How Digital Is Your World

ChaosEngine says...

>> ^Peroxide:

Cell phones are immoral, from the slave labor mining of precious metals to the sweat shop assembly, to the toxic waste shipped back to china.
Your sentiments are cliche and your herd mentality a detriment to the global herd.

Cell phones are not immoral. Slave labor mining, sweat shop assembly and toxic waste pollution are definitely immoral, but don't confuse the ends with the means. Our desire for cell phones may not justify the immoral actions used to produce them, but that doesn't mean the cell phones themselves or our desire to use them, is wrong.

As for the poem, technology is amoral. It is a tool, which can be used to enslave or enhance your life. Would he have said the same thing about the printing press?

I have acquired knowledge, discovered art and laughed at the world (and yes those things have equal value) on this site alone, and that means the internet makes my life better. I have had visceral, collaborative, experiences in online games I could never have in real life (at least, until the zombie apocalypse hits).

But it's a part of my life, not the whole. Guitar hero doesn't compare to actually playing guitar. SSX has none of "oh crap, I've overcooked this and now I'm really gonna hurt" adrenaline rush of actually snowboarding. As much as I love taking down a room of thugs in Arkham Aslyum, it's a pale shadow of the intricacy of martial arts.

So yeah, take what you want from the web, but go have a beer with some friends every now and then

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

gwiz665 says...

That will never be a controversy. That's just like calling someone's face ugly. It will be shrugged off.

No, to get a proper controversy: I call your core beliefs INTO QUESTION!!

There hasn't been a lot of controversy lately on the Sift, has there?
Part of me is relieved. Part of me misses the drama and adrenaline rush.
The part that is relieved is much bigger.

I hate you and every stupid thing that you say.

Veteran shot in the face by Police at Occupy Oakland

I know this is serious but "MEDIC!... MEDIIIIIC!" Where do these people think they are, Omaha fucking beach.

I get where you are coming from, and I pretty much agree that it is a bit overly dramatic. On the other hand, I can only say this:
If I was in that situation myself and was suddenly being rocked by flash grenade explosions and other shit popping off all around me, then saw some dude being limply carried away with a bloodied head, apparently unable to speak... I'd be pretty impressed with myself if I managed to shout something as coherent as "MEDIC!", rather than "blauahhahahhahhahghwaa".
That kind of adrenaline rush lets instinct take over rather than logic, so I can cut them some slack on the melodrama.

Maybe they were trying to get him Uber'd?

Too soon?

Lawsuit After Guy Tasered 6 Times For Crooked License Plate

jwray says...

Most of the time when somebody stopped for a routine traffic violation gets out of the car with one hand in their baggy jacket pocket instead of following the normal protocol, it's because they're going to pull a gun on the cop. That freaks the cop out understandably. The cop has a valid self defense reason for giving those orders, and you have to understand that he's having an adrenaline rush for the first couple minutes of the video because he thought he was about to get shot at the very beginning. Completely ignoring every single thing the cop says and disobeying all his orders gets you tasered. The cop overreacted, but guy who got tasered was a naive idiot who should have seen it coming. By 2:00 or so the cop should have realized what was going on and come to his senses enough to defuse the situation by talking instead of continuing down the same path that obviously wasn't working.

Roddick Wins With "The Best Shot of my Life"

Game Trailers World of Warcraft "Cataclysm" Review

braindonut says...

While playing the new content, my wife said to me "I can't believe I even played this game before." That's how good the new content is.

I have to admit, I look back at the original game, and I wonder the same thing.

>> ^Jinx:

Its amazing how much hard work people put themselves through to play WoW.
I've tried it multiple times on various trials and offers and each time I burn out somewhere in the mid20s. Leveling just isn't fun, too much of that game seems boring and repetitive. It frustrates me that they go to so much effort to great such a amazing vast world but then fail to make the gameplay or leveling etc at all engaging. And then they ask you to pay for it.
To enjoy SC2 I think you really have to enjoy playing games competitively. Its nowhere near the vastness of WoW and it just doesn't offer the same escapism, but the adrenaline rush I get from winning SC2 games is really beyond compare. I haven't even completed the campaign, the only progression I care about is ladder ranking.
Different games for different gamers I guess. Got fingers crossed for Guild Wars 2 though.

Shooting A Goat From Over Half A Mile Away

petpeeved says...

This man ends a life that he feels is of less worth than a momentary adrenaline rush.

The lack of empathy is staggering.

Not saying hunting is wrong or evil if done out of need but the act of killing for pleasure makes me a bit queasy, to say the least.

17 Year Old Kid is Tazed at Phillies Game.

>> ^arekin:

I love how we as the videosift community will regularly laugh at people getting hurt while doing stupid things that they know can get them hurt but the instant an officer is involved and acting within the limits we assign to them its no longer funny and we have to take offence that the cop did anything at all. The kid broke the law, it was obvious that he was in better shape than his pursuers, rather than let him continue to interrupt the game the officer did what I feel is the right course of action and used non-deadly force to restrain a suspect fleeing police custody.
Kid had it coming and his fall was damn funny.

If he shot HIMSELF with the taser, that'd be funny. If he elected to be shot by a taser, that'd be funny. What he did do was elected to run around and possibly be tackled by security, like EVERYBODY. That's the price you pay. That's the adrenaline rush he wanted to capture. He had no idea, that anybody would use a taser, because it's extreme, and it's just not the right way to handle the situation.
