Derren Brown interview on Frost over the World

At the very end, the interviewer says (something like): "Pleasure to have us, uh, have you with us". Derren Brown responds: "Pleasure to have us see you too". I wonder if he was purposely 'mirroring' Sir David Frost; I think he was still trying to get a read on the interviewer. Either way, it made me smile.

In all the clips, he does things that seem tricky but may just be misdirection aimed at those of us trying to figure out the 'tricks'. It's like a game to figure out what's part of the trick and what's just misdirection.

Derren Brown attends dinner party, blows minds

You should read his book, it's quite interesting. Sometimes he's already put a suggestion into someone long before the trick goes off. It's probable that he sent some queues to the young woman at the start of dinner, and then got her to think of black. His genius comes where he puts an idea in your head, and gets you to believe that you thought it.

Would not be hard to follow that logic, if you have a subconcious suggestion of "black" and then do a word association game, where you think of the first word as a reaction, and black comes to your mind =)

I luv me some Derren Brown, he is adamant about not using stooges. In some of his shows, he shows clips where his tricks go terribly wrong =)

I've watched a small marathon of Derren Brown lately. Fascinating stuff!

He really is a master of how the subconscious works. If you want to see an example of how one trick works, watch:

The pin number could have been involuntary muscle response in the person's hand. If you watch the video again, you will notice that Derrin is staring at the hand to look for responses. The word game... I don't know, but I've seen Derren's style and he typically sets people up subconsciously for his tricks.

A great example:

^ I for one do not doubt that a man who is able to subconsciously convince normal people to commit armed robbery against the Bank of England is able to guess how much money people have on them.

I have my doubts about both myself. At first glance the bank robbery looked like one of his more plausible 'tricks' but after seeing some other tricks that, simply, had to be a setup on some level and Brown admitting as much I now doubt anything he does that seems too much to be true.

He repeatedly grabbed her by the wrists and moved her around, I surmise that the relative stiffness of her arms/wrists is how he got most of his information.

Hypnotists use light touches like that to gauge susceptibility to subtle forms of suggestion and to help cue up certain decisions and reactions. It's just as likely he was trying to suggest which hand to put it in.
