The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer #1

I really wish that Guillermo Del Toro would have directed this instead of Peter Jackson. I really think he could have done a better job than PJ.

Nah. Del Toro is a good director, but not a great one. Peter Jackson is the right man for the job.

I'm liking that they put a song into the trailer and fit it to that. The scenery and armor/costuming looks amazing as I ever could have dreamed.

Things I wish were so:
- I really wish that Guillermo Del Toro would have directed this instead of Peter Jackson. I really think he could have done a better job than PJ.
- Mr. Tolkien himself gave up on trying to make a version of The Hobbit a LOTR prequel, so I hope they don't get bogged down in that too much and try to stay true to the original story.

does anyone else think peter jackson made a soggy mess out of LOTR?

Well, to be fair the source material is a bit soggy to start with. Don't get me wrong, I love the books, but they do have a lot of padding (Tom Bombadil, the battle of the Shire) that the movies wisely cut. Also the pacing in the movies is better. PJ was clever in moving the encounter with Shelob to the third movie as Sam and Frodo really don't have a lot do in book six.
As for the film version, it had moments of absolute brilliance. Theodren's speech before the battle of pellanor fields still gives me goosebumps. I watched Return of the King at an outdoor cinema and half the audience stood up and cheered at that scene.

yeah you're right. lots of singing too..
hard for any movie to live up to such colossal and subjective expectations. but fuck me sideways if staring into frodo's eyes for the gazillionth time wasn't somewhat suckingly annoying. ahh...i'm such a nitpicky dick

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Don't forget his Ron Jeremy phase in the mid-90s. I love this so much! *promote

He goes from looking like Francis Ford Coppola to Peter Jackson to Allen Ginsberg to a fat Kevin Dillon to a Star Wars era George Lucas

What I Am Legend would have looked like with non-CG monsters

IMO, the best (and most imaginative) practical effects / creature(s) are in John Carpenter's The Thing. Hands down. Rob Bottin really out did himself on that one.

@ Sagemind - WETA is a superior effects company. I find it amusing that Peter Jackson started out baking alien masks in his mum's kitchen oven. Which reminds me, another great prosthetic effects movie is Braindead (aka Dead Alive).
