It's interesting, I'm almost positive I saw an explanation that pointed to how to remove the tabs, either in an email from google, or maybe in one of those popup dialogs they seem to like nowadays. Either way, it was the only thing that stuck about it.

I wasn't too thrilled with them to start with, but now that I'm used to them, I don't think I want to go back...I just need to find the time to do a bit better training of the filters.

Thanks, that helped. I got annoyed and tried to revert it when they appeared, but I didn't happen to look there. At the time I did a google search and came up empty, so I tried Settings -> Settings, but not Configure Inbox. So, maybe it was idiot-proof, but not for a big enough idiot like me.

In any case, that sorted me out.

To me, saying .gif as "jif" is rather like answering the phone and saying "this is he", or referring to "attorneys general". You might be technically/grammatically correct, but most people are going to think you sound like a pretentious *&%#. If you're cool with that, cool. If not, go with the more common yet less "correct" version, and roll your eyes at anyone that calls you on it.

Nice. I'm not anywhere glorious (Mae Sot), but there are enough Westerners around to make for a social scene. Of course, I've maintained my celebrity status by carting around my 2-year old daughter with me. It provides for constant harassment and a flood of (mostly unwanted) gifts everywhere we go.

I'm out in the semi-boonies, Uttaradit province in the North. I like it up here, pretty nice smallish-town environment. Locals are nice and not too many Westerners around so we still enjoy mild celebrity status.

As a recent arrival in Thailand, I definitely sympathize. Of course, I'm not even trying to learn Thai since I have to learn Karen for my job. Not that that makes it any easier since it's a tonal language as well. Where in Thailand are you?

MilkmanDan said:

Good stuff -- I've been in Thailand 6 years and I know that while I may some day be a fluent listener in Thai, I'll never be a fluent, "sounds like a native" speaker. Tonal languages are a bitch for anyone who didn't grow up with one.
