Small-Scale Ant Genocide Yields Small-scale Alien Artifact

grinter says...

The description indicates that this is a "fire ant" colony. Although it's not certain, these are likely invasive 'fire ants'.
Setting aside for a moment the obvious argument that humans are also an invasive species, there are several reasons to kill invasives, and this was not a particularly nasty way to do it.

Now, he also casts carpenter ant colonies, which are likely indigenous to his area.. that, in my opinion, is weaker ethical footing.

When you consider Germany's infamous history with guns and the power used with them to manipulate their people's recent legacy it's not that "terribly" sad. Sad as it may be, Germany's pogroms of Jews rate higher on the WTF scale than the U.S.'s 'purging of the indigenous' genocide as far as shock value is concerned.

German's like the Japanese were kept in an international box after the second world war and their toys were put in a box as well that read, "Don't open till we say so."

Except for the Yakuza, Japan simply forgot they had a fucking toy box and but I believe you can hunt squirrels with a rifle if yer a good German these days...

19-year-old hopes to revolutionize nuclear power

chingalera says...

Well I'm humbled enough to admit that I know as much about nuclear energy production as a primary schoolboy. Extant history of large-scale operations leaves a foul taste for everyone, or should. How many European countries ditched the idea of ever using nuclear energy? How many phaseouts planned?

Out with the old if it's not a potential ELE (extinction level enterprise).

LD just made the scariest prediction considered all morning and begs the question, "Does the planet really need China playing around with tinker-toy nuke power plants considering their track-record for building ginormous engineering disasters?" They may have a 1000-year-plan for empire but their characteristic program of increase as their world economic status grows seems a, 'many trials, many errors' approach.

That their success in economic influence has been accomplished through producing sub-standard plastic bullshit consumer products, sub-standard textiles, etc. with indigenous slave-labor to sell the bullshit to robotic consumers like U.S., Mexico, (insert non-Asian nations here) while cornering the market on raw materials for their machine should be of preeminent concern beyond that of how humans will get the power they need to continue turning the planet into something ugly.

Look at what they accomplished in space just the other day with their launching of that satellite-grabber. Here's another new level of paranoia I can agree with;
"In March 2013, a new law that "prohibits anyone from China setting foot in a NASA building" was passed."(wiki)

China in space
What a frightening concept.

It's a shame that fukushima has tainted the idea of safe, clean nuclear power. There are some really cool, safe modern designs out there that create orders of magnitude less waste, can't melt down and of course produce no carbon emissions. But they are just not politically viable in most western countries. This is probably another area that China will dominate in the future.

Georgia Sheriffs Draw Blood for ALL DUIs Without Consent

chingalera says...

I'd take the suspension on principle, and drive without a license for a year on the same principle.

Here's the real: More fatal accidents occur in the U.S. now due primarily to distracted drivers and speeding. I would appreciate a scale of punishment befitting the crime committed based on the frequency and resulting loss-i.e., a distracted motorist causing an accident gets a harder hand-slap for using a cell phone than he/she would for drinking 3 shots of bourbon. and goin' to the store for a six-pack after.

A sobriety test should be quick and painless:
Smell breath-Been drinking
initiate breathalyzer-legally drunk

License suspended for a year, and if caught driving under suspension, complete loss of driving privileges for 2 years.
Caught under suspension after 2 years suspension, 5 years suspension and 180 days of supervised, community service on a dirty state highway during the middle of the summer, rounding-up garbage and carcass.

If a drunk under suspension kills or injures anyone while driving, 5 years on a chain gang whose job it is to walk the entire length of State highway 8-hours-a-day for the duration of their sentences, picking up trash and planting marijuana and indigenous flowering perennials.

Make a spectacle of a repeated drunk offender if there is no rehabilitating him. More so with text-drivers, that shits worse than crack and invariably more dangerous than drunks, who are primarily on the roadways when most peeps are ASLEEEEEP!

Islamophobia

SDGundamX says...

Ask and you shall receive!

You said: "They have no intention of integrating into the society or the laws/practices of the host country."

That right there, sir, is what we call an opinion--by definition not a fact. You have condemned the entire Muslim population of Britain as not wanting to integrate based on the fact that Sharia courts exist. And that, good sir, is what we call "irrational." As in, it doesn't at all reasonably follow from the previously stated fact. Perhaps indeed the entire Muslim community doesn't intend to integrate into British society (doubtful), but the fact you cited doesn't support that claim in any way.

Next, you state: "A birth rate outstripping that of the indigenous populace of countries they have "settled" by so much, that it is estimated the whole of Europe will be muslim in 50-75 years."

Sorry, good sir, that's not a fact--it's a thoroughly well-debunked lie. See: http://blogs.reuters.com/faithworld/2011/01/27/will-pew-muslim-birth-rate-study-finally-silence-the-eurabia-claim/

You go on to say: "As for "moderate" muslims; when was the last time they marched en-masse to denounce the barbaric practices carried out in their name?"

