Jim Brauker, Ph.D., spent 25 years as a biomedical scientist studying skin inflammation. He has been retired for 8 years, during which he has spent much time doing small property deer habitat work. Because he has high poison ivy sensitivity, he has tried many poison ivy treatments, poison ivy soaps, poison ivy creams, and other poison ivy products. Because he had such a strong poison ivy allergy, he either needed to give up habitat work or figure out how to optimize urushiol prevention. Poison ivy prevention was key, but poison ivy removal, actually urushiol removal was key to preventing poison ivy rash. This is something that I needed to know. Growing up the Urushiol oil never really effected me. But lately it has. I have always kept my distance from it. I recently had it on my fingers. I blame my outdoor kitty.

Poison ivy has always been my kryptonite, although luckily I haven't had an episode in years. The worst ever was when I ran a weed whacker while wearing shorts, didn't realize I was hitting poison ivy. Both legs were a crusty, oozing mess for 2 weeks. My coworkers took pity and went out and got my lunch for me every day, knowing that walking was an ordeal. Good times.

I've only ever heard of poison ivy on TV or in books, but are you seriously telling me that in hundreds of years, no one ever thought to just wash it off with a rag?

Good knowledge here! Had that urushiol oil get on me last year while looking for a golf ball in the woods and got it behind my ears. Ugh! Slow and painful irritation for a month!
