Islam: A black hole of progress.

Yogi says...

>> ^Deano:

I was never convinced by that or the contribution of any religion.
Here's a quote from a very good article (which covers Christianity as well) "Myth of Islamic Contribution to Human Civilization" by Muhammed A. Hussain.
"Thus, the Islamic Golden Age is a time, which was characterized by the development of a rather anti-Islamic Mutazili theology, inspired by the rational reasoning and freethinking of the pre-Christianity Greek Rationalism. And those Muslims scholars, who enriched science, mathematics, medicine, philosophy and rational thinking - the defining elements of the Islamic Golden Age, belonged to the un-Islamic Mutazili school, unlike contemporary Sunni Islamic scholars, such as al-Bukhari, Abu Daud and Imam Ghazali et al., of the true Islamic school. Given these facts, it is totally untenable and silly to claim that the golden era of progress and prosperity of Islamic world was ever positively influenced by Islam but instead, it was made possible because true Islamic ideology took the back seat during that era."

What about the history of Islam? All the scientists and developments that came from it?
What's the video's author suggesting that we eliminate a religion because it's not producing enough science?
I upvoted so that people can see this video...and hopefully take away from it that it doesn't matter if you're smart or if you're stupid...you can still be really dumb and prejudiced.

So you've got one paper...good for you.

Look this is just racism plain and simple...it's just nicer than QMs form of racism. Put a nice face on it...Liberal commentators during the cold war were explaining why the Russians say "No" all the time at the UN. They came to the conclusion with the support of psychiatrists that it was because Russian mothers dress their babies in swaddling clothes that doesn't allow them to move. This was an academically supported reason for why they wouldn't cooperate at the UN supported by experts. So when I see stuff like this...it's just obvious bullshit and furthermore it doesn't mean a goddamn thing to me. You're just trying to say one thing by hiding behind another...ok but it's not that hard to see through.

i hate the term history buff...

it makes it sound negative to actually want to know what has gone on before our time, to give us more insight as to where we are and where we are going

those who don't learn from the past are doomed to repeat it as the saying goes

yeah, Regan was the "golden age" to alot of conservatives... funny though because alot of what he accomplished wasn't really conservative

but i'd say the downfall of both parties is closer to the era after JFK than Regan, though bankers were corrupting the system since Eisenhower

For the youngest country in the world, you sure are pretty bound in traditions. You'd think as the new kid on the block, you would want to stay hip and fresh.

I agree, though based on what I've read of history, the ascendancy of this backward-looking traditionalism appears to be a recent phenomenon. Most people used to believe in progress, and seemed to favor the new over the old, and there seemed to be a fairly long-lasting tradition of being opposed to traditionalist arguments.

I'm tempted to say that somewhere between 1964 and 1980 is when the country really started behaving as if the only way forward was to try to reclaim some mythical lost golden age of the past.

Ironically, the US is looking more and more like old-school China, isolating itself from the world, looking down its nose at everyone else, stubbornly only using its own measurement systems, avoiding globalization at all costs - this will be your ultimate economic undoing if the trend continues.

Not just our economic undoing, but our political, social, and cultural undoing as well. There's no turning the clock back. For better or worse, the entire world is now more interconnected than it's ever been before, and getting even more connected at an ever increasing rate.

To the degree that "American exceptionalism" was ever real, it was derived from our ability to adapt and change to meet new challenges, not because we were founded in perfection and have effectively resisted change over the last couple hundred years.

Alabama Tea Partier Ad: "Gather Your Armies"

kronosposeidon says...

@blankfist, Barber cites the tea tax - an excise tax - as an injustice comparable to the income tax, and just as worthy of rebellion, yet the Whiskey Rebellion was also about an excise tax. So if he wants to trot out the tea tax, then he might as well know that the very same Founding Ghost Father at the table who said, "Gather your armies" had no problem with excise taxes, nor squashing any tax rebellions. Whether he is or isn't your favorite Founding Father is besides the point. These assholes are elevating all the Founding Fathers to demigod status, so let the truth about these giants from a long-forgotten golden age be told.

And personally I'd prefer wiener rubs with Alexander Hamilton. He was such a bad boy!

I never thought I'd say this, but I'm proud to have been a fan during the Golden Age of the WWF. It will never get any better than 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Randy 'Macho Man' Savage, The Iron Sheik, George the Animal Steele, Jimmy 'Mouth of the South' Hart, Mean Gene Oakerland and others.

They were defo legends, a little past my time, so maybe you'll accuse me of being too young, but......

Two words:

The Rock.

Nothing in the genre i have ever seen has come close to this man's ability to entertain me - and that's just through talking alone! I've never heard a crowd so mesmerised, so enchanted by a wrestler. He OWNS the crowd! THEY ARE CHANTING THE ROCK'S NAME!

Jennifer Love Hewitt Bedazzled her Vagina

Wow. Vajazzled. Probably a word that I didn't need to know.
In the "rise and fall of western civilization" - we're on the fall side.

Clearly you don't understand what civilization is for. Back in the day, beautiful women that wanted to enchance their looks had to slave for hours to heat buckets of water on wooden stoves just to wash their hair.

Now they can bejewel their vaginas. It's a golden age, I'm telling you.

My only question is why the paparazzi have failed to bring us photographic evidence to support her story.
