Actually I was considering a "Dark" channel. By "Dark" I mean stuff that is moody, or film-noirish, or dark humor, or even non-fictional stuff that makes you feel cynical about the world (example). But it's just a thought for now, because I'm going to be working so much now that I probably won't have time to properly maintain a channel. We'll see.

I'd love to see a Trippy Channel (vids to watch high) or a weird Channel (avant-garde, dark, dada and general strangeness).

Do you have anything in mind?

Okay, I guess that settles it. I'm going with the Mentos channel.

Not Today Motherfucker!

dystopianfuturetoday says...

"1. Not everything that people say is a good sift is actually a good sift."

Absolutely. Taste is entirely subjective. You have no obligation to agree with other opinions.

"2. A sift need not be art to be shitty."

Duh, shit comes in all flavors.

"3. Just because people say something is sift-worthy, doesn't mean something is sift-worthy."

You just reworded point #1 and labeled it #3. You owe me another point.

"4. Sifts aren't inherently good."

You, again, just reworded point #1 and labeled it #4. Now you owe me two.

Last point. Calling something art is not a value judgement, just a description.

For instance: The video created by the crying Brittany Spears guy is by definition art. I personally find it stupid and annoying, but that does not strip it of its definition.

Not Today Motherfucker is comprised entirely of elements that we find culturally offensive: Profanity, poor special effects, low resolution, bad music, a generic one liner is the only dialog, it's titled after said one-liner, the title card is as long as the movie, the UFO seems to be pretty easily destructible, the sound effects are jarring, etc.

Separately, these elements are commonplace and dull, but put them together and I'm amused.

rember not liking this makes me like it more. That is part of the fun of both punk and the avant gard.

Airy, pretentious, snobby? I won't object if you call me those things.

Who is right and/or wrong? Both of us.

I never thought I'd be writing a dissertation on the aesthetics of Not Today Motherfucker, but why not.

Avant-garde? Dadaism? The day those terms can be accurately applied to a Youtube video hailed as brilliant by Something Awful, I'll...oh fuck it, that day will never come, and especially not because of this video. Downvote this piece of crap, and this self-indulgent sift. At least Karaidl's sift had a ninja turtle.

The Official MycroftHolmz Roast! (Parody Talk Post)

karaidl says...

The last roast of Choggie was like taking the Sift's main celebrity to task, so this one's kinda like pulling a splinter from our toe.

Taking a quick browse through his latest comments - they reek of futile stupidity, as he persists in promoting videos that can't be promoted - like a dumb little kid swinging and missing the goddamn baseball everytime even though it's just sitting there on the T. Hey! Those are all my videos! Keep your virtual boner to yourself, I'm not THAT awesome.

I think my fiance would shoot me.

That's the most interactive blow-up doll I've ever heard of.

Just going off his personal, interesting choice of beer, "Troegs Hopback," I think it's safe to assume Holmz thinks of himself as an avant-garde sort of unique individual. That is to say, he's a douchebag. Drink Bud Light like a normal person, not some emo loner. Nobody likes a guy who gets aroused at the thought of being an nonconformist.

Well, I'm looking forward to the next roast, when we take on somebody who matters, instead of digging deep into the sweaty, nether regions of the Sift.

CNN debate :: a question loaded with cheap shots at ron paul

9205 says...

10 years ago, I would have looked up to this and be in admiration that in the US, people can ask questions to presidential candidates about anything they want - via the Internet! How modern! I probably would have seen it as an exemplary way to handle pre elections debates.

Today I see it for what it is: first, on the technology front it's just one company (youtube/goog) getting advertisement in exchange of service by another corp (cnn/timewarner). It's NOT avant garde or anything, just a different take on the 'question from the audience' concept, and ultimately just a marketing exercise.

Second, in terms of the debate itself, you should spend time reading the responses/comments posted on youtube. Indeed it turns out a lot of the questions asked to the republicans were asked by democrat supporters including a gay campaign helper for Hillary Clinton. Hardly the 'people of the street' they were supposed to represent.

To me, as someone who doesn't live in the US and ultimately doesn't care who wins what, it was really evident that most of the questions were bogus and/or carefully selected then edited by the CNN staff. The democrats got 2 or 3 tough questions reserved to dead-end candidates that won't win anyway, while the republican got hammered with a mix of loaded questions and comments from cliche rednecks that gave them a bad image. The 'gun owner' one for example was so contrived and cliche I actually laughed out loud watching it.

I hope the american public doesn't fall for that.

"Clair de Lune" - deleted scene from Disney's 'Fantasia'

kronosposeidon says...

I hear ya, JAPR. Another piece of trivia regarding Fantasia, from Wikipedia: "Besides its avant-garde qualities, Fantasia was notable for being the first major film released in stereophonic sound, using a process dubbed 'Fantasound'." You should be able to hear some stereo effects when you listen to this too. Nothing eye-popping, but still impressive given the technology of the day.

Cool little song that lasts exactly one minute (in French)

calvados says...

Juste encore minute, juste encore minute,
Pour me faire une beauté ou pour une cigarette,
Juste encore minute, juste encore minute,
Pour un dernier frisson, ou pour un dernier geste,
Juste encore minute, juste encore minute,

Countdown Special Comment: Bush, Cheney Should Resign

AnimalsForCrackers says...

"I can only assume your perspective to be presented in the likeness of Stephen Colbert in an attempt to point out the stupidity of the Ultra Right by portraying it's arrogance. Bravo in your presentation. "

I've been assuming pretty much the same thing. That Bill'O is some sort of avant-garde parody of the real thing...it wouldn't matter much to me if he wasn't though. Still entertaining either way; we need all different types around to mix things up.

Hmm...how can we make Mike Gravel look crazier?

theaceofclubz says...

Ok Ok - Did anyone else get the impression that he was trying to make their head explode, got frustrated and then threw the rock.

Seriously though, I think he has got the elusive and desired "avant-garde artist" vote in the bag. If only a crying clown would come by in the end.

Romanticism vs. Modernism at the Royal Opera

Sylvester_Ink says...

I don't understand the attraction of such extreme forms of modernism. While modernists such as Stravinsky bring fresh, new ideas to the field, there is such thing as going too far. I think this kind of thing is more of an avant garde/postmodernist style, and those generally push a bit far into the extremes. (Atonal "music" is an example.)
In the end, such extremes often take something that's potentially beautiful and turn it into something rather ugly. (In my eyes . . .)