Muslims regularly protest the atrocities that are carried out in Islam's name--it just doesn't ever make the evening news (after all, they're supposed to be the bad guys!). This website will give you more than ample examples of Muslims protesting the atrocities committed in the name of Islam.

http://www.muhajabah.com/otherscondemn.php

So, is Islam to be feared? Perhaps. Not for any of the reasons you stated, though. And I hope you don't feel like I'm picking on you--again, I agree with the video that you're entitled to your opinion. I would just hope you base your opinion on fact and reason and not hearsay and emotion.

A10anis said:

It is intellectual laziness to simply dismiss a premise as "irrational" without backing up objections to it with facts (the religious, do it all the time). Please, go through the points in my original comment and explain one, or any, that could be construed as irrational. I can assure you, you will find not a single one that is not backed up by facts.

Islamophobia

A10anis says...

48 - and counting - sharia courts in the UK, and muslims recently given the right to conduct their own divorces. They have no intention of integrating into the society or the laws/practices of the host country. A birth rate outstripping that of the indigenous populace of countries they have "settled" by so much, that it is estimated the whole of Europe will be muslim in 50-75 years (Gaddafi himself said; "All we have to do is wait"). Islam is not simply a religion, it is a theocracy, and its followers are intent on inflicting its medieval practices on the world. As for "moderate" muslims; when was the last time they marched en-masse to denounce the barbaric practices carried out in their name? Is islam something to fear? Damn right it is.Christopher Hitchens said, many times, that if we don't wake up soon, it will be too late.

Leopards are Confused by a Mirror in the Forest

Trancecoach says...

I wonder if the leopards' (or other animals', for that matter) reactions to the mirrors will change if mirrors become a more regular part of the scenery. Indigenous peoples have different reactions to mirrors than modern humans. And children pass through a developmental phase by which the reflection in the mirror is recognized as "me" or "not me."

Possible New Species of Spider Builds Decoys of Itself

unbsd says...

How about "Golem Spider" because it makes a Golem. Golems are endemic to D&D folklore and secular literature as well as Jewish folklore. Golems are made of mud and debris and they are animated by a magician. It seems a fitting metaphor.

Perhaps there's a similar creature in indigenous amazon folklore to the Golem and if so, I submit that as an alternate name too.

I'd like to know how many webs had 8 legged constructs and if that's the sole instance, I'd go with your fungus theory. I figure you scientifically ruled out it was the exoskeleton of a dead spider.

Why do you call it a 'he'? Did you sex it? Do only females of this species create webs?

GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER GOLEM SPIDER.

Here's a naming suggestion: Google/Image Search each of the proposed spider names come up and see what kinds of associations (other than to what presently seems to be called 'the decoy spider') already exist.

First of all, they'll never get them all so so they won't really be destroying them. If they do get them all, however unlikely, then they would just be culling them back to their country of origin.
By not getting rid of them, it would be like consciously choosing to kill off all other indigenous animals. With no natural predators, these snakes throw the balance out and will only be stopped once the food supply runs out at which point, they'll migrate as far as they are able, further killing off local wildlife. The next logical food source for them would be pets and humans.

NASA: 130 Years of Global Warming in 30 seconds

chingalera says...

Let's not get too overwrought here. At issue, one planet's climate/resources relative to the mammal(s) utilization and experience of the same and their viability on her surface. Only one species have brains large enough to postulate, process, and influence directly a variety of scenarios. The indigenous species with teensier brains on the surface of this ball have for centuries adapted to changes dealt from off-world or on. Some are no longer here. We may or may not be here in our present state regardless of, or due directly to alterations in a variety of scenarios. No-thing is sustainable indefinitely. This planet's human resources are finite as well. Fewer and fewer of them every day. Sad really, when we all die off the next wave will have to start with some toxic scratch!

i'm sorry but if you can't see the difference between racism coming from white people and racism coming from black or indigenous people then you need a lot more education. probably in the fields of history and psychology.

I don't really think there is a difference. I had nothing to do with black slaves or the exploitation of an indigenous population, and nor did my parents. Or their parents. Sins of our of great great grandfathers? This guy is no more justified in attacking the colour of my skin than a Klansman or a Nazi.

Still, this is a drunk throwing insults at strangers. Its not exactly a lynching by men in white capes. I'm not sure what QMs point here is. That we view racism differently coming from a Black guy than from a White guy? I think we all know and understand why that is.
Oh, and shame on the automatic downvotes.

I was ready to argue with you--then I read the second paragraph--then I read the late addition. You are assuming the downvotes are automatic; using what? You don't know why anyone downvoted (except me--see comment above).

I'd like to know what your argument against the first paragraph that my second then negated.

Automatic was the wrong word, it was not my intention to imply the downvotes were baseless, or purely based on that fact its QM. Influenced perhaps, but then thats as much his fault for making tactless (at best) video descriptions. Regardless, you needn't justify your prerogative to downvote to me.

I didn't upvote the video because I did not find it entertaining or illuminating in any way. The comments are somewhat more interesting and made me wonder if the video was quite so pointless afterall.
