Hockey Fights now available pre-game! Full-teams included!

MilkmanDan says...

Oh, fistfights are definitely treated differently than stick violence. Mild stick-related stuff (taking a short chop at someone with the stick is called a slash, tripping is self explanatory, leading a check/hit with the stick can be charging or a cross check, etc.) is usually given a 2 minute minor penalty. But if you go nuts and just try to lumberjack somebody with your stick (extremely rare, but happens every once in a while), it is treated very harshly with a likely LONG suspension. All that seems pretty well-handled to me -- if your slash or cross check or whatever is is a risky situation that can or does result in injury, those scale up from minor penalties into majors, game misconducts, or possible suspensions.

Fights are a 5 minute major penalty, assuming both sides/fighters intentionally got into it. However, both involved players get the same 5 minute penalty, so since they are coincidental it doesn't result in any actual penalty to the team (not down to 4 players instead of 5 like in a normal penalty) other than the player who was in the fight being unavailable for 5 minutes. A pretty high majority of players who get into fights are designated goons who might be on the ice for 1-3 minutes total of a 60 minute game, compared to 15-17 for a skilled forward or 20+ for a skilled defenseman. So, "losing" that player for 5 minutes is usually really no penalty at all.

However, the "code" of those enforcers/goons is actually a pretty real thing. Many fights (especially in the regular season) are actually a pre-planned thing between the enforcers on each team. They ask if the other guy is up for a fight, as a means to engage the crowd and/or their teammates. If both are up for it, the next time they line up for a faceoff or whatever they will probably contrive some offense and drop the gloves. Those fights are pretty silly, but both sides know what they are getting into and agree to it beforehand, so it isn't SO crazy.

Spontaneous fights usually happen when an average or lesser-skilled player makes a dangerous hit or dirty play against a skilled player on the opposing team. If that happens, their toughest teammate currently on the ice will likely rush to their defense, and if it appears like the offending player did it intentionally they will drop the gloves to "teach them a lesson". These fights seem much more purposeful to me, and if you ask great skilled players like Wayne Gretzky they almost all universally say that this system made things safer and opened up the ice for skilled players.

So, it is all pretty complicated and strange to the uninitiated, but there is a sort of method to the madness.

Interesting. The Economist had a bit this week arguing that some violence (fistfights) seem to be treated much more lightly than violence with sticks, which usually leads to suspensions even though arguably you could have a no tolerance policy for both (or at least be consistently harsh).

#LikeAGirl -- attitudes exposed and transformed

Fairbs says...

What I got out of the video is that 'like a girl' is most often derogatory and that it starts to impact women through their (for lack of a better term or for lack of knowing better) formative years. It can then be a self-fulfilling prophesy and make them feel lesser. All of this is not good and we should try not to use these terms.

However much the video is contrived to make an impact is unimportant. This concept does exist and is well known. I know I've used the term to describe a man that ran 'funny' and I know it was a shitty thing to do. Probably making me feel better in the moment.

I think that as we grow up, we do a lot of shitty things because we don't know better. As I grow older, I want to become better and understand things more. Now into my 40's, I still think I have room for improvement. And when it comes down to it, does it really matter if girls, in general, can't run as fast as guys? I think it matters more that if you want to run fast, you try and do the best you can and you don't even have to have the goal of being faster if you simply enjoy running. There is always going to be someone faster than you unless you are the fastest man or the fastest woman.

Anyway, what's your take on my comments as far as mansplaining goes?

bareboards2 said:

Fuck all, that is a shit load of mansplaining that happened in the last two long posts. Holy hell on a handstick.

Next time the topic of "mansplaining" comes up elsewhere, and folks need an example, the last two comments are the gold standard.

I know that this comment will offend those two posters, and those who think like they do. I'm not going to argue back and forth about it though, because I have learned that is a waste of time. If I thought I could move things, I would engage. I'm older and wiser now.

Besides, I'm offended, too, so we're even.

[edit]
Actually, what I really am is sad. Sad at the cluelessness. The depth of the cluelessness. I started out offended, and wrote the above. But the more I think on it, I'm just sad at the complete lack of understanding. Sad at their need to argue. Sad at the lack of emotional empathy.

And happy at the growing number of people who "get it."

There is hope for the future.

ARRESTED FOR ANTI-OBAMA POSTS

Januari says...

