1/3 of Pakistan underwater, no one knows, no one cares

When the Haiti quake happened, there were postings on the best ways to give money. Are there similar things about giving money to Pakistan?

Few things. First pakistan doesn't care, second, they've repeatedly refused help(especially from those "evil" jew and christian aid groups). Third, they have a taxation rate of 4% of the total population, and refuse to tax anyone in order to save themselves.

I work as an editor and I have so many discussions about stuff like this with my boss. It was totally the fact that I nerd over language in this manner which gave me a rager, and nothing else.
Furthermore, I love that before I edited it I actually wrote "I work as a editor".

"Will edit for fud."

Obama: 'Vitriol' Against Me A Product Of The Economy

marinara says...

>> ^kronosposeidon:

I think the "vitriol" problem is worse than Obama imagines. If he were here in Wyoming he might understand what I'm talking about. A LARGE percentage of Americans hate him, and always will. Even if unemployment drops to historic lows and health care improves for Americans, he will always be hated by the conservative base, the same one that approved of George Bush's performance, no matter how awful he was.
It's sad but true.

Yeah, Republicans had to play the FUD card. Well they had to because they are bad people.

Home Taping is Killing Music

raverman says...

The rich corporations make up a horror story about how the world will be without music if you stop them making profits. Film companies did it about vhs, music companies did it about both tapes and mp3s. Insurance companies do it about public health option... and media parrot the story.

It's all just FUD from people afraid to lose profits.

Google: trying very hard not to be evil

Stormsinger says...

If Google wanted to own your phone, they wouldn't be pushing so hard to open the phones and networks. They may be (okay, they are) fanatics on some subjects, but there is no evidence of the huge conspiracy that this video is trying to suggest.

The crappy reporting here definitely smells of astroturfed FUD.

Google's recent activity is worrying. Maybe I should be alarmed by them, but I'm not. Probably because Google is built on a core of innovation instead of copycatting and lawsuits. If Microsoft was a person (and I guess it is, according to the SCOTUS) then I would say it suffers from poor self-esteem. There must be a recognition of that within the company- that they have little innovation to be proud of - and that's what drives their company ethos. Oh and this of course.>> ^Croccydile:

I'm more worried about Google to be honest. They're starting to control too much information, spreading into every sector. They just launched a social network, will launch their own phone as well as operating system and so on... Not that M$ doesn't suck, but then again most corporations are evil. Yes, Apple too.

This is only one small company, but that is even beyond Microsoft to not only buy them, but remove the product. At least when Microsoft bought Visio they kept selling it!

I understand your concerns given Microsofts history, but at the same time you cite copycatting when you point to DR-DOS... which was well after the fact. Really that was just poor Gary Kildall trying to recoup the old glory that was CP/M since nobody else was using it by that point.

"IBM originally approached Digital Research, seeking an x86 version of CP/M. However, there were disagreements over the contract, and IBM withdrew. Instead, a deal was struck with Microsoft, who purchased another operating system, 86-DOS, from Seattle Computer Products."

Sorry Gary, you had the chance for what was the deal of the century and lost it to Microsoft who saw someone had already made a clone of CP/M, bought it, spruced it up, licensed it to IBM and made billions off a $50,000 investment. Are we really supposed to feel that bad for those who missed that boat in the 80s? Imagine how pissed the dude who sold 86-DOS must be right now.

(Sorry, just nitpicking because even though MS has been a copycat at times... you gave probably the worst example Don't worry we still love you. I would hardly say Microsoft is lacking innovation as well with all of the side projects they have been churning out lately. But I digress I am the Microsoft apologist since they are an easy target I feel the need to make a counterpoint)

No, I'm saying that Microsoft lies about competitors products to prop up a bloated Office suite that should should have died in the last century- thereby stifling innovation and perpetuating and supporting a soulless, carpeted cube wall, corporate drone culture.

>> ^campionidelmondo:
Wha? You're saying corporations advertise their products to be better than their competitors', and sometimes thats not completely true?? Stop the presses!

This isn't an MS vs. Apple thing but- the MS video is giving corporate managers bullet points on why they shouldn't switch away from MS Office. Some of them completely untrue.

Newswipe - How we all became Richard Nixon

raverman says...

The happiest people i know don't watch TV, and don't read the news.

All news is FUD. Fear Uncertainty and Doubt. We have to watch hour after hour of suffering in Haiti so we can be sympathetic. But why? Why do we have to watch their suffering? Who does it help?

All entertainment is about watching one train wreck after another. It's all about the fail, we want to see the losers lose - that's what makes it fun.

It's pretty hard to be positive if you're brain is always soaking up the negative.

Sarah Palin Book Signing - Meet The Fans

longde says...

When has Palin actually limited the size and scope of government? When she supported the "bridge to nowhere" ($398 MILLION in federal funds that she didn't return when the project was eventually cancelled)? When she ran up her state's travel expense accounts on her and her family for non-business? When she abused her powers to get her ex-brother in law sacked? Yeah, that's a real small government conservative.

For you to choose to vote for someone who is obviously incompetent over someone whose politics you merely differ with is crazy. I've voted for 3rd party candidates before; at least go that route.

I shiver at the thought of Palin in a meeting with Hu Jintao, Medvedev or Netanyahoo. She'd get eaten alive. She can't even handle Katie Couric.

Either you haven't thought it through or you are crazy.

Sigh... Palin is not a neo-con. Neo-cons are big government conservatives. Palin is a small government conservative. That's why she's so popular - most Republicans had to hold their noses to vote for GWB the second time and many rejected McCain, because they were both for the massive expansion of government. See for example Spendulus I. Obama continued the trend with Spendulus II.
Conservatives are (rightly) asking where all the money for the Spendulus bills will come from, and the Republican Party is providing no leadership in opposing the expansion of government - the party is nearly rudderless. Even though Palin wouldn't be my ideal candidate for president, I'd vote for most any candidate that was for limiting the size of government. Last year I voted Libertarian (Bob Barr), for example. If Palin ran against Obama, I'd vote for her.
All the liberal FUD aside, her stances on the issues are actually quite thoughtful and reasonable. I've followed her notes on Facebook from time to time:

Sanchez Destroys Scott Of Conservatives for Patients Rights

RedSky says...

Very good interview. For what it's worth although he did delibarately avoid answering some questions, I thought he had reasonable claims, assuming they were true, to back up his position if in fact his chain of hospitals did statically have some of the lowest costs and the highest levels of patient satisfaction.

Although I am very skepital of this, since as Sanchez correctly pointed out, the strategy when it comes to operating private hospitals in the US does typically involve killing off competitors in a region and thus removing the incentive to innovate, keep prices low and keep patient satisfaction high. There is no doubt that more stringent anti-trust regulation is needed in this area. Given that, this certainly wasn't on the same level as the guy who got owned on Hardball for not knowing what appeasement was in a historical context.

Although of course some of what he said, and really his main message was clear FUD: that public systems are inherently bad, that government operated system are inherently bad and that taxes going up is the main issue.
