Negative Badges (Controversy Talk Post)

NordlichReiter says...

>> ^jiyanibi:

Personally, I think "no" on the sifter-assigned badges. Too much drama. And "maybe" on the "achievement" style badges. If you go for the achievement style badges, here are a few I just thought of...
"Resident Republican"...consistently downvoted comments in the Politics channel.
"The QuantuMushroom Award"...use the word "obamarxist" (or any other conservative talking point portmanteau) in more than half of your comments.
You know, something QM and WP can wear with pride.

The word portmanteau makes me think of a cajun sandwiches; and now I'm hungry.

Hypocrites... the whole lot of ya! (Wtf Talk Post)

Let's ask Videosiftbannedme? The dirty selflinker turned out alright didn't he?

I don't if I turned out "alright" per se. The jury is still out on that one.

As for the topic, no, I don't agree with "un-banning" him, even if agreed on via a poll. While true I got banned for being ignorant and not reading the rules regarding self-linking, my ban was due to my own mistake. I didn't repeatedly tell the admin to fuck off, throw a hissy fit because I couldn't have another channel, and basically piss off half the Sift with my rambunctiousness. I understand your position and how you feel about it being hypocritical, SG. But by posting Choggie's videos (and even making fun of them, if an admin did so), they aren't being hypocritical. Being hypocritical would be doing exactly what you postulated earlier: "un-banning" Choggie. (I know you've since changed your position, of which I now support). If Choggie wants to be part of the community again, then let him prove his worth by creating a new account, and following the rules like the rest of the boys and girls here. (No condescension inferred; I just like using different verbiage).

If Choggie wants to post his new fangled Cajun-cookin' show on YouTube, then you have to expect someone from here to post it...admins included.

And hey, if we are on the path to un-ban-ination, can I get my old account reinstated? j/k

(Oh, and I love it when you talk dirty, Swampy. "Dirty self-linker" I'll be playing with my Joydick tonight with that one... )

*update: Actually, strike my comment regarding "even if agreed to via a poll." This is a democracy after all. If the majority wins, then so be it. But I think he should have some sort of account restriction forcing the use of good grammar and punctuation.

terminology (Blog Entry by jwray)

jonny says...

Well said, Diogenes. Except that you and jwray seem to have forgotten, as has the rest of North America, the people that were here first.

What label would you apply to them jwray? Or are you simply assuming that all of the 'indigenous' people have been successfully assimilated?

Hint: they have not been. Go take a ride down highway 1. Yeah, they have by force learned the new language, but they have not forgotten their own language or culture.

Open your minds and realize that these labels you keep throwing around are as meaningless as the hair on your knuckles.

I get where you're coming from dude. Yes, the term LatinAmerican is pretty silly. But no more so than Hispanic, or Mexican, or Spanish, is to describe the group of people you're referring to. And if it ever comes up in local conversation, those folks that abandoned Canada for the swamps of Louisiana - we're just fine with Cajun. NOT Creole. (Labels die hard, don't they? )

Woah. Their accents sound nothing like Australian... clearly South African. You yanks need to get out more

You know... BisH0p69 had the right idea. They ARE similar. We're not talking about confusing Scottish with Romanian here. Try getting over yourself and your internet-chic Yank-hating and simply admit that they're somewhat similar.
Sure... if you're around them all the time, it's easy. But I don't get on you about not telling the difference between a Cajun and an Appalachian hick.
Obviously there's no reason you'd be around an Appalachian hick (thank your lucky stars) but my point has been demonstrated.
That being said, thinker's comment cracked me up.

Hahaha. You crack me up. And while I was only joking about the "yank" thing, I must say that "Try getting over yourself and your internet-chic Yank-hating and simply admit that they're somewhat similar" is definitely a typical Yank-defence and I will not admit they are somewhat similar because they aren't... anymore than Irish-english is "somewhat" similar to Spanish-english

I would LOVE to know someone that's an authentic cajun cook. About the only folks I know that can cook old southern food now are pretty old.
Who's passing this knowledge down?

Go down Bayou Lafourche or Bayou Terrebonne and everyone can cook like that. I can make a mean chicken gumbo myself. BTW, half the people in my family have his accent.

I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

What an odd coincidence, though - such is fame these days, eh?

I may have met that same homeless guy. I flew in to Cleveland for a Do Make Say Think/Broken Social Scene (both from Toronto) show and a guy asked us that in downtown Cleveland. Maybe just a popular attention grabber. He ended up getting some really good cajun catfish and pizza leftovers out of us.

This beggar/homeless guy in Cleveland taught me that one - we had a good laugh because we were, of course, visiting from Canada, so we weren't sure how to respond to the question until he delivered the kicker.
