What a Sword Really Sounds Like Being Removed from a Sheath

Payback says...

My problem with movie guns is the "hand cannon" sound. Like in all the Dirty Harry movies. Every pistol shot seems to sound like a 50cal Barrett sniper rifle in a sewer pipe.

As cool sounding as it is wrong.

And it's not just pointy sticks, but boom sticks too; notice how many times pistols, shotguns and ARs are loudly and dramatically "chick-chicked"? My favourite is when they do it several times (most often with a pistol or shotgun) before firing a single shot. Nice job spreading your rounds on the floor.

I'm also wondering how this can be real because the 50cal rounds are very rarely used in rifles. Though I may be incorrect in this sense, I have never seen an old-fashion-designed and styled 50cal bolt-action rifle like the one this guy has. There are 2 50 cal sniper rifles that I know of... the Barrett M82A1 rifle is one I learned of some time ago to be an anti-device rifle, used for picking off devices from long range. The other is popularized by various video games like BF2, CoD4, MW2, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 -- the M95.

To add also into the doubting mix is the fact that a youngster like him would be holding a weapon that can FIRE a 50cal round. I won't be surprised by people holding something that can fire NATO rounds. But a rifle that fires a 50cal? Sorry, my expectations for those capable of firing a 50cal round from a rifle is someone in uniform and one who has had years of marksman training.

Torture- Never Say Never? (Philosophy Talk Post)

dgandhi says...

>> ^quantumushroom:If you seriously believe torture "doesn't work" ... simply kill the bastards where we find them

The overwhelming evidence is that torture, in fact, does not work. Your assessment that in the absence of the ability to usefully torture, we must engage is whole sale murder seems, a bit strained.

Consider that many people were taken into custody on the basis of information provided by paid stool pidgins. Are you suggesting we just assassinate anybody we are told to by any ethically questionable character willing to take our money?

If somebody is willing to get paid to accuse you, should the US gov have a sniper put a 50cal round through your head on your way to church? Or should they...GASP...use due process to determine if you are actually guilty?

Desert Eagle .50 with slow motion shockwave

TheSofaKing says...

For those who think it is fake... I've never fired one, and I am by no means an expert but... my understanding is that the supersonic velocity of the 50cal round shapes the muzzle flash. The camera's speed may not be fast enough to captures it per say, but the blooming effect on the sensor of the camerea would essentially allow it to still be picked up...like if you look at something bright and then close your eyes...you can still see it.

I also checked several other Desert Eagle videos and they all contain to some degree, a similar effect, including the following one with some really good slow motion from different angles.

and another

I'm not saying it's real, but since it is so cool...I choose to believe it.

Apache and UH-60 Precision Target Fire using IR

BoneyD says...

I've seen this video floating around the internets and I tend to think it's been mis-labeled. Though it's difficult to be sure, I believe the attacking craft are likely to be AH-6 (or MH-6) Little Birds or something similar. They use two forward firing miniguns and/or rockets, as opposed to a Spectre or Blackhawk which are side mounted. The latter would be firing as they orbit the target, whereas we see the rounds in the video as though from a stationary (or directly approaching) vehicle. I've also heard it argued that they were AH-64 Apaches doing the strafe, but i'm fairly certain they only use the slower firing 30mm cannon.

Still, an impressive video! It's interesting how the ground fire from the .50cal chimes in when the chopper attack has finished. I would guess to keep any survivors heads down, lest they attack the vulnerable passing aircraft?

OK, so the Saddam video is officially "out there"... (Sift Talk Post)

joedirt says...

Look, regardless of your view on Reagan shooting, JFK assaination, etc. and whether or not real-world violence should be banned from sift...

Saddam hanging and dead Crocodile Hunters, are just sensational tabloidism. Wait a year and then decide if it is historical.

Anyways, what about all the unmanned air combat vehicle videos and military porn showing people being blown up and shot with missles, 50cal, etc. Those humans are still humans. Is someone going to scrub all those videos?

So I could care less about what is snuffy and what is historic.

Saddam is clearly on the same level as Paris Hilton sex video. Just stupid Fox-news level sensationalism.
