test the teacher (indoctrinator). Public education overhaul Mitt? Your simply popping spit like any politician. Get a life that doesn't involve lies spewing from your mouth with every exhalation. You too, Obama-Yer a tool like all of them are.

Absurd GOP Attack Plan Exposed -- TYT

VoodooV says...

I love the desperate narrative they're going for. Yeah he didn't show his "true colors" during his first term. but OMG!!! if he gets elected for a second term, Then he'll magically turn into SuperCommunistLiberalMuslimSocialistHusseinMechaObama muhahahahhahaha!!

The insults just read like they got it from an elementary school, not adults that supposedly graduated from college.

I just find it humorous that they can't build up their own candidate. They can't find enough good things to say about their own candidate. They gotta make up crap about Obama.

It's just so sad. All my conservative friends are so fucking confused. They don't want to vote for Obama, but there is absolutely zero enthusiasm to vote for Romney. Meanwhile everyone who is even remotely on the fence swings toward Obama because of the ridiculous GOP primary shitstorm of a circus.

Don't get me wrong, yeah I'm voting for Obama, but I'm not exactly super pleased with him. He wasted way too much time attempting to play nice with the right when there was no chance in hell the right would EVER play nice with him. The right has made it their number one objective to make Obama a single term president. Not to govern the country, but to get him out. There is absolutely nothing Obama could do to win the right over...nothing. So why bother? You're better off pandering to the people who voted you in in the first place and continue demonstrating how the extreme right is becoming increasingly out of touch with the rest of the US.

He needed to take a page from Clinton and campaign for why his ideas were better than the other guy instead trying to appease people he was never going to win over and instead, win over that silent moderate majority.

in short, he was too wishy washy. he needed to take a stand sooner on many issues. Get it through your head Obama, the right tried to argue that you weren't a citizen and that you were a muslim terrorist. What part of "these people were never going to be your friends" don't you understand?
