What Not To Get Your Girlfriend For Xmas

lucky760 says...

The topic of bad girlfriend/wife presents always reminds me of the gift Homer bought Marge for her birthday. Do you remember that episode?

He gave her a bowling ball, which doesn't seem romantic at first, but he had it custom fit and engraved... It was sized to fit his hand and engraved "Homer".

How I Met Your Mother - Official Alternate Ending

Sarzy says...

I'm not sure if this is what you're saying (I might not be reading this correctly), but the ending they had from the start is the one where the mother dies, not this happy one. This was a backup ending that they filmed just in case they chickened out.

The problem with the real ending, for me, is twofold:

1) It didn't take into account how great Cristin Milioti was as the mother, and how much chemistry she had with Josh Radnor, which made her death an even bigger bummer. The original plan was going to be for us to only meet her very briefly, which would have made that ending sting a lot less.

2) I didn't take into account that the show was going to run for as long as it did. If the show had run for say, four or five seasons, the whole "Ted is still in love with Robin" thing would have seemed way less creepy and strung along. As it was, because the writers had to continually plant the seeds of Robin and Ted still being in love with each other throughout the show's nine years to make their ending still make sense, it made their relationship seem unhealthy and toxic. The finale comes off as weird and sad instead of romantic.

But yeah, I'll agree with everyone else that the last few seasons of the show were pretty weak. That fart of an ending was just the final insult.

The funny thing is that had they did this ending from the start. I would have thought something was missing. It's too perfect/happy. So I sorta understand why they did what they did originally. Still, like Yogi said, the show went on way too long. They never have the good sense to end it when it should and they keep dragging it out for money's sake for way too long until it sucks and we're sick of it.

Also what sucks is that we really don't get to know the mother much. Sure, getting to that point was great. but its still lackluster when they try to cram an entire relationship and a whole personality into one season.

Riders on the Storm

Had that once on a vessel I worked on, but it was side to side - and an engineer flew into an amazingly beautiful blond girl and landed on top of her with a tray of frozen fish. Was very romantic.

So hormones are love? You're such a romantic.

Also, just because you can't measure something, that means it doesn't exist? I suppose atoms didn't exist prior to the 20th century.

Have you watched True Detective? I pretty much tagged him for cringetastic romantic comedies until then.

I'm kinda sceptical. I love the premise, but I'm not a big fan of Mcconnaghey. Would rather not have a magic wormhole either.

Cadillac - Douchebag Ad

chingalera says...

Sure. Words have meaning and power. Hardly ever is the word used in it's proper context in recent vernacular or history though. People are being programmed to be stupider with each passing generation in their use and abuse of language. 'Just' is used nowadays as a filler word or as an excuse in defense of someone's inability or unwillingness to express honestly, anything at all. In it's adverb form ("Exactly, that's it!' or, 'the meaning being quite clear') or the adjective ('based upon or behaving according to what is morally right and fair'), the meaning is 'quite clear.'

Here for example, in Dag's comment (resounding best in one's mind when imagined in the voice of a 14-year-old teenaged girl from Beverly Hills), the word takes on a relatively banal and pointless connotation as well as reflecting in this case of a pompous air as well as a laziness of thought with little or no meaning, whatsoever.

Only folks that understand already and know Dag to lean towards the unrealistic, romantic, idealist camp with regard to the condition of the planet's coveted and rampantly abused resources and air-quality relative to climate, would 'get the jyst' as it were.

Love ya Dagmar, I simply can't stand the word 'just' being thrown about to satisfy one's ego or unbridled emotionalism. Stop buying plastic bullshit and driving, etc. etc., and don't cast a vote for empirical cunts and lovers of empire and their own if you're that passionate, or shut the fuck up about it already, hippie-boy

By the way, if you haven't guessed already, I own a POS used Cadillac, running great, lotta power, sexy-ish, plush and roomy inside, chicks and brothers dig my roll, but hard as fuck by design ("Fuck You, General Motors!") to find new parts for.

Two Excellent Examples Of How Gun Control Can And Does Work

shveddy says...

I really wouldn't be able to pick Piers Morgan out of a line up. I wrote that first comment over a year ago in the immediate aftermath of the Newtown shooting and it was largely a response to the rhetoric pro-gun advocates were displaying all over my Facebook feed.

What I wrote is not at all an over-reaction to what I saw during that time.

Totally normal and sane friends of mine applauded a ten year old girl who shot and killed a home invader, enthusing that this is how America should be.

Totally normal and sane friends of mine waxed romantic about how concealing and carrying a weapon transforms a vanilla suburban dining experience into a potential battlefield. Whereas most people get lost in one of the many flat screen TVs at an Applebees, they spend their time sizing up potential adversaries and keep close tabs on every exit as they feel the reassuring bulge of their Glock at their side.

I totally agree that most of these guys will never end up needing to use their weapons in an adversarial situation, and I totally agree that these guys are responsible gun owners if responsible gun ownership is defined by a safe stewardship of the guns you acquire, but that is not the point that I'm trying to make.

The problem is that these sorts of people and the gun culture they have created has an enormous impact on the type of gun laws we pass. This wouldn't be a problem if they were coming from a place that wasn't obsessive and wasn't paranoid and wasn't delusional, but they are and this is unfortunate because it enables and accentuates much of the violence you lament in inner city culture.

lantern53 said:

shveddy, dude I think you're over-reacting. Perhaps you've been watching too many Piers Morgan shows.

Yes, the US has a gun culture. The problem with guns is not that people are hoarding them, the problem is that too many people who own them have no respect for other people's lives...that's the black youth culture, which is born out by the number of them who lose their lives every day.

Gun collectors keep their firearms locked up 99% of the time. But to a black youth, a gun is a great equalizer to defend his machismo. It's in their music but there are too many cowards who refuse to address it.

Anti-Masturbation VS. Louis CK

KZubowski says...

.... WUT? @_@ Is this woman for real? She belongs on some extreme reveal-style television show. She's just an extremist with a pretty face. Filled with romantic words and smiling while judging and looking down on everyone, pretending she has some sacred truth, that people literally can't be HAPPY without her super awesome self butting in. It's really, really sad.
