Last Week Tonight - Ferguson and Police Militarization

ChaosEngine says...

What evidence? All the evidence released so far shows that Wilson chased Brown and shot him. Maybe on planet lantern that's being in the right, but most people aren't that keen on police summarily executing citizens.

and @enoch, I think you're being unreasonable. Lots of people (myself included) respond to bob and lanterns unsavoury posts. That's kinda the point of having a discussion board.

Getting back to the subject at hand, the evidence appears to show that the police officer was in the right, while the decedent prompted his own demise.

For those who don't know this man (I didn't) he spent 50 years in and out of the British Parliament.

"Anthony Neil Wedgwood "Tony" Benn, PC (3 April 1925 – 14 March 2014), the former 2nd Viscount Stansgate, was a British Labour Party politician who was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1950 to 2001 (with two short breaks) and a cabinet minister under Harold Wilson and James Callaghan." /wiki

What I listen to each morning of Tax Season

Trancecoach says...

"The other day I saw a film called The Edge, which I regarded as the best thing to come out of Hollywood since The Silence of the Lambs. Perhaps not coincidentally, this flick also starred Anthony Hopkins. In one scene, Hopkins and his co-star, Alec Baldwin, seem in an absolutely hopeless situation, lost in the Arctic, stalked by a hungry bear, without weapons, seemingly doomed. Baldwin collapses, and Hopkins has a magnificent monologue, talking Baldwin out of his despair. The speech runs, roughly, like this: "Did you know you can make fire out of ice? You can, you know. Fire out of ice. Think about it. Fire out of ice. Think. Think."

This riddle has both a pragmatic and symbolic (alchemical) answer. The pragmatic answer you can find in the film, explicitly; and it might prove useful if you ever get lost in the north woods; and the alchemical, or Zen Buddhist, answer is also in the film, implicitly, and only perceptible to those who understand the dense character Hopkins plays in the story. It might prove useful whenever despair seems to overwhelm you. So, to those who at the end of this book still can't understand or sympathize with my Nietzschean yea-saying, I quote again: "Fire out of ice. Think. Think."

Who was that Prometheus guy and why did he give us fire in the first place?"

~Robert Anton Wilson

Heart - Magic Man Live

Trout says...

Ah, interesting... very different & spirited vocal from Ann Wilson. Cool stuff. And yet - although Ann Wilson is singing live - the rest of the band is faking along to a pre-recorded backing track. Not uncommon in those days for TV guest spots. (And, of course, de rigueur along with "vocal support track" for any aspiring ingenue pop star these days.)

Also, check out Luke Skywalker, faking it on lead guitar! Complete with, uh, some sort of concealed light saber weapon...

Edward Norton - Movie Trailer (Wes Anderson Spoof) - SNL

poolcleaner says...

You had me at Wes Anderson. And then you had me again at spoof. And then you had me at Edward Norton (even though it was at the beginning of the description). And then you lost me at SNL. And then you had me when Edward Norton looked and sounded a lot like Ownen Wilson. And then you had me at Danny Glover. And then you didn't have me after that, but it was still good.

FWIW, E.O. Wilson's put forward some controversial theories about the biological bases for behavior, suggesting that there's scientific evidence to support some rather racist or misogynistic ideas.

Glenn Greenwald - Why do they hate us?

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Great post - good discussion.

Maybe they also hate us for our hypocrisy. Supporting autocratic leaders like Saddam and Mubarak with money and weapons - while spouting the virtues of democracy. That certainly bugs the shit out of me.

George Washington, Woodrow Wilson and Ron Paul would like to see the US disentagle from foreign entanglements - close bases, pull back troops, stop military support.

At first, I say Yes! Then I think about it ... Nature abhors a vacuum. In a unipolar world, what happens when the pole removes itself from the game?
