Bill Nye the Science Guy Dispels Poverty Myths

VoodooV says...

While on one hand, I've always known that foreign aid is barely a drop in the bucket of our budget, but on the other, I'd still be hesitant to increase foreign aid to be completely honest.

so much shit that needs fixing and investment here domestically.

If we really could make a decent dent in military spending...then I'd be more comfortable with more foreign aid.

hate to say it but don't these people need to overthrow their own dictators and overlords? I'm ok with giving them some aid and giving them intel and other kinds of non-hardware military support. but they do need to fight their own damned battles.

TDS: Minimum wage hike and the Pope denouncing Trickle Down

Edgeman2112 says...

Let's get a bit more realistic here, shall we?

I like John. He's smart. But he missed the point on government assistance. The guy meant that the wage will be increased through legislation and not merit. I'm sure he also didn't mean that taxpayers are directly on the hook, even though indirectly they will be.

It's easy to narrow this conversation down to Burger King, McDonald's, and the like because they are large corporate entities which pay some employees minimum wage.

But guess what? Tons of other places in the United States pay their employees minimum wage too. The difference is that they are most certainly not large corporate entities and therefore can't mitigate the impact of a rising wage through the diversity of their products or the markets in which they serve. They are Joey's Pizza and Bertha's Plumbing. There is no way in hell they'll be able to pay a federal minimum wage of 15$.

You're right. 15$ an hour won't put a dent on the cost of a Big Mac, but when your septic tank gets destroyed from choking down all those burgers, you'll be sure to get some sticker shock.

Harold Crick meet Arthur Dent. Arthur Dent meet Sam Lowry. Sam Lowry meet Gordon Freeman. Gordon Freeman meet Neo.

Is that the correct order of progression? Or is it back to Arthur Dent and his sandwiches?

News Anchor Completely Loses it for the Best Possible Reason

VoodooV says...

ahh yes, solving problems by raising voice.

I agree the core problem is money in politics. but the main issue behind that is that ultimately not enough people see that as the main problem, Lets get real here, a non-insignificant number of our nation think our president is a kenyan muslim.

deal with that problem then maybe you can convince people that private money should be removed from politics. but good luck, it's been a problem since the beginning of all government everywhere. but hey, I'm sure your rant made a big dent in the problem. and I'm sure the president making a speech will really do a lot too

When i was a kid. My family became really good friends with a family that had just moved to the US from Germany. In 76 the Father bought his wife a 1976 Celica Liftback GT, Brand new. It was the last car she ever owned. He offered to buy her several cars over the years she refused. Immaculately cared for that car. I honestly had never seen one taken care of as well as this one was. A few years ago she died and I went to the funeral. Her husband had died a few years earlier. While her kids were cleaning out the old house. They found it under a car cover in the garage. Pretty much being the only car guy they knew. They called me to come look at it. It looked exactly like the day it was driven off the showroom floor. Bright red, No dents, dings, No color fade outside or inside. A little over 46k on the odometer. It started and ran like new. I honestly had never seen a car that old in that good of condition outside of car collection or show. I was honestly amazed. No clue if they ever sold it. I would not have but you never really know what some people will do.

I know a guy who is super obsessive about his truck, but he doesn't do shit like take up two lanes, he just becomes obsessive about parking away from everyone else even if he has to walk farther,

Quite honestly, I get it..but I don't. I understand the desire to protect your car from dings and other shit. But not to that degree. just by virtue of taking it out of your garage and driving and parking on public streets, the vehicle is going to get dinged up eventually.

I guess I just will never understand the desire to buy a super expensive luxury car if you're just going to be super paranoid about dings...why drive it then. Be Cameron's dad in Ferris Bueller's day off and just stare at it and wipe it with a diaper all day.

cars get dinged...deal with it you're not special.

Thing is though, that guy isn't THAT fat, so it shouldn't have been that difficult for him to climb over. and once he committed to it, it didn't take him that long. It took him so long because he was choking on his own rage and basking in his over-inflated sense of specialness.

public shaming of douchebags like this need to happen more often.

Beast of the sky: A-10 Thunderbolt II mid-air refueling

MilkmanDan says...

@kulpims - Yes, the physics of it suggest that even shooting fairly heavy depleted uranium shells at very high velocities at a fairly high rate of fire can't really put much of a dent in the momentum of a *very* heavy plane moving at a pretty high velocity.

Still, the pilot at the time told me in person (and some research I've done since then also suggests it may be true) that angling the gun off of perfectly straight alignment was deemed necessary due to shear forces that would require fairly dramatic pilot correction when firing the weapon.

Definitely nothing like dramatically slowing the airspeed of the plane, but I still found it impressive that the recoil of the gun became a design challenge even in such a large aircraft.

Bill Burr Doesn't Believe The Steve Jobs Hype - CONAN

Yogi says...

What a shitty crowd. If thats the kinda waste of air that watches Conan I don't want to even bother with it. Worshipping fucking Steve Jobs. This is why when the Apple killing Chinese workers story came out, it was swept away faster than anything. You just know that Steve before he finally died was battering poor Chinese workers with iPads for fun, "Make it Heavier! I can't dent peoples skulls with this flimsy crap!"
