District 9 Trailer 2

I assume it's a good thing that this doesn't appear to be attached to a major studio. Then I read that they are owned by Sony. So I don't know how big a release this will be. Normally you'd expect this to be set in the states and have some big names.

Peter Jackson isn't a big enough name for you? It feels more real to me that it is set in South Africa without the "big-name stars". I'm tired of seeing the same old movie plots with the same old actors...in the same old locations...

That's the thing - I wonder if this is going to be an uncompromised sci-fi gem without the usual Hollywood bollocks or if Jackson is there to ensure it's commercial enough. I hope he was there just to give it enough momentum to get it made.

Still I don't understand the fuss about Jackson. The LoTR films were enjoyable but I wouldn't want to see them again soon.

Let's hope that there's a cracking story to go with the visuals.

Sleep Dealer Trailer

I know you shouldn't bother with it if the story and characters are great, but I got so damn turned off by those bad CG animations that I don't think I could watch this without getting angry. =(
Must. Be. More. Tolerant. bangs head against the wall

Typical Hollywood sensibilities. Good Scifi has existed far longer than good CGI. Dr. Who, Metropolis, Tron, Videodrome, The BBC Hitchhiker's Guide, the original Star Wars, Time Bandits, Repo Man, Brazil... dare I throw out cult classic scifi shlep like Krull, Rocky Horror Picture Show, or the ingenius (though not scifi) pre-LotR Peter Jackson flicks? You're killin' me, Smalls.

District 9 Trailer (Based on the incredible Alive in Joburg)

Neil is from South Africa.

Neil and Peter Jackson were brought together for the now canned Halo film that fell apart when Microsoft got all draconian on the contractual matters of their most important Xbox IP.

This looks interesting. Revealing the aliens in the trailer is a let down.

yeah, sleeper dealer looks great too.

the documentary style of aij and district 9 just gives me really high hopes. i can't remember an 'invasion' film that's been shot like this. and with peter jackson behind it too. fuck.

if it sucks i will cry.

edit: just thought of cloverfield but that was just handheld, not really documentary.

Lord Of The Rings - Opening scene

notarobot says...

Though at times brilliant, I entered the theatre for the film, an avid reader of Tolkien, but leaving was in part disappointed for the ways Peter Jackson's interpretation diverged (increasingly for each of part of the trilogy) from the original work. I reconciled this in myself by accepting that these movies were not The Lord of The Rings but someone's homage to them.

Jackson's adaptation is not without flaw, but all in all, he did as well as anyone could.

bad taste is truly a wonderful example of exception amateur film making.
Made for (literally) no money, over several years. Peter Jackson shot this entirely on a single camera. Did all the make-up, special effects (which are low tech, but work). and even made all the replica guns himself.

On top of that, it's also suprisingly well directed.

I love bad taste, more than any of his other films until LOTR.
