religion.. why not get over it and deal with reality instead

Two up-votes.

I was thinking about that today. If we look around our world, here, now, the Bible is as relevant as Beowulf. It's a great story, but it just doesn't apply to this situation, unless we get symbolic, and even then, it's just the enactment of a different story.

I actually believe that there is something greater than me, like invisible threads tying me to everything, but I don't have to be indoctrinated to a lesser ritual to touch those strings.

I'm not bashing the ritual. I'm just saying that I'm as close to it as any holy man.

AlterEgo: Impressive 3D Facial Modelling and Motion Software

shuac says...

I was waiting for the operator to begin speaking (the true test)!

So finally, we have great-looking CG modeling that actually looks like it can speak (I'm looking at the lip/mouth animations in particular).

All the Hollywood CG films I've seen that attempt this kind realism-even-while-speaking (Polar Express, Final Fantasy, Beowulf) fail. Sure, those films look great...how could they not? But the characters in them do not look much like they're speaking.

So I'd say it's not comparable. This is better.

Motion Capture without markers, Awesome!

Drachen_Jager says...

Motion capture sucks. It never looks as good as decent quality animation and if you're going to use realistic human styled characters moving in ways humans can move (ie no superhero moves, cartoony moves or exaggerated movement) then you should just be filming with real actors.

This is why Beowulf and Polar Express sucked.

Aside from which, most motion capture is not clean, it needs an animator to fix all the little issues that occur anyhow. See Max Steel Season 3 Episode 1 where Max and Kat are fighting with staffs down a staircase and onto pilings for an example of "motion capture" that's actually about 75% properly animated because it's nearly impossible for the mocap crew to actually perform that crap. Believe me it would have been less animation work to just animate it from the beginning.

I think this compilation was made pre-Beowulf. I wasn't such a big fan, but him screaming "I am the teeth in the darkness," etc, as he slammed Grendel's arm in the door would have fit well here.

'Beowulf' uncensored internet trailer, now with extra nudity

conan says...

Funny. Just watched Beowulf yesterday.

IMO Angelina's scene is by far the only moment worth of watching in this movie. Effects are okay but especially the faces (women's in particular) look awkwardly artificial.

The only reason for me to watch this movie to the end was the fact that i got it on BluRay and it was my premier 1080p movie on my new tellie ;-)

This was one heck of a movie, although I admit, I've yet to meet a girl that liked it even half as much as any of my friends.

MG - I was of very similar mind before I saw it - never liked motion capture CGI, never watched Polar Express for this reason, but when my wife insisted on seeing Beowulf (she likes 'cartoons', what can I say? ), I was most pleasantly surprised.

Holy CRAPR, kronosposeiden goes Silver Diamond! (Books Talk Post)

blankfist says...

500 Diamond?! Great Jesuits! Congratulations, KP! Very exciting, bro. I'd be even happier for you if you liked Beowulf, but everyone has their faults. Congrats, amigo. Your new power will be the ability to invoke *instastrip for Choggie so you can see him naked for a period of one hour. So, go forth and burn out your retinas to your heart's content.

And, DFT, I think Kronos has already lost his "faction creation" privileges.
