How powerful assault-style rifles lead to devastating wounds

newtboy says...

Ok, then rimfire isn't assault weapon ammo. You're mixing up topics, adding confusion for nothing on topic....
....and the data massively contradicts your contention that any normal handgun is more powerful or faster than assault weapons, which are 7.62x39 and .223, both over 3 times the power of .357 magnums and beat .44 magnums handily.

To be honest, .50 AE pistols do actually appear to have slightly more power than .223 caliber rifles, I had to look them up separately as they weren't listed, but they are far slower, and a .50 cal bmg has around 7.5 times more power, and desert eagles in the AE .50 configuration aren't normal pistols.

Ah no. I didn't misquote this.

Go to the 16 second mark thank you very much.

Including rimfire was to point out that just because it is a rifle doesn't mean it is more powerful than a handgun.

I know nothing about guns, but was that AK a semi-auto or a full auto?
It seemed like it popped off a lot of rounds in one trigger press.

The same guy has other videos - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjLwz6HngzI & http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHKaIA9FTRA using what I assume is the same gun (AKS-74U). In those, you can clearly see a fully-automatic mode.

According to this - http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090208100642AA1yRuX
Full-auto weapons are legal, but have a lot of restrictions when it comes to buying/selling.

In some states they are still banned - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_Assault_Weapons_Ban#Assault_weapons_bans_in_other_states

Varying Bullet Caliber Damage

Skeeve says...

This is great. People have such warped ideas of guns from Hollywood mythmaking - though a lot of video games don't help either.

I've seen guys come into the range, fire a 9mm for a bit, then brag about how much better the Desert Eagle is. Then a range officer pulls one out and they realize that it's hard for them to hold it steady, let alone fire accurately. A .50 pistol sounds impressive only until you realize that you only have 7+1 rounds, you can't aim for shit, and the recoil is a bitch. As my favorite range officer put it: "Angelina Jolie [a la Tomb Raider] would have trouble carrying one in each hand, but somehow she is firing two on the run?"

Some movies are getting better, more accurately depicting the proper usage of a gun and actually showing reloads, but even my girlfriend starts laughing at some of the more blatant mistakes in action movies (The Green Hornet has some whoppers).

The MMORPGification of games (NSFW) (Blog Entry by jwray)

Farhad2000 says...

These elements are simply too appealing for most gamers, they allow continuation of the game, a reason to keep playing and generate continual interest in the same way new map releases have previously.

I understand your argument, but having played Call of Duty 4 just to have a Golden Desert Eagle. I have to say it makes the games far more interesting to play. Not to mention there are alot of PURE games still around. Quake 3 online comes to mind.

I would disagree with it if it came with a payment structure, along the lines of say social games like Mafia Wars on FB where people can essentially buy better in game items to edge out people playing them game regularly.

Terminator 2 Teaser Trailer

mizila says...

Awesome sift, trailers these days are basically summaries of the movie. NOT GOOD. ME NO LIKEY. Every trailer I stumble into watching gives away two if not three plot points. Take one of my favorite movies of late: Pineapple Express. In the trailer you see Seth Rogan witness the murder, run away, and get revenge. In like a 30 second trailer you get the whole plot and most of the best jokes. Don't get me wrong, I laffed hard when I saw those jokes for the 10th or 15th time when I finally went to see it, but I might've laffed harder if they'd just suggested it was a movie about guns and pot. And I STILL WOULD HAVE GONE TO SEE IT. Maybe it's just me, but show a spliff, a Desert Eagle, write SETH ROGAN over the top for 30 seconds and I'm buying whatever that is selling.

btw here's my recipe for brownies.

I'm sorry, .306es and .308s are not high powered rifles, they're very middle of the road calibres. The one in the video appears to be only a .223 which, in my books is a low powered rifle.

Yup, that sure does look like a .223. However, as far as standard rifles go, a .30-'06 (That's what it's called - as in .3 inches, introduced in 'ought six, or 1906) are fairly high powered.

I had a similar situation in call of duty 4 online. But with a desert eagle and two opponents, only I was shooting so they wouldnt come around the corner, I had no ammo for my primary.

Inigo Montoya's sword from The Princess Bride.
Charles Bronson's .44 Magnum from Death Wish.
Travis Bickle's quickdraw gun Mechanism from Taxi Driver.
Dirty Harry's .357 Magnum
Bullet Tooth Tony's Desert Eagle .50 from snatch.
Freddy Kruger's glove
Jason's Machette

This isn't over yet!

Desert Eagle .50 with slow motion shockwave

TheSofaKing says...

For those who think it is fake... I've never fired one, and I am by no means an expert but... my understanding is that the supersonic velocity of the 50cal round shapes the muzzle flash. The camera's speed may not be fast enough to captures it per say, but the blooming effect on the sensor of the camerea would essentially allow it to still be picked up...like if you look at something bright and then close your eyes...you can still see it.

I also checked several other Desert Eagle videos and they all contain to some degree, a similar effect, including the following one with some really good slow motion from different angles.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BWZFaiTdKwM

and another

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1RKCLczsgc

I'm not saying it's real, but since it is so cool...I choose to believe it.

Skinny Girl Owned By Desert Eagle

Memorare says...

Fake. I've fired the .44 and .50 Desert Eagle, even if you intentionally "limp-wrist" the thing it won't fly back and hit you in the head like that. Reason: the hand and arm strength needed to just HOLD it out there for many seconds like she's doing will preclude it from doing so. The gun is freakin massive! So if she's able to hold it that long she can handle the modest recoil.

In me own experience after about a 1/2 hour of target shooting with the .44 I could barely rack the slide in the conventional manner, the double recoil springs wore out my grip to the point where i couldn't pull back the slide normally.

For personal defense against bears, a better bet is a 12-guage slug.