You have to REALLY want to believe everything this 'piece' is reporting, to not even question why they aren't saying what he posted.

A bit contrived is an understatement. Honestly try finding a single article on RT News that isn't pro-Putin or anti-western, particularly anti-US. For those that want to believe this, it will be taken as fact. But you have to really want it!

ARRESTED FOR ANTI-OBAMA POSTS

Fairbs says...

I think there is a lot missing. They present what happened, but they don't say what the comments were. They also have the defense side represented, but nothing from the police. It's not even clear what the charges are. Anyway something seems a bit fishy here to me or at a minimum contrived. I don't think veterans should be persecuted as a group nor any other type of group for that matter. I'm not convinced by this video that they are.

artician said:

This is disgusting. Even the lawyer was exaggerating that it's a "common occurrence" with veterans, just having one person go through it is despicable.

Edgar Wright - How to Do Visual Comedy

Deano says...

I totally agree, Wright is a very inventive film maker. I didn't like The World's End as much as the Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz because it lacked a convincing core concept and felt more contrived. But he still made it visually interesting and there were some good jokes.

Huckabee is Not a Homophobe, but...

enoch says...

@ChaosEngine

i guess i was not clear.
so let me clarify.

i was not defending an artists right to discriminate on the basis of:sexual orientation, gender, race, class etc etc.

i WAS,however, defending an artists right to refuse a commission on their own personal grounds (whatever those might be) and they could do it without making a big deal about it.no need to be specific WHY you refused the commission.just that you wont be able to do the job to the best of your ability and that maybe joe-artist down the street could serve you better.

so you may find darkhands analogy trite and contrived but the basic heart of his comment is true.if his heart aint in it you are gonna get crap as a result.

being an artist for hire is nothing like owning a bagel shop or selling t-shirts.

if i aint feeling it...
i aint doing it.

if you want to project that i refuse because you are gay,or because their is a vagina involved..well..thats on you.
my reasons are my own.
i may share those reasons with you,i may not but i have that right to refuse the commission.

and the artists who DOES share a reason of homophobia or sexism is just dumb and probably not worth hiring anyways.

as for calling out artists who "whore" themselves.
i wasnt thinking of artists who accept money for the work they do.we all have to eat brother and if i used your example, each and every one of us are whores in one capacity or another.

i was actually thinking of the artists who lend their pen, brush, camera and instrument to create propaganda videos, commercials etc etc.

basically anyone who would sell their integrity for a buck.

Huckabee is Not a Homophobe, but...

ChaosEngine says...

So just to be clear, if an artist is homophobic, that's ok?

How about sexist? If I hire a photographer for a corporate event to celebrate the hiring of a new female CEO, it's cool for them to say "nah, I think women should be home raising kids"?

How about racist? How about discriminating on religious grounds? How about just ugly people? "I would shoot your wedding, but frankly, you're both just hideous and let's face it you don't need photos reminding you of that"

Fuck that.

The difference between the real situation of someone being discriminated on sexual orientation and @Darkhand's ridiculously contrived example of being forced to write a song about hating cats is that hating cats is perfectly socially and legally acceptable. Discriminating against people based on ethnicity, gender or orientation is not.

If you "take photos, make videos, design clothes" you're not an artist, you're a business. Your business happens to include art but you're already "whoring" yourself by offering your services for money. And the price of doing business is that you agree to abide by laws, one of which says that you cannot discriminate based on certain attributes.

OTOH, if you're a landscape artist who's commissioned by an oil company and you want to say "nope, I am not ethically comfortable with you" then yes, you have the right to refuse.

enoch said:

why is @Darkhand 's comment so hard to comprehend?
i would even take it a step further, because i have done it,and point the customer to another venue who would better serve them.

no muss.
no fuss.
and nobodies wittle feewings got hurt.

now if we take @Hanover_Phist 's analogy.
well thats a whole different animal.thats about integrity.
if i have committed myself to a venue,i honor my promises.if something about that venue bothers me then i better suck it up and maybe next time pay closer attention to who i was dealing with at the time of contract negotiations (been there as well).

so the disagreement between darkhand and hanover are really semantics and not relevant to each other.

and @VoodooV ,you are confusing 'artist" with "whore"....difference.

though there is no shortage of "artists" who "whore" themselves, but im gonna guess that darkhand is not one of those artists.

come to think of it,i can see how that can be confusing looking at the current state of art in regards to pop culture....

fuck me im getting old...and cranky.

dont judge me!
and get off my lawn!

