Weird Al is a Grammar Troll

handmethekeysyou says...

It's funny, I am what Lynne Truss would call a stickler, what David Foster Wallace would call a SNOOT, and what most people I meet call a grammar nerd. The “less” in “15 items or less” does not really bother me. I understand that there are necessary evils in signage. However, your use in “less syllables” & “less letters” made me shudder.>> ^jwray:

"Less" has less syllables, has less letters, and gets the same point across while using less paper.

Obama Bows to Japanese Emperor Akihito

shuac says...

>> ^Rotty:
This really isn't news worthy; obammy has already demostrated that he's a diplomatic moron. What, no iPod for Akihito?
There are more relevant reasons to slam this Banker boy:
1) No immediate plans to leave Iraq. What happened to the nine month plan?
2) Additional deployments to Afghanastan; more dead Americans fighting the elite's wars.
3) Filling his admnistration with the same thugs that have consistently corrupted and looted America.
4) Other than banker bailouts, he hasn't done SHIT for the economy.
5) No changes in banking regulations that led to the last economic meltdown.
6) Other than creating a few thousnad jobs in his native state, he hasn't done SHIT in creating jobs.
As a matter of fact, other than touring the planet, he hasn't done a fucking thing.
The only CHANGE he's interested in is the change in your pocket.

If you cut out the diplomacy slam and all the childish name calling, I would have to agree with much of this fellow's post.

The bank bailout is a moot point because anyone in office would have bailed them out. Maybe not Ron Paul, but certainly McCain! After all, Bush bailed out Bear Sterns in Feb 2007 and McCain did whatever Bush did so...there you go.

I voted for Obama because he said he'd...

1) end the war,
2) go after those that committed war crimes (admittedly, Biden said this not Obama, but still)
3) not have any lobbyist on his cabinet (for the post of Deputy Secretary of Defense he nominated William J. Lynn III, the top lobbyist for Raytheon, one of the biggest companies in the military-industrial complex)
4) follow the rule of law. Meanwhile, the suspension of habeas corpus is still in effect for many "enemy combatants" and warrantless wiretaps at the NSA are still going like the energizer bunny.

He has done some good things. He at least tried to introduce a public healthcare option (it's unfortunately DOA on the Senate floor), he reversed some environmental policies, and, well, he's not Bush. But that's not really enough for me.

Downvote this comment if you like but everything I've pointed out is the truth.

Lawrence O'Donnell - The Disgrace That is The Cheneys

marinara says...

Is it just me or is Laurence O'Donnell just grandstanding? I couldn't care less if Obama attends a ceremony or not. I mean WTF has someone pissed in MSNBC cornflakes? They don't have enough news -they have to take Lynn Cheney to the woodhouse. In my book just ignoring Cheney is a big plus. Who cares what Cheney says? I would pay to tune that bitch out but now Countdown acts like Liz Cheney is at the center of the fucking universe. That and can they not give Sarah Palin 10 minutes every night I am so fucking tired of Palin, I mean I used to love Alaskan wilderness stuff, man, now It's like I don't even wanna Sarah Palin pop up anywhere. see Sarah Palin from my house GET OUTTA HERE.

upvote coz it gave me a chance to vent.

Rush Finally Faces Reality: A Real Black Man is POTUS

Drachen_Jager says...

"he never talks about "American exceptionalism"."

This is a standard line, Lynn Cheney said something similar about one of his trips to Europe so of course a few reporters did some digging and it turns out he did use that exact term in a speech in Paris. It's like these jerkoffs on the Right get a free pass when it comes to the truth, they just say whatever they think should be said and if it's wrong, who cares? They never get publicly corrected on it, certainly not at the time it happens.

This http://www.videosift.com/video/Reconstructing-a-famous-photograph-40-years-later is possibly my favourite. I've always loved the photo of Dylan and the kids in Liverpool (1966) and one day I was searching for it on google as I couldn't find it on my hard drive. One of the things that came up was this vid that I had never seen or heard of. Enjoy!

My PQ is rather small, but here's a gem: http://www.videosift.com/video/Travelling-Wilburys-Inside-Out . It's from the second Travelling Wilburys album (jokingly titled "Volume 3"). Super groups often fail, but when you've got George Harrison, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynne (Roy Orbison unfortunatly died right after the first album was released) it's gonna turn out great.

Dr. Richard Lynn, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland,

It is either from the 2002 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IQ_and_the_Wealth_of_Nations

President Obama: "I Screwed Up"

To a certain extent even the Iraq War: http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Politics/story?id=6354012&page=1

I'm going to respond a little out of order.

On the economic collapse (downturn?!), you'll note that what he said was, "I'm sorry it's happening...." That's like saying, "I'm sorry your dog died." Of course he's sorry, but that is not the same as taking responsibility or apologizing.

I saw neither an apology nor any acceptance of responsibility for the failures in intelligence gathering about Iraq and WMDs (in the link you provide or anywhere else). In particular, much of the intelligence that was fed to the public and Congress before the war was cherry picked and outright manipulated from within the White House. AFAIK, he's never even acknowledged this, much less taken responsibility for it.

The utter incompetence of the federal (and local) response to the devastation in New Orleans and the entire Gulf Coast after Katrina and Rita makes me almost too angry to respond. Suffice it to say that to this day, people are still fighting to get help that was promised. Completely insincere, and as such, not a real apology. (Even the words he uses in that clip are kind of weasely.)

On the prison abuse at Abu Ghraib. I might actually grant you this one. And I only asked for one verifiable quote. I was unaware that he had ever actually apologized to the people of Iraq, or specifically to the people that were abused and their families.
But again, it's somewhat insincere, because the very same practices were continued at Guantanamo for years after that. Another analogy - it's like saying to your neighbor, "I'm sorry my son beat up your son at school today," and then raping your other neighbor's wife later that night.

I can think of only one time when Bush ever came close to an admitting he was wrong and/or apologizing - the spy plane incident in China. Initially, he whipped out his dick for a pissing contest, risking an escalation of tensions to an unthinkable outcome. Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed (Rice and Powell), and we got our people and plane back. But generally speaking, despite any expressions of remorse, Bush never publicly admitted when he was wrong. And he essentially never changed his policies, no matter how wrong they were shown to be.

Don't get me wrong - I won't apologize for Obama. The appointment of Geitner to Treasury and Lynn to Defense are inexcusable. That Killefer and Daschle have been forced to step aside, though, shows a willingness to admit when he's wrong. That gives me some hope that when he does make more serious mistakes in the future (which he surely will), he will be willing to change direction if it's warranted. And if I read them right, I think that's the basic sentiment of many of the preceding comments.

Obama U-turns for Raytheon

jwray says...

It's one exception for one guy -- the incumbent #2 at the Pentagon -- not a U-turn. Obama put additional restrictions on Lynn's ability to make decisions involving Raytheon for the following year.
