Aussie as 'Random act of Kindness'

Is the Universe a Computer Simulation?

Mordhaus says...

In the field of artificial intelligence, a genetic algorithm (GA) is a search heuristic that mimics the process of natural selection. This heuristic (also sometimes called a metaheuristic) is routinely used to generate useful solutions to optimization and search problems.[1] Genetic algorithms belong to the larger class of evolutionary algorithms (EA), which generate solutions to optimization problems using techniques inspired by natural evolution, such as inheritance, mutation, selection, and crossover.

I direct your attention to the first sentence. In the field of AI, in other words, an artificially created intelligence. Now even if you go to the the idea Turing had that a computer could learn and adapt itself to the point of AI, it is a device that had to be created by an outside designer at some point. It didn't just manifest, it was created and reached AI level, then it could at that point begin to try to 'imitate' natural selection.

It has become clear to me over our last couple of discussions that you are incredibly reluctant to think outside of the box YOU have created for yourself. You believe what you believe and damn the torpedoes with the rest.

Did you read it? I bet not, because it describes systems of laws and rules that can allow programs/problem solutions to create themselves based on evolutionary models, starting from a randomly generated population of possible solutions, not the programming of an AI.
Yes, someone must 'program' those rules into a computer, but there's no need to program an AI (nor is there a need for someone to program those laws into reality, they simply are... the universe did not start out as an empty hard drive), this programs and re-programs itself based on the rules to find the optimal solution to the problem given. That's solution evolution, not AI.
The methodology comes from the field of AI, as it's a good way for an AI to find the best solution to a problem, it is not, however, an AI itself, nor is it relegated only to the field of AI.

The Joy of the Guitar Riff

zaust says...

Nice watch but very pop centric. SO many huge riffs never even got a mention. Case in point:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBetudbtRto

My first real introduction to metal when they charts were full of Abba and Boney M.

It's seems weird this is a BBC documentary yet you're as likely to hear of Iron Maiden's achievement's as you to hear of The Prodigy.

Story of the discussion of the riff? They jump from Nivarna (1991) to 7 nation army (2003). But somehow they missed the fact The Prodigy went from a underground dance ground to a rock festival headliner on the basis of this riff back in '95: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l62UTsRQ6qY

Yes "walk this way" was a rap/rock crossover - but this is afaik the first proper metal/underground dance mashup. I honestly hate the fact The Prodigy never get the credit they deserve for bringing so much.

Final point - this UK documentary goes from Nivarna to White Stripes and ignores:

Too long and weird for my taste. Not a good season premiere too. FOX should had just used Family Guy's Simpsons crossover episode for Simpsons' season 26 premiere.

End of an era: signing off final Mercedes-Benz V8 F1 engine

oritteropo says...

The V6 turbo is intended to develop technology that's more applicable to road cars, rather than the previous F1 approach of just spinning the engines faster and making the components thinner and lighter. They are also introducing much more restrictive fuel economy measures (via mandated maximum flow rate to the engine rather than the current limit of as much as you can carry at the start of the race). Also, as the video mentioned, the energy recovery system is going to be more integrated next season.

The new engines specs sound, superficially at least, similar to Indy car engines... I wonder if they will be close enough to allow any crossover?

The first clips of the new engines being fired up have already started to show up on yt:

How To Mount Your Bike On A Roof Rack Like A Boss!

Hive13 says...

I gotta call clear editing on this one. Why not show it from the outside? There is a pretty obvious cut at 0:28 using the door frame as the crossover device. I think we have two versions here, one of him riding up onto the car and another of him simply standing on the roof and strapping down his bike.
