Christians against Easter

HadouKen24 says...

There really isn't any educational value in this film, aside from the correct claim that the church instituted holidays around the time of pagan holidays. (Which doesn't at all mean that the holidays remained pagan; they kept the trappings, but changed the substance.)

Easter has nothing to do with Ishtar. The name of the goddess of Easter was Eostre. It's probable that Eostre was the goddess of the sunrise, like the Roman Aurora; her name seems to be cognate with, e.g., the Greek goddess of the dawn Eos.

His explanation of the meaning of Easter is based on the Wiccan celebration of Ostara. (Ostara is a possible Germanization of Eostre, though the name is not to my knowledge found in any extant ancient or medieval texts.) Wiccan practices are not the same as those of ancient paganism. Wiccan rites borrow heavily from Ceremonial Magick (Aleister Crowley, Israel Regardie, and the like). That said, there are modern pagans who have revived the ancient holiday of Eostre to the best of their ability.

Plus the others they said. Such a dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb, dumb PSA. I hope the people that made this are attacked by the (most assuredly) displaced insects that eat cannabis, since from watching this video they will be unstoppable lunatic killing machines till they get their fix* back. DEATH TO THE UP-ROOTERS!

*Warning: "Fixes" caused by delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol may in fact be nearly harmless usually causing short-term memory problems and short-term comprehension and perception changes in humans and provide a delicous meal for insects.

Was Jesus just another sun god

>> ^HadouKen24:
There are some serious factual errors in the video.
The only god it references which was thought to be born on December 25th was Mithras.
Almost none of them had 12 disciples. None of them were buried for "three days" after their death. (Dionysus, for instance, took several months to be reborn--since he was a transplanted fetus. But he never really "died;" being the son of Zeus, he was immortal.)
There are a lot of dying and resurrecting gods--and goddesses--but few have that many details in common with Jesus or with each other.
That said, in the context of world religion and myth, Jesus' story is nonetheless still pretty unremarkable.

None of them were buried for "three days"? I stopped the video the first time this claim was made, and arrived at Mithra. Here is a source stating that Mithra was raised after 3 days: http://freethoughtpedia.com/wiki/Jesus_and_Mithra

It's Time for Science and Reason

HadouKen24 says...

>> ^gwiz665: No, it is true. All religion leads you down a path of ignorance, apathy, and malice. It's what religion is: faith, surrendering yourself to God's will, and converting people to your flock.

No, it's not. That's what Christianity and Islam are about.

"Faith" is essential to religions that are about orthdoxy, or having the right beliefs. Some religions are defined not by having particular beliefs, but by orthopraxy, performing the right practices and rituals. All you have to do to be a member of a heavily orthopraxic religion is take part in the rituals and ceremonies, and keep to the ethical maxims. To be Wiccan, all you need to do is keep your actions closely in line with the Wiccan Rede ("harm none," roughly) and take part in properly administered initiation ceremonies. To be Confucian, all you need to do is practice filial piety and perform the rituals honoring the ancestors.

"Surrendering" oneself to the Divine will is not a part of many religions. In Roman religion, it was quite common for people to attempt just the opposite--try to persuade a god or goddess to follow their own will. The ritual sacrifices were seen as a sort of economic exchange, regular offerings in exchange for helping protect the state. In many forms of Hinduism, "God" is an impersonal force of which all reality is a manifestation. Literally nothing can happen contrary to God's will, so "surrender to God's will" is a meaningless phrase. The existence or lack of existence of any gods is irrelevant to the teachings of Buddha, and calling meditation to seek enlightenment "surrender" is highly misleading.

Converting people to the flock, too, is not a goal of many religions. On religioustolerance.org's list of 12 "world religions," I counted 6 that have never put an emphasis on converting people, and at least 2 that once did, but no longer make it a priority.

>> His biggest act of asshat-ery, though, was when during a legal battle over the existence of the cross on Mt. Soledad, he sneakily booked the site for Easter morning, even though (well, because) a church group had held Easter morning services there every year. So that he could hold a pagan ceremony there instead. Basically, though, just to be a dick.

You do realize that Easter (and "Christmas") is and has been a pagan holiday long before Christianity was invented. Rabbits laying eggs, decorated trees on December 25th, hmm, I wonder where that came from?

The Babylonian goddess of fertility, love and war, Ishtar (which is pronounced "Easter"), descended from heaven in a giant egg, landed in the Euphrates river at sunrise on the first Sunday after the vernal equinox, and turned a bird into an egg laying rabbit. The priests would then sacrifice infants, take the eggs and die them in the blood of the sacrificed infants. Ishtar became impregnated by the rays of the sun-god Baal and gave birth to her son, Tammuz, on the 25th of December.

Tammuz was killed, resurrected and descended into the sky to be with is father. When he died, some of his blood fell on the stump of an evergreen tree and the stump grew into a full new tree overnight.

If you don't believe me, here's what christiananswers.net says about Easter:

The name “Easter” has its roots in ancient polytheistic religions (paganism). On this, all scholars agree. This name is never used in the original Scriptures, nor is it ever associated biblically with the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. For these reasons, we prefer to use the term "Resurrection Sunday" rather than "Easter" when referring to the annual Christian remembrance of Christ's resurrection.
...
“Easter” is simply one of the names of a woman who mightily deceived the world and whose religion has caused untold suffering and misery. She was clearly an enemy of Christianity, and her son Tammuz was an anti-Christ, a false messiah that ultimately deceived millions.

Much like the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, these people had replaced conventional religion with an atheistic-only-in-name substitute -- they called themselves the "Cult of Reason" for crying out loud. They worshiped the "Goddess of Reason" and they had "Temples of Reason". They don't sound very "reasonable" to me.
