anytime my man.
your voice and input has been sorely missed.
sometimes this site does appear to be one giant circlejerk and the hornets nest should be poked from time to time.

all the great agitators left (you being one of them) and y'all left me to carry the water.
and lets be honest...i dont have the skills to get peeps to lose their shit quite as deftly as you do.
choggie was great but he was too passionate and would devolve into a giant rage machine.
i miss that fucker as well, our own little mysanthrope.

complacency and apathy can be just as destructive as rage and anger.

there are some intelligent and thoughtful people here on the sift but with nobody challenging their conceptions and worldviews they end up spending the majority of their time smelling their own farts and calling them good.

so i hope your visit is not a short one.
these people NEED you.
they just dont know it yet.

i mean look.
you post a single video.

13 Misconceptions About Global Warming - Veritasium

artician says...

Have you tried getting a law through congress lately?

I think that's pretty much it. The money going into these Republicans to hold up legislation is enough to keep them rooted in their seats. The same money more than likely keeps the media doing just enough to convince their respective constituents as well, so they won't get voted out anytime soon. Ignorance is the kryptonite of progress.

And @Enzoblue: I completely understand the frustration, but even if the facts are correct, in practice this kind of presentation is no better than fox news. It makes people who agree with it feel justified and superior in their beliefs, but it does nothing for converting the non-believers to understanding, which is inarguably precisely what we need to be doing.

SquidCap said:

Why do we have to listen to small minority on this anymore? They had their chance of refuting, they failed. We wont ever agree on everything anyway, that hasn't stopped us for making new rules that affect everyone. AGW supporters are overwhelmingly the majority. And don't start Godwining me, i'm talking about democratic process where majority rules.

Democracy Now!: Why did NBC pull veteran reporter from Gaza?

Yogi says...

I find this to be the most difficult subject to tackle when it comes to breaking through the bullshit. No matter what facts there are you're always considered wrong, and so are the Palestinians. There are so many true believers in this and misinformation out there that you can't have an argument about this subject at all it seems.

So it's very important we have clear, concise, and intelligent reporting. NBC had that, so they pulled him out. You can't ask these sorts of questions in polite company, it's not allowed. NBC show'd how subservient to power they are in such an obvious way it's laughable. People talk about Fox news all the time, and yeah they're pretty stupid at times. The entire media has a problem though, and it's plain to see anytime something like this happens.

I wait patiently and study constantly for the day when we are allowed to talk about the Israel/Palestine conflict candidly and honestly. Right now whenever a discussion happens there's no give whatsoever. Israel is right, and they're doing the right thing, not even a misstep. I think in any position over the course of history, that can't possibly be correct. No government is 100% right and just, but don't tell their supporters that.

Russell Brand " Is Fox News More Dangerous Than Isis? "

Yogi says...

Just wrong huh, Ok then this is gonna be fun.

Firstly I was answering the question posed by Russell Brand "Is Fox News more dangerous than ISIS?" Which any reasonable person, especially those who have had a family member blown away in Iraq recently can say NO They are NOT.

Second Point, was it Fox that was convincing the American Public of WMDs and warmongering, or was it everyone? There wasn't a channel you could find that wasn't fully behind the government because that is what they do. In this area Fox isn't special, you could've turned on CNN and MSNBC at anytime and seen a 95% to 5% reporting in for the war and against.

Also the fact that the public was much of a factor in the run up to war, not as much as you'd think. There was simply a lot of ambivalence but support for our troops. Due to the fact that we have an all volunteer mercenary force it's just a lot easier to ignore that Johnny is being marched off to war. It's not right, it's just how it is.

In conclusion, Fox, the News Network isn't worse than ISIS. They're just not, end of.

EDIT: Also it doesn't seem like I should have to point this out to people but I guess I do. Russell Brand is a funny comedian, he is not fucking Noam Chomsky. He isn't around to provide cogent analysis and if I met him I would agree with some things he says and destroy him on his ridiculous hyperbole. He's not meant to report to us in an honest way, that's not what he does that's not what he's known for. Look for people like this to inject insight into the discussion and you get exactly what you deserve.

