New "Geminoid X" android, are we out of the uncanny valley?

Still in the valley - but I for one- think the land is starting to slant upwards.

I shudder to think about getting head from an sex-droid. What if there's a glitch and it decides to chomp down with its metal jaw? What if it shorts out, ergo causing me to short out?

That's why we design them with nerf teeth.

PC Magazine Apple iPad Video Review

Psychologic says...

^ Supposedly Google is designing a netbook based on Android with a touchscreen, accelerometer, etc. I'm not sure whether they're actively designing it or just setting minimum design requirements. It would still be a netbook, but maybe it will open 180 degrees or flip around into a tablet like the Lenovo ones.

We're just getting to the point where tablets are feasible from a hardware standpoint, and I salute Apple for pushing the tech forward (despite the intentional limitations). Over the next few years we should see multiple versions from different vendors, along with increasing power and longer battery life.

My personal ideal computer would be something the size of a Droid/iPhone with similar interactivity, but with the ability to sync with a wireless mouse/keyboard/whatever and full-size external display... and of course enough horsepower to use any operating system comfortably. That might be 10 years away though. =)

The iPad. Still sucks. I can see Jobs having another purpose for it besides it just being a large iPod Touch, and I'm thinking that would (or should!) involve tv and movies. I would hope he's thinking of something more than what it currently will be. Otherwise it will fall into the land of misfit toys like the Apple TV, the powermac g4 cube, Apple's weird iMac "hockey puck" mouse and the Newton.

Either way, if it fails it won't hurt the company. Apple has created a fantastic array of tech toys and computers. My Mac Pro Tower is awesomely fast! The MacBook Air is great for typing while I shit, which I'm doing at the moment. And you're welcome for the image.

I own a Droid and my gf owns an iPhone. I still like aspects of the iPhone's usability and interface better. I wouldn't want an iPhone, though. I like my Droid, and it has things that I like that Apple's Iphone doesn't have. I can literally press a button, say "map to tacos" and have the first Google searched result come back as a map that I can then send right into their built in GPS! That's brilliant! Also it makes phone calls. Okay, time to wipe.

Drug Rehab

I hope this is a paid ad placement, and not just a self-promotion. At least that way, the Sift would see some profit out of it.

I dunno if it's even theoretically possible to fit more pop-psychology buzzwords in this ad.

I had a whole slew of criticisms, but they're not really valid for such a short commercial. I suspect my dislike of the commercial is driven primarily by the new-age/marketing-droid feeling it left in my mouth. Well, that and the fact that I've seen -very- few successes come out of these for-profit treatment centers. Not many from the nonprofit side either, for that matter...it's almost like addicts can't be cured until they're ready, and once they're ready, any program works.

Someday, perhaps we'll understand brain chemistry well enough to actually fix it. But that day isn't today.

TED: Augmented reality using Bing maps

AmateurD says...

When I saw their TED tech demo for PhotoSynth 3 years ago, my jaw hit the floor. Never did I imagine it would be implemented like this. This took the awe I had the first time around, and multiplied it by 10. I literally could not stop saying OH MY GOD out loud when I saw they had live video syncing with the already impressive still image gallery.

I love Google Maps. I own a Droid. But if this hits mainstream, Bing Maps would quickly become the new king. This could put Bing close to even footing to Google as a search engine. That's how impressive this is.

Mobile VideoSift Now Available on Droids and iPhones (Sift Talk Post)

Hey, Lucky! Awesome work on this! I know that you have the "View VS in full" link on the mobile page - any chance you can put a "View mobile VideoSift" in the bottom footer of the normal page, so I can flip back and forth without having to clear my cache? Thanks!

Done.

Have you been using the mobile version of VideoSift? It already currently shows only YouTube videos. The first time you open VS on a mobile device you're supposed to be redirected to the mobile version; perhaps it didn't do that for you. It does so for me on the Droid and the Nexus One should do the same, but who knows, maybe not. :-?

Thanks...came totally out of the blue, have not been sifting much.

Hey... have you ever thought about a filtered view for smartphone users who can only play back YT? I'm on a nexus one...at least for now, have no full-blown flash. Feels like most vids are YT already, but filtering out the non-YT would make time wasting more efficient for mobile users.

Google Nexus One review

Psychologic says...

Hmm, I hadn't thought about the copy/paste thing. On the Droid you can hold down the Shift key and drag your finger over any text you want to copy. It even copies automatically, so no menus are needed. I'm surprised he didn't even mention the built in navigation or voice-to-text features.

Eye Candy: Mostly pointless, but it's important to some people. The animations don't really get in the way, but they can be turned off if desired.

Pinch Zoom: Probably useful, but I mostly operate my phone with one thumb anyway, and the controls are intuitive enough. I don't think it is specifically a patent issue though. Other US phones have it, as does the European version of Droid. There are free apps that use it, and it can be enabled in the map with a little work.

Apps: The store could be better, but you can search it easily enough. I am curious what functionality he is missing from the iPhone apps though.

App Switcher: I could be wrong, but I think it shows the six most recently opened apps. I would like it to show more than six, but there are plenty of free apps that show more if needed.

I never owned an iPhone so I can't really comment on the differences. I hear that Apple isn't playing well with Adobe, so no Flash support for the iPhone. It should be available on just about everything else some time in 2010 (according to Adobe). On the upside, the iPhone does appear to have the most accurate finger tracking of the three phones.

The Nexus does have the fastest cpu so far (that I know of) at ~1Ghz. I wouldn't give up my keyboard for it though. Maybe they can put it to some good use with more support for voice commands and language translation (Droid and Nexus already have some translation... speak to it in english and it will audibly translate to other languages, but it is limited currently). Otherwise it's only good for animations and flash games.

I look forward to the current batch of phones being obsolete by the end of the year. Competition is always a good thing. =)

Notes: Google Goggles is great, and Verizon's network does let you use the 3G internet while talking on the phone, despite what AT&T's commercials state.
