Freedom of Assembly Takes it in the Wrong Hole

entr0py says...

>> ^Nithern:
Anyone know exactly what this demonstration was about or in regards to? Or what the police officers are doing in gear and marching to disperse a crowd?

Yeah, at first I found it odd that nowhere in the description here or on youtube is there any hint of what the protesters were on about. But after a little digging it seems that it was a protest of the G20 meeting. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/27/world/27protest.html?hpw

What makes it confusing is that a myriad of groups, each with their own very different causes are protesting at the same time. The guy on the loudspeaker is apparently 9/11 conspiracy theorist (from youtube description). There were also anti-war protesters, free Tibet protesters, Palestinian occupation protesters, anti-capitalism protesters, environmentalists, Falun Gong (an oppressed Chinese religious group) protesters, anarchists, and a steel workers union. . . protesting something, I'm guessing people not buying enough steel.

Americans are cowards. (Horrorshow Talk Post)

The Dali Llama's (current dude.. regardless of his possible past misdeeds in tibet) response when asked how he can deal with all the horrible things in the world.

In effect he says:

In my world, those things don't happen.

Meaning, when it comes down to YOU, when it IS in your power.. you do the right thing.

Not taking arms to my government, which consists mainly of my fellow citizens TRYING to live their own lives, does not make me a coward.

I am a coward for completely different reasons. They have nothing to do with apathy, or aquiesing, or ignorance, or fear of the world. It's because I know myself.

I have faith, though I am not religious, and my faith is that life goes on, and trends to justice, and that I can be a part of that. My faith overcomes the fear and makes me strong... not so strong I can avoid engaging in petty arguments like whether or not an entire nation's population is cowardly... but it keeps me going, and I have faith one day I wont be afraid of myself.

Should we kill more in response to killing? Stellar, I dont think violence works; logically it only begets more violence. So... You have no logic here, no ethical ground to attack from, and your emotional argument is just that: reactionary and spastic. No one is a coward here except for the sniper. Not even you.

G20 Meltdown - Death of Ian Tomlinson

moodonia says...

Theres video of this and the aftermath from more than one angle. He was walking away from the officer who attacked him.

According to ITN after he was knocked down the protesters helped him to his feet, he said some things to the Police, walked around the corner and collapsed.

At that point an ITN staffer went to get Police help and described the Police as "uninterested". Then he received first aid from a group of Police officers.

At no point did protesters hinder the Police from giving aid.

Terrible stuff, clearly this officer is not worthy of the job, at worst it further discredits how crowd control is handled by the Police in London, wearing masks, why? A mild example being how the Police used their vans to block all sight of peaceful Tibet protesters from the visiting Chinese premier.

The Atheist Delusion

messenger says...

>> ^gwiz665:
Naw, I was being facetious. My point was more that when a religion actively requires you to recruit and thus "save" people, a follower would be obligated to spread their belief.

Maybe where you are, all Christians recruit, but that hasn't been my experience at all. The only ones who have ever tried to recruit me are the Pious Bastards of Latter-day Saints 18-year-old Men-in-Black "Elders," and I run into a pod of them only once every couple years. Maybe I'm just lucky.

A deeply religious person in power scares me, even if they keep it under wraps.

If you mean a literalist, then yes, that's scary. If you just mean someone who uses a religion for spirituality, I can't agree with you. I would much prefer someone with a strong moral compass (not to be confused with a guy who claims to receive instructions from God) be in power than just some guy.

On a related note, most religions are extremely jealous about people leaving their religion (apostasy).

That's a major sign of weakness on their part. Anything that hints that they might be wrong (which at some level, they must know) must be demonized, just like China not letting Tibet or Taiwan leave the country peacefully.

when people actually believe that something is different just because they pray, it's ones birthday or it's xmas there is an intellectual dissonance, because nothing has changed.

People who believe they can change the world by praying alone are deluding themselves, IMO, but so what. Let them pray.

On the other hand, I've heard Mother Theresa variously quoted as saying, "Prayer without action is no prayer at all," or "Prayer without action is just a wish." A lot of people find the strength to take action from without by praying. It has worked since prayer was invented, and continues to work now. Surely, it's a placebo effect, but even the placebo effect is documented as effective. If people can heal themselves, nail that job interview, ditch that abusive husband, take care of lepers, or even stand up to their parish priest with the strength they perceive they get from prayer, then I'm all for it.

The only way we advance as a species is through science and technology, religion is very similar to what it was a thousand years ago.

Surely, in the big picture, the only measure for progress has to be how we act towards our fellow people, other living creatures, and the planet.

Science, and our acceptance of new paradigms, is arguably a measure of progress as a species, but I don't consider technology a measure of progress at all. If we can't learn to communicate peacefully, we're going to nuke ourselves into oblivion. That's not progress. If we can't learn to use the resources we have in a sustainable way, we're going to undo all the scientific and technological "progress" we've made by making it impossible to use.

New thought: The biggest problem with the atheist backlash is that brings to a halt so much philosophical discussion about what is good and right, because anyone who talks about that stuff comes off as religious, and hence, is instantly dismissed as having an intellectual disconnect.

Random Observations pertaining to 9/11 by Malcolm Gladwell

Well, the hell with you, then.
I can criticize China's treatment of Tibet and nobody says I hate Chinese.
I could criticize South Africa's apartheid and nobody says I hate South Africans.
I criticize Israel for being a major reason why the Palestinians behave like they do, and now I'm a racist.
Fuck you.

Slow down there with your outrage.

When your first post stated:

I hate to say it, but there is no way in hell to discusss Palestinian terrorism without addressing the odious conditions that they are forced to live in by Israel.

You can't treat people like animals for three or four generations and expect them to behave in any other manner.

I AGREED with you stating:

Agreed, but you need to go one step further. There is no way in hell to discuss the plight of the Palestinian people without addressing the policies of the surrounding Arab nations for the last 4 generations as well.

I never denied that Israeli policy is a major reason Palestinians behave like they do, I agreed that was right. I just went on to say there was even more to it than just Israel's policies, to which you replied:

Yeah, they stole that land fair and square, right?

I called that remark EITHER ignorant or racist, not both. To simply accuse Israel of stealing land from the Palestinians requires ignorance of the regions history OR a willingness to ignore the details of history and flatly accuse Israel anyways which I consider to be racist.

Your main point on Israel policy at best antagonizing the situation is right and I agree on it, I just went a step further in pointing out there is much more blame to go around as well.

I have to give you credit for consistency, QM, your ignorance and apparent racism extend even to the boundaries of space.
You mean I'm not permitted to hate on a country whose tyrannical government promotes censorship, trial-free imprisonment, forced abortions, invasion of Tibet and harvesting prisoners' organs?
It's likely the Chy-knees rockets were built with tech stolen (or given) to them during the criminal Clinton years.
Only liberals hate Bush and waterboarding more than the evil empires.

Soo... What about the invasion of America? I mean honestly, lets look back at history, Native Americans got a raw deal, they just don't complain enough about it. You want to talk about trial-free imprisonment, is that anything like slavery or trial free interment camps? Censorship... Like firing librarians for not removing certain books from their shelves? I'm not trying to say that I agree with Chinese politics, I think there is a lot going wrong in that country, but I have faith that the Chinese people will be able to liberate themselves from it in the coming years. I just find it amusing that racists like you, like to hide behind some sense of patriotism. And don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good off color joke as much as the next person, which was why I was looking past your first comment about rice-o-nauts, but comments like this one, are just plain ignorant.
