The Long Game Part 2: the missing chapter

draak13 says...

A pretty neat historic video, and a nice illumination on a general trend!

However, I find his argument against the continuation of the trend for otherwise ordinary people to aspire to greatness to be a bit shallow. The idea that youngness and instant gratification (which is a recipe for impatience?) leads to the loss of ability of people to go through the 'difficult years' is a bit disconnected. It could be argued the exact opposite way; since all of the information we need to acquire inspiration for all great ideas can be googled in a few seconds instead of gathered from libraries across the state in a matter of days, the willingness of people to traverse the difficult years may be better than ever. I know that when I need to quickly get familiarized with a completely new and dauntingly technical subject, google and wikipedia really help a lot, and I would feel quite intimidated if I needed to go about it the old fashioned way.

Last Week Tonight: Exporting Homophobia

The world is on fire and this funny man spends his time slamming the country that's making him rich. So what else is new?

Don't bring up the muslims! Don't bring up radical Islam! Don't talk about sharia law!

Let's instead have a hiphopping Lincoln and easy targets like an African potentate with Christian aspirations.

The difference new engines make in Formula 1

TheGenk says...

from http://www.formula1.com/news/features/2014/1/15408.html:
Rule change: Introduction of new power unit consisting of a 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine and two Energy Recovery Systems (ERS)
Implications: The 2.4-litre normally-aspirated V8 engines of 2013 produced around 750bhp, with an additional 80bhp available for around six seconds per lap from KERS. The 2014 V6s put out around 600bhp. However, the two ERS systems (ERS-K and ERS-H) will give drivers an additional 160bhp or so for approximately 33 seconds per lap.

Transforming Formula One: 2014 Rules Explained by Red Bull

oritteropo says...

Yes. The naturally aspirated v8 engines were increasingly irrelevant for road car technology, so the aims of the new engine rules were to introduce the types of technology that are relevant to road cars (turbo, regenerative braking, fuel efficiency).

Two less-intended side effects are that these are the most expensive engines ever (in an era when everybody is talking about cost reductions!) and that everyone is wondering whether anyone will finish the first race...

They actually had the battery packs last year, but this year have reduced the fuel allocation by a third but without reducing the power output of the power units.

Cool *animation. Can anyone explain why they need such big battery packs and use regenerative breaking? Are they driving hybrids or something?

How Wolves Changed Yellowstone National Park

TheFreak jokingly says...

Still, the wolves need to be removed from Yellowstone. Don't forget the monetary impact to ranchers surrounding the park. The financial aspirations of humans need to be put above nature.

Something like, less than 1% of livestock in 3 states surrounding the park has been killed by wolves. Think about the ranchers. They're people and deserve to live free of the negative impact of nature. Just because you live in the domain of wolves and the wild, doesn't mean you should feel the impact of it. Unless it's the humans doing the hunting of course...I mean, that's what living free in the wilderness is all about.

"violent and outspoken when confronted with blind insanity"...you must pitch a fight club fit when you pass a mirror.

You really do not have a clue...and cannot have a clue. You ARE an offense...but as easily walked away from without an afterthought as a fart in public.

For all your ranting and posturing, you are a frightened child with a man sounding voice trying to be less alone, less ignorant, and less lost...and yes much of that can be said of us all save your volume...much more the pity of you.

You are not a champion. not a voice from on high, not a beacon of light. Should you really desire or aspire to be, go work on yourself, silently, in silence...and good luck.

...now I'm going to follow my own advice.

Tracey Spicer on society's expectations of women

chingalera says...

First of all, I'd like to point-out that once the lovely Ms. Spicer here took of that hideously frumpy dress, got rid of her patina of shellac and wet her hair, she suddenly became much comelier and glamorous and down-to-earth sexy for me personally, as I have ALWAYS gravitated towards women who shun make-up who looked like they just threw-on their favorite comfortable clothes, and could give a fuck about what anyone thinks about how they should look or act.

Any man who thinks otherwise is most-likely, a superficial and abusive fucking douchebag who will invariably seek-out the female form of douchbag, and have lots of power, money, and influence in either politics, banking, sales/insurance, or some other form of criminal activity which does nothing for the planet except create more douchebag children who will turn into bigger douchebag adults than their sheit-scumbag parents ever dreamed. This is a huge phenom in the current planetary paradigm and has been going-on for centuries to create the dysfunctional western civilization we enjoy today, cascading into insanity and oblivion, a world controlled by completely evil pieces of shit.

Here's the real-deal Trancecoach and it's in-line with Bill Burr's idea of an 'epidemic of gold-digging whores' routine so popular here among sift-voters, because it's all true. Assholes and douchebags wield enormous power and control over the rest of us honest and capable peeps on the planet because people in-general, don't know who they are or why they think and act the way they do, because as victims of abuse both physical and psychological, they give their own energy and power over to these cunts who are ass-raping the planet with their lies and egos, their narcissism and toxic personalities.

These hopelessly evil humans have been very successful in programming the herd-mokeys as well to aspire to become cunts, douchbags, and assholes just like themselves, as evidenced in the inordinate amount of these gullible mini-versions running loose on the globe and breeding like fruit flies.

This phenomenon is endemic in the west, the Middle East, China and South America, and it will get way worse before it gets any better.

Heart - Magic Man Live

Trout says...

Ah, interesting... very different & spirited vocal from Ann Wilson. Cool stuff. And yet - although Ann Wilson is singing live - the rest of the band is faking along to a pre-recorded backing track. Not uncommon in those days for TV guest spots. (And, of course, de rigueur along with "vocal support track" for any aspiring ingenue pop star these days.)

Also, check out Luke Skywalker, faking it on lead guitar! Complete with, uh, some sort of concealed light saber weapon...

Truths About Gandhi

Trancecoach says...

Molyneux tries to take down Gandhi, like he tried to take down Mandela a few days after he died. Here, he gets into some interesting topics (and others not so interesting), like this premise that Gandhi supposedly didn't base his ethics on logical reasoning. This appears to have some truth to it since much of Gandhi's thinking was of a different kind than what most had seen at the time.

In this article, however, Molyneux is himself found to be falling short of his rationalist aspirations. The author, David Gordon, knows (as did Gandhi) the difficulty -- indeed the impossibility -- of coming up with a 100% rationalist basis for morality/ethics.

If nothing else, the axioms upon which the ethics are based will necessarily be irrational -- not anti-reason -- but outside of reason.

George Carlin "I Gave Up On My Species"

kevingrr says...

@enoch

This has nothing to do with how I feel about myself or how you feel about yourself. It isn't about whether we are good or bad. That is not topical.

Carlin loves to say that everything is in the toilet, everything and everyone is terrible, and we are all going down.

My point is while it is important to point out our failings, of which I admitted there are many, things ARE getting better incrementally over time.

This guy telling his kids they are terrible is an idiot. You don't need to tell your kids that their finger paintings are picasso. Just educate them and help them to aspire to be conscientious good people.

Why Are American Health Care Costs So High?

chingalera says...

@Yogi-stupider and stupider by the day, and more addicted to the technology which enslaves them, the slow-drip intravenous velvet of all media corps'. propaganda (not only Fox, MSNBC, CNN, et all), and an unrealistic and programmed desire to aspire to economic heights attainable only by those who run the game.
