Mom Does Doll Do-Overs With A Natural Look And Wins Internet

Get Your Lemon Face Ready

Harzzach says...

There are parents, filming weird & crazy & sweet & charming stuff their children are doing. Just because these things happen. And then there are parents, who set their children up, to create a certain situation which they can film.

Bahfest 2014: Why Do Mammals Sleep?

I like to imagine that this was a final presentation for a scientific course. Everyone loved her wit and charm but she flunked out and still has to pay student loans on top of that. Now in an attempt to share her story, she realized stand up comedy at ah hoc speech events gives her more basic satisfaction.

Colbert interviews Anita Sarkeesian

Asmo says...

Yes, she's great at pointing that out.

What's the solution?

Quota's of protagonists sex? Replacing "damsel" with "prince" in distress? Getting rid of chainmail bikinis?

Oh, and how do we propagate that to the entire entertainment industry?

There is nothing wrong with playing a prince and rescuing a princess. There is nothing wrong with the princess being helpless. There is nothing wrong with Femmeshep kicking the shit out of the reapers and saving every being in the known universe, one of the most badass female protagonists around. More female protagonists = great, bring it on, but that's no reason to throw out a trope as old as time (incidentally, a trope enjoyed by a great many women who like to watch sappy romances where the charming fellow rescues the woman from her crappy life...).

Her series predicates on the concept that players are too fucking dumb to understand the difference between real life and the game. That if you play Duke Nukem, you'll walk around slapping girls tits and saying the most inappropriate things you can think of.

It's exactly the same tripe that Jack Thompson was peddling back in the day, games change how you think. And, for most people (ie. the mentally stable...), it was wrong then and it's wrong now. Your upbringing and parental guidance, and the relationship your male role models have with women, are far more likely to determine whether or not a man is likely to be sexist/misogynist than a few games with scantily clad girls needing a big strong man to save them... Society has changed to become more accepting of race, creed, sexual orientation and, of course, women, and it will continue to become so even if the old trope of the princess is in another castle hangs around. It may take generations before inequality dies out, if it ever does. It's not something you can fix by complaining about games.

SDGundamX said:

Her videos don't make the argument that games cause violence against women or anyone else. She analyzed the roles of women in games and found trends in how they were portrayed. These were not flattering portrayals (for example the "Damsel in Distress" portrayal) and male characters were not often treated in the same way in games. She's pointing out how off-putting that can be to potential and actual female gamers and recommending women be portrayed in a more realistic manner. She's also pointing out how games are reinforcing the sexist and misogynistic messages that already exist in society. I don't think she is claiming media is the root cause of either sexism or misogyny.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

Trancecoach says...

The reason why these campaigns will get nowhere: the subtleties asked for are sometimes too arbitrary and too subjective to expect large numbers to go along with it and because women are not always mind readers (contrary to what this one may think), and misinterpretations can easily occur. Some dangerous psychos and sociopaths actually come across as being quite "charming," while some friendly and innocuous comments may be interpreted as being rather creepy. So, campaigns like this will get nowhere in actually changing anything for the better.

The skills of understanding context will continue to devolve as communities break down (along with families and childhood education). Increasingly, we are living in a society of strangers, and this is yet another result of the statism that progressives continue to defend. See, it's all about feeling safe. And without community, contexts that feel safe become more scarce. A state-driven "society" is not a community.

Meanwhile, in reality, the very attempt to legislate behavior like this will serve to further develop two trends: the "catcall" culture they so dislike and something along the lines of what's going on in Japan, the other opposite. Despite what this video attempts to portray, I have already heard the complaint many many times from women that they either get harassment or they get no attention at all.

And this'll be yet another "I told you so" that they'll miss.

necessary illusions-thought control in democratic societies

*quality Chomsky, as always

The question at 44:03 is just as relevant today as it was a quarter of a century ago.

I would argue that a precarious situation with regards to your income is just as effective a pacifier as the usual bread & games are. A zero-hour contract, or a wage that requires you to get a second/third job, effectively prevents you from participating in civil society. You don't have the time nor the energy to become informed, and you sure as hell are not going to become involved, either. And everything's left for the good old boys club to decide...

Maybe they've overcooked it in Greece and Spain, maybe not. But it works like a charm in Germany, where a great number of people are struggling enough to prevent them from getting any funky ideas, yet not enough to have them pick up their pitchforks and torches.

Well...........THAT'S Gratitude For You!!!

What this movie did was talus we should never take gratitude for granite. He'd have won in any quartz of public opinion, and furthermore is so impressive if any female judge presided, he'd have boulder over with his charms.

100 Reasons Why Evolution Is STUPID!

Yogi says...

Without having watched the video I can tell you that evolution is quite stupid. It makes tons of mistakes, or really dumb decisions that no engineer would ever make. That's one reason that we know it exists.

Also so far watch this, he seems charming and funny. Doesn't mean he knows stuff.

I guess it's the holier-than-thou, condescending attitude over Lantern's just being wrong...

I agree on one item though, they are both ass beef.

There are more than a couple others, but that's the one which was my "telephone pole that broke the camel's back".

I'm still not seeing the difference. Everything you said about SB equally applies to Lantern except for the details of the problem (like it being non-scientific, and so forth).

"Allowing" opinions like SBs also makes it possible to begin to understand the "wrong" side of the argument. I've sharpened these atheist claws considerably speaking with SB.

I don't remember SB attacking anyone. Can you link to an example?