Wrong. The US gov needs shrills like FOX to keep the public 'on-board'. Classic example being the whole WMD charade. The US public needs to think they are 'spreading freedom'. If they were ever aware of the terrorism it's own government dishes out, the American psyche would collapse and there might be actual protests (and more). Which is why I like Brand's debunking of said propaganda and war mongering.
Do you think it's a coincidence the bitch is brown ? I even think they darkened her a bit.
CNN also did it with some other war mongering Lebanese cunt recently.

Reversing Arrow Optical Illusion

anri1 says...

When the arrow is moved to a particular distance behind the glass, it looks like it reversed itself. When light passes from one material to another, it can bend or refract. In the experiment that you just completed, light traveled from the air, through the glass, through the water, through the back of the glass, and then back through the air, before hitting the arrow. Anytime that light passes from one medium, or material, into another, it refracts.

Just because light bends when it travels through different materials, doesn't explain why the arrow reverses itself. To explain this, you must think about the glass of water as if it is a magnifying glass. When light goes through a magnifying glass the light bends toward the center. Where the light all comes together is called the focal point, but beyond the focal point the image appears to reverse because the light rays that were bent pass each other and the light that was on the right side is now on the left and the left on the right, which makes the arrow appear to be reversed.

College Humor: Engagement Rings Are A Bullshit Scam

Bruti79 says...

I didn't get one for my wife, we both didn't see the point. A ring isn't needed to say why you're together. Anytime I talk about getting her something nice from a jewellery store, we just decide to go on vacation instead. =D

F1 Pit Stop Perfection

What is Going on in Venezuela.

RedSky says...

Regardless of what happens with these protests, Venezuela is a classic example of a country where a vast proportion of people have conflated Chavez's socialist policies with the country's oil and gas fueled growth from the early 2000s to the GFC. Nothing is likely to change that anytime soon even if there were a change of government.

The problem recently has been the combination of the new president Maduro who does not have Chavez populist legitimacy and the QE tapering in the US which is seeing currencies slide in emerging markets, but mostly in countries that had issues to begin with (Argentina, Turkey, Venezuela).

Economically the country is screwed because of the hugely corrupt and inefficient state owned energy companies, the expropriation and nationalisation of the agricultural sector. The government has responded with minimum wage hikes, printing money and capital controls on currency conversion which all just forestall the inevitable crisis.

As usual with countries like these, what props up the government is the system of patronage between the government and the elite/military. If the government were to make their state run firms efficient and/or privatise them, they couldn't skim off the top. If they can't skim off the top they have no money, no authority and they get thrown out.

Bernie Sanders tears into Walmart for corporate welfare

lantern53 says...

Basically, anytime big gov't gets involved in anything, prices go up. Examples are everywhere. Doctors used to come to people's homes, then gov't got involved.

How about we dis-empower gov't?

If you think the gov't, by raising the minimum wage, will allow people to be wealthier, you are as naive as all the socialist academics who teach the crap you read on these boards.

WTF Happened to Movie Posters?

RedSky says...

Exactly. It's why trailers nowadays reveal just about everything. It's why we're not getting off superhero movies anytime soon.

The movie industry in the last 10 years has seen a bifurcation into either cheap indie flicks or super expensive international blockbusters with the middle largely disappearing. Since major studios are increasingly relying on fewer and more expensive super blockbusters, any semblance of risk taking has gone out the window.

It's all remakes, adaptations, re-remakes. The plots are made as basic as possible with no particularly cultural inclination lest foreign cultures are confused. Movie posters are no different. If teal and orange signifies action thriller and fosters a positive association with previous flicks then like hell they're going to change it.

Magicpants said:

I don't think it has much to do with money, the studios could certainly afford to make great art for each of their movies. It comes down to what sells, cryptic artwork doesn't really tell you what's in a movie. You need to think of a poster as a 3 second commercial for your movie.
