Spends a thousand to go Heli skiing, and then...

newtboy says...

He's incredibly lucky.

If his bindings were so loose that he lost a ski flopping over like that, there's no way he would have made it down anyway. Better to fail at 5 mph in powder than 50+ over a cliff.

Also, what kind of back country skier can't ski with just one ski? I could before I was 10.

Republican Tax Scam Is Handwritten Nonsense

bobknight33 says...

tow the leftest party line.

Yep we be throwing grandma off the cliff and cutting school lunch for little johnny.

Lets not forget this tax plan is Armageddon --

No wonder you party has lost its ass in elections over the last 8 years.

The elitist raping party of snow flake stupidity.

My grand kids will only be able to read history books of this defunct klan party

The Republicans don't do tax reform (or math), they just raise taxes on the poor and middle class and give handouts to rich and corporations.

FTFY.

Keep in mind he told us he would run the country like one of his business, which means run it into the ground and embezzle funds until bankrupt and he gets barred from running things. His first likely legislation adds over 1 trillion to the debt so his kids can keep an extra billion of his money. That pretty much destroys any fiscal argument you could have had against democrats permanently.

Russians doing sketchy sh*t

Jeebus, did anyone else get a feeling like that of being sick from looking over the edge when he hung upside down??? I thought I was about to watch someone die ala' Cliff Hanger.

Motorcycle Drives Off Cliff

Fairbs says...

was it brave for him to drive his motorcycle over a cliff at 65?

was it a heroic act for that kid to help the old guy down the escalator? personally I thought that one was borderline racist

Drachen_Jager said:

Sorry, but crawling out for help is not "brave".

Bravery is putting yourself at risk to help other people. Putting yourself through pain in order to survive is mere survival instinct. Most times, bravery is the opposite of survival instinct. People who run up to burning cars to help the occupants out are brave. Soldiers who storm machine gun nests are brave.

That word has been so watered down by the contemporary American need for "heroes" it's becoming meaningless.

Fear of heights will not deter this dad

AeroMechanical says...

I'm not afraid of heights (outside of the normal sense of being afraid of anything that will kill me), and I had to do exactly the same thing to look over the edge at the Cliffs of Moher. Going in, I thought I was going to be cool about it and just walk right up and look over the edge, but about five or six feet from the edge my hindbrain said "no sir, bad idea" and took away my voluntary movement privileges.

Helicopter Rescue Accident

jimnms says...

It has a fan driven by the main gearbox. It's pretty rare for those to fail, but does spin like it lost control of yaw though. My first thought was since it's landing so close to the edge of that cliff, if the wind is moving from the right to left, there is going to be a big updraft coming over the cliff.

Watching it again, it looks like the pilot is having to fight some wind and seems to be having trouble keeping it down. Between 40-45 seconds, it looks like the wind changes as the helicopter appears to lift up and weather-vane into the wind just before losing control.

I found this video which is in German. If the Google auto-translate isn't too off, it says the cause is still unknown, but whoever they're interviewing at the end speculates that the helicopter was too heavy for the altitude it was operating at.

Neil deGrasse Tyson on Science Denial

ChaosEngine says...

*quality

I disagree with one thing though. It's not a cliff face, true, but it's not a flat slope either. It's worse than that.

As more scientists/engineers/whatever decide that the US is no longer the place to be, the problem actually accelerates. You will eventually reach a point where the problem is so bad, it may as well be a cliff face.

17 Programs Trump will cut that cost you $22 yr - Nerdwriter

bobknight33 says...

To be fair some of those programs should be eliminated. In the big picture these table scrap spending issues.

Homeless need food and shelter more than I need PBS or GOV funded arts programs.

Americans need to work longer before opting for social security.

Our defense spending does need to be cut.

Our national debt does need to be lowered.

WE need not to be fighting if /when defenses cutting / social security adjustments issues come up.

Death panels and throwing grandma off the cliff scare tactics need to stop.

Bill Burr Doesn’t Have Sympathy For Hillary Clinton

SDGundamX says...

Why does it have to be one or the other? It's pretty clear a huge group of racist/misogynistic people rallied around Trump for saying the things that they thought but couldn't say out loud in public. Him saying those things and not getting absolutely destroyed for it (thanks to mass media which just ate it up as fuel for ratings) brought them out of the woodwork, if not the woods exactly.

On the other hand, Hillary herself failed time and again to capitalize on his gaffs. Clearly her strategy of just letting him implode without actually trying to push him off a cliff herself backfired. Burr is right that the advice she got not to sink to his level, not to outright challenge the outrageous stuff he was saying (and now doing) was wrong. She picked the wrong team of people to advise her. She didn't campaign in key swing states. She (and to honest most Americans) vastly underestimated the desperation of the poorest blue collar workers around the U.S. She never had a clear campaign platform other than to show up, look smug, and essentially say "Hey, at least I'm not THAT guy!" There were people who took that to mean she represented the status quo. They might have hated what Trump was saying but they hated the status quo even more and voted accordingly.

So, in my mind, it's both things. She absolutely made mistakes AND a shitload of emboldened bigots came out to vote. It was the combination of these things that caused her downfall.
