Why red means Republican and blue means Democrat

Always thought it was weird that America switches the traditions red=left, blue=right colour scheme.

Interesting. I figured it was Right = Red, Left=bLue, but thinking back a bit further "reds" for commie leftists and "blues" for Lincoln's union army makes a lot of sense.

I'd wager we're stuck with the current association now until one or both of the parties implodes (which they both sure seem to be trying hard to accomplish).
