I had the same reaction when I first discovered the site too. The sad thing is, I've had 3 out of 5 of the Big Five they listed: Night Train, MD 20/20, and Thunderbird. I'm just 2 wines away from decrepitude. I guess I better go shopping for refrigerator boxes soon.

thanks for the link to bumwine.com... best laugh I've had over the internets in a while!

Priceless. Give that man a Siftie, goddammit!

PS: Is there an award for the sifter whose name appears most often in the award categories BESIDES dag? (Mmmhmm...ME!) Hey, selfish-bastardism is a hallmark of the Sift. I'm not immune. If I can't get a t-shirt, do you have VideoSift thong bikini? I wouldn't mind wearing it and dancing around in front of a floor-length mirror. (Sorry, joedirt. Don't mean to bring back any traumatic memories.)

Man, the Thunderbird is really starting to kick in. G'night.

Absolutely Accept it on its merits alone, and blank the bad stuff where possible. Lets you get the absolute most out of such experiences. Its always better to expect the worst of a film, and be mildly surprised and pleased by any semi average points, rather than believe hype and be dashed when instead of being a perfect 10 its only an 8.5 or a 7... Good points in a film should be a good thing, and not dismissed completely for not being quite good enough. I'd watched Eragon just before, and while parts of it grated, by the end I could accept it for what it was.

In reply to this comment by raven:
So you watched it then? And turned your brain off at the appropriate moments? Because really, that is the best way to enjoy movies like that, just stop thinking and enjoy the special effects and cheesy cuteness of it all.

In reply to this comment by Thylan:
It was fun

In reply to this comment by raven:
Yes Thylan, you should see it, but don't expect something dead serious hugely artistic... Its a fun movie, the kind you just watch for a laugh and don't think too hard about, like playing a video game... I mean, it has Demons, Magic, Nazis, Rasputin... all of my favorite movie components, so really, how can you go wrong?

Might not be as great as Mignola's original work, but still, I loved the first Hellboy, and I can't wait for this to come out.

I decided against keeping "kids" primarily because of the degeneration of the conversation early on - I figured channelling swampgirl's pleas, either we get rid of swearing in comments on a *kids vid's comments, or we move it to another valid channel.

My pleasure in reaching a happy compromise though, have a Happy New Year's Eve Eve.

In reply to this comment by raven:
Really? The kids tag? I would have thought 'humanitarian'... because in my mind that encompasses something larger than one family on Xmas morning. But whatever, its your vid... thanks for seeing my point though, it is much appreciated.

Fair enough, done - kids tag off.

In reply to this comment by raven:
It doesn't have to be ONLY a 'grisly side of things'... I mean, despite the terrible nature of a lot of the subject matter of my channel, I think its important that we also not forget the human side of the conflict... and your video is certainly that. So please, leave it in the WOT channel, it is very much needed!

In reply to this comment by Krupo:
Ah, capisce

In reply to this comment by Krupo:
Deliberately "five channeled" that post to maximize control over the channel assignments, and b/c I also considered the WOT channel but decided against it, because that's really more of a "grisly side of things" rather than the "happy heart-warming side" of things time of channel, in my interpretation.

In reply to this comment by calvados:
This one should def be *waronterrored.

i'm glad you got where i'm coming from and were able to put it more eloquently than me, raven. i'm sorry you've had those experiences though; that sucks! i read smibbo's reply to you here just now, and it's a good example of how polarizing this video has been. you specifically said several times in your comment that this treatment by men is NOT based on the "beauty" factor, but it's hard not to get emotional about this stuff i guess.

In reply to this comment by raven:
I agree with Kate that it is wrong to assume that the girl in the video is crying over nothing, or she is doing so just because she is beautiful... granted, that bit was lumped together with the other pretty minor complaints by everyone else, but I would think that the mere fact that she is crying is probably indicative that whatever it was she experienced was indeed pretty terrible... because as she said, some comments just do not make you feel pretty, they make you feel objectified, and even dirty.

I'm not talking about the basic, "You're very pretty" kind of compliment, but the kind that borders on, or is, sexual harrassment... you can't know unless its happened to you how terribly frightening and disgusting it is to be trapped in a elevator with a man who can't help but stare lecherously at you, and then ventures to say (true story), "I'd like to fuck you if you let me" Out of the blue, just like that, its terrifying, does not make one feel pretty but rather dirty somehow, and yes, it does bring out tears. Or there are even sometimes worse incidents involving coworkers or fellow students, where the objectification is continuous and after a while it becomes more than tiresome but rather stressful to have them all keep track of what you wear everyday, whether or not it shows off anything, or have them (rather publicly) get a pool going to see which of them will get to fuck you first (not kidding, guys, who are seemingly otherwise professional sorts, do actually do this kind of shit), which makes you begin to hate yourself and not want to go into school or work everyday. I'm not suggesting that this does not happen to those who aren't considered "beautiful" (whatever that cultural construct might currently be), but its damaging, and I can completely relate to where that girl is probably coming from.

smibbo says...

the sexual harrassment you describe happens to ugly women too. it is very insensitive to make the association between your good looks and degrading treatment by men; its NOT a "looks" thing, its a FEMALE thing. I guess i'll keep saying it and you and the other pretty women will keep devalueing my point. I guess its hard for yall to believe ugly women gt harrassed too? They do. Because degrading and devalueing a woman is something "man" does for power and intimidation, not because you're so damned hot he can't help himself. They do it because they are cowardly jackasses, not because you look so great, no matter what they tell you. You give them a kind of "excuse" when you believe they do it for your looks. Stop believing that please, stop giving them that kind of "out" and please stop devaluing other women's experiences by constantly saying that because you're beautiful you get assholes bothering you; all us women get those assholes.

Crazy?

In reply to this comment by raven:
I do! Especially big black crazy intelligent ones... why do you think I picked Raven in the very first place?

In reply to this comment by ant:
Hmmph, I thought you loved the birds.

In reply to this comment by raven:
'Raven' as been my avatar/nickname on the internet for many years now, I've also used a longer version, 'Raven Wilde' as an alias for some small art-related projects I've been involved in. My avatar is out of a Peterson field guide I've had since I was a kid.

We had another similar discussion about this some time ago, Avatar Stories and Favorites, some of the older members probably remember it.