So... if Star Wars is all about action, adventure, chivalry, pirate movies and swashbuckling, WTF is up with the prequels?

Lucas forgot about all that and thought, "You know what this series needs is some galactic C-Span, whiny teenagers, overly contrived plots, and cutesey CGI comic-relief characters. Oh and don't forget a double-dose of nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo (because Luke didn't sell it enough in Empire)."

People that give a fuck about the true direction of the planet who like to blabber-on ad-naseum about which news corp is their favorite and which one is full of morons, and if you like them well then you must be a moron, or (insert meaningless label here) are the most gullible, the most extremely out-of-touch with what's truly going on. They have let their minds become a sponge for distraction and illusion by the very machine that rapes the planet of human and natural resources for personal gain and consolidation of power.

The mind is a terrible thing to waste on feeding the very machine that enslaves us all.

As a simple example of just how secondary oil would be as a universal commodity you need only to look at who controls the access. If we'd gone the direction of the Bucky Fullers and Teslas that pop-into the grid in every epoch, and shared collectively in a similar mind and vision, people who pick winners and losers would be non-existent or self-aware, and the real criminals on the planet posing as so-called leaders would be raving in asylums or extinct by now.

Why won't the planet use nuclear energy correctly and righteously for example...SAFE power from the atomic components that make up the experiential world?? Because assholes and criminals run the show. Period.

Same with oil. Same with slavery through economic monopoly, same with the mind-control apparatus that force-feeds the gullible their world views based on their insidious, contrived models.

There are way better drugs out there than politics kids......Use your fucking brains?!

The problem with GW responsibility of individuals could be solved in a single, collective stroke if humanity stopped buying shit they don't need-LIKE electric lights after sundown, LIKE fossil fuels, LIKE industrially manufactured bullshit for the masses. If anyone needs to pay carbon taxes it's the machine that teaches each new generation to over-extend their luxuries for the sake of the bowing at the alter of a contrived system printing the unnecessary, HARD CURRENCY.

Things are ugly enough as it is.

It used to be that if spooks needed your passphrase, they'd sneak in an put a bug in your keyboard... but if they have the private keys to sign replacement firmware for your keyboard then they don't even need to sneak in any more (actually I'm not sure my keyboard even needs signed firmware).

I think someone cleverer than me could probably contrive a defense against that particular attack, but I'm not in the habit of checking the integrity of my peripherals, or working in a tempest shielded room.

I think strong crypto is probably safe, but in the real world the crypto is hardly ever the weakest link.

I'm hoping it really is mainly procedural means the NSA have. Already before this, I've been operating under the assumption anything I haven't personally encrypted using keys controlled only by me is not secure. Used to be I only went the whole mile when I felt it was necessary, now I'm starting to move as much of my net presence into the dark as I can, out of principle more than any immediate need. But if strong crypto is compromised, as some now worry... Things get ugly.

That's How You Report the News in Detroit!

artician says...

Do not confuse this local station with their better-known national opinion-brothel. This guy is legit.

As a disclaimer: I care nothing about Detroit, I avoid buying American cars, I never watch Fox news (or any TV at all, really), and I have an ingrained hate for most journalists, but I do care about people.

This reporter is a Detroit native, and after leaving for several years (education, career, etc) came back to find a city steeped in shit. There are several clips of his reporting online, and every one is something that should be celebrated as a victory by the common man over a system that cares nothing about him (links below).
He can be a bit contrived and over-dramatic at times, but I would say he excels at walking the line between what's viewable on television, and the rage that anyone who is actually paying attention to what's happening around us would feel. He is amazingly tempered in his demeanor, and I can only assume he has to do more than one take in order to not show his anger.

Regardless, I read a lot. I hardly ever read non-fiction. His other reports were so genuine and passionate that, just last week, I checked out the book he authored titled "Detroit". I've yet to have time to open a page, but his work and what he is doing makes me eager to read it. The news clips of his that I have seen made me consider the guy as the pinnacle of journalistic reporting in the US.

The guys appearance might make him look like a douche, but I really feel like this is the modern day hero that we write comics about. Nothing will save the city of Detroit outside of Robocop, and I think it's destined to be abandoned and forgotten, but we should all support people who's actions are obviously in favor of those who need our help most. Even if they're on a Fox channel.
