Is It Dangerous To Talk To A Camera While Driving?

MilkmanDan says...

Was just watching the old Mythbusters where they took an actual driving road test while intoxicated or talking on a cell phone. But, being actual driving, they legally had to stay under the .08 BAC limit even though it was on a closed course.

Really cool to see this place, where they can test things at mild/moderate/high levels of impairment, other types of intoxication, etc.

However, I did have one minor complaint, sort of the same as in the Mythbusters episode: it would be nice to see additional tests where the driver isn't ever expected to look at a video camera and/or respond correctly to questions. Ie., what if you're talking to somebody on the phone hands free, or talking to a passenger in the car, but you're not expected to devote a lot of attention to that ALL the time. In a real scenario, you can keep your eyes on the road and pay attention to driving while also listening to someone or even talking to them a little bit. If you see something in the road that requires your full attention, it seems like your brain should be able to do a reasonable job of prioritizing the driving (more important) over paying attention to the conversation (less important).

I'd wager that on average, people in that sort of scenario are slightly impaired compared to drivers putting 100% of their attention on driving, but not by a big margin. Probably lower than a lot of other distractions, some of which we deem acceptable (hard to legislate things like "driving while preoccupied" angry/sad/whatever).

The Importance of CPR

Lawdeedaw says...

Actually, hands free cpr is now taught. Not rescue breath. You are right about the rest.

good message but it was all wrong. In children you start with a rescue breath and then chest compressions. The compressions shown here were too slow and no where near deep enough to generate circulation and it's not useful to give such a gentle image as it might stop people giving proper compressions in future.

In reality it's vigorous and its not unusual to get rib fractures as a result.

Finally, a hands free tomato feeding device that works while jogging. How did civilization get along before now? I'm so glad that smart people are working hard on the big problems.

Left hand free

I expected this to be instructional on how to ride a long horn. I was taught to keep your left hand free when riding (horses) to carry your beer in.

Color Blind Artist hears Colors

Jinx says...

Seems to be you can't really add senses without infringing upon our already existing ones. In his case he uses some of his hearing "bandwidth" to perceive colour. Maybe one day we'll be able to wire in completely new senses, but I don't imagine that will be soon.

Tbh, I consider us all to be psuedo-cyborgs because of our phone apps not in spite of them. We are all almost always connected with a wealth of utilities at our finger tips, some of which you could say broaden our senses. Do we need to implant microchips in our brain when carrying a device that fits in your hand is just that much more convenient - and you can opt out at any time. I think we are heading to headsupdisplays and truly hands-free interfacing. Does that make it more of a part of us than it is already? I'm not so sure tbh. Whats the advantage of putting it under your skin when it'll still be piggybacking off existing senses?

Anyway, transhumanism is fascinating. I hope we survive long enough.

A Really Dumb Invention??

Dumb invention?
Actually, a great way to get around the 'hands-free' law while driving.

I have a blue-tooth, hands-free device, but it takes more effort to use while driving than just using the phone (the regular way) and takes may attention away from driving more so than just that phone by itself..

I plug my phone into the audio jack of my car - works great.

Dayumm 'Merika, you scary!

The underboob one is good for conceal (if you're well endowed) but terribly impractical for quickdraw, especially if in a close encounter; it's three arm movements for the drawing arm, and one for the other (and thus assumes you have both hands free), giving ample time for counteraction and making it very likely you'll be the one getting shot, not your aggressor. Worse, while an accidental discharge from a side-carried will probably injure your leg, with this you're risking a mortal wound to the chest or abdomen.

Frankly, I don't know how one can live peacefully with the thought that any of the (often unsavoury) people one crosses might be packing a death-dealing machine. *shivers*

Cee Lo's Fuck You in Sign Language, SO Cool!

Sagemind says...

Yes, I learned a different sign for "That word" as well. And I agree with the one handed thing.
Another term used for one handed sign is lazy-sign (slang) - though it's completely valid.

Among the deaf people I know, they never use two hands, especially if you are doing something at the time, like driving a car (can't be hands-free when you're deaf.)

Yes, proper sign uses two hands in a lot of cases but when do we ever speak proper English? (It's just not practical)

As for the grammar, if you translated sign back into English, it would sound childish as only the key words are used to communicate something. like "We go town" instead of "We are going to go down town." Sign is best translated as explained rather than direct-translated.

This is fun though, My niece used to stand up at school events and translate them into sign (unrehearsed). Mainly she did this so her dad could come to events and feel part of the event. People with hearing impairments miss out on a lot of the regular stuff we take for granted, like common-banter when hanging out with us hearing folk. After being around them for so long you start to forget they're deaf, especially if they can read lips. Never forget to stop and explain what is going on once in a while...

Cell Phones (Blog Entry by jwray)

jwray says...

One day there will be a device the size of a hearing aid, controlled by thinking, which works as a computer headset, hands-free cell phone, mp3 player, and digital radio, all in one.

They managed to control the new iPod shuffle with only 1 button, plus 2 for volume. Distinguishing between 3-4 different signals in a brain-computer interface is already old technology.

Treecutter Gets Stuck In Tree, Pants Fall Down

newtboy says...

I call FAKE. If his pants really fell down by accident, why didn't he pull them up as soon as he was on the ladder and had his hands free, or at the least when he got on the ground. Notice it's the fireman that pulls his pants up, long after he touches down (he's apparently busy playing with his wiener). This guy just wanted to show off his undies.
Also note, his underwear is lower after he is off the ladder, as if he mooned the fireman for their help.
