Being happy has nothing to do with money (or drugs)

bcglorf says...

Not to be pedantic, but I know enough people who've claimed money has "nothing to do with happiness" literally that I have to counter it.

If you lack the money to keep you, or even more your children nourished or protected from the elements, you will discover there are many reasons for unhappiness that money can aid with. Money in no way grants or guarantees happiness, but there are a lot of things that make you miserable and sad that money can overcome, hungry and homeless children being the most obvious.

Is this directed at my point of view, asmo?

If it is, I don't recognize myself in it.

My criticisms were all pointed at men choosing ONLY facade.

I never said the women shouldn't wear makeup. I didn't talk about their intelligence or their skills with guns -- I have no idea how intelligent or skilled these women are.

My being creeped out was related to whoever assembled a statistically impossible collection of beautiful women, and then using a camera to give them prominence in a video purported about Keanu's shooting skills.

I admitted my error at assuming that Keanu was the person who gathered these women in one spot.

Certainly, I am guilty of being unhappy that women allow themselves to be used this way. But I didn't say that out loud. They are responding to the market, and there is indeed a market for beautiful facades.

I have no problem with sex workers (if they are protected from human trafficking and enslavement.) These women, whatever their other skills, are sex workers.

I do have a problem with men who surround themselves with ONLY sex workers.

Sorry, but that's just silly. Limited sexual experience doesn't mean you can't be aware that it's bad sex, you can still be unhappy with it but not know why. You might also think that it's just the way it is.

I wonder how many long suffering wives have just lain there while their clueless husbands mindlessly plowed away, they'll go through the motions while quietly waiting for it to be done. All the while assuming this is just part of their wifely duties.

I've heard a lot about how these days, despite our sex soaked culture there are women who have never really learned about their bodies and can't even get themselves off. And to be fair, the clueless husbands are often no better educated than they are.

I don't know, it seems pretty arbitrary to me either way. Actually the best argument for it IMO is that if you only have sex with one person, you aren't going to know if it's good or terrible. You won't have anything to compare it to and therefore something to make your life more unhappy if you think it's bad; one less issue to divorce for as well. Similarly, maybe if you were poor and couldn't afford fancy food, consciously avoiding ever trying the things you couldn't regularly afford so you would never be unhappy with not having it. It would be a question in the back of your mind, but not a source of unhappiness.

It would also have been nice to have some interview questions about how the sons are taught and treated by the same parents.

That guy did an excellent job. Kept things a bit neutral, hinted at being unhappy with Trump without being explicit about it, then cut straight to Russia when the opportunity presented itself. Really well played.

New Rule: The Lesser of Two Evils

enoch says...

i have to agree that when the election was nearing the end,and it was time to vote.the choice was pretty clear.

i never liked the "lesser of two evils" argument, but when faced with a choice of:

soft fascist, narcissistic used car salesman, who spoke in bombastic and racially charged rhetoric, but really said nothing.

or...

a war-mongering corporatist, who never saw a war she didn't want to send your kids to go die in,or a corporation she didn't want to extract donations from for political favors and who basically said nothing as well.except for 'well,at least i am not that THAT guy"--->points to trump.

i am still gonna say...go with the corporatist.

because in the end,at least on domestic policy, hillary would have been adequate.oh she would have signed the TPP,and fucked millions of american workers, and she would have most likely expanded the drone campaign, and continued with the american empires policy of "regime change",but she had/has the knowledge and capabilities to actual lead a government.

hillary knows how to politic, and understands how shit gets done in washinton, and things would have remained relatively unchanged here in america.maybe..maybe.... some incremental change due to the political pressure the sanders campaign brought.

so i get it,and maher is not exactly wrong per se",but i think he is missing the bigger picture that so many in the beltway have missed, and CONTINUE to miss, because they reside in their own, tiny and insulated bubble.

the american people were desperate for change, and they have been for decades.after obama's campaign of 2008,and his "hope and change" platform, which ignited the american people, only to see,not "hope and change" but rather "more of the same".

and what was hillary offering?
a new message or vision? a new path for america that would include everybody to blaze a new path of invention, creativity and imagination to create an america everyone could be proud of? and feel a part of?

nope..she was offering "more of the same".

well, americans had already had their fill of "more of the same".they had lost faith in a system that appeared to no longer represent them.so they chose the nuclear option for change.terrifying and horrifying change.

so go ahead and blame the "bernie bros".feel free to slap responsibility on those "uneducated and redneck hillbillies".cry and whine and point the finger at those liberals who refused to abandon their principles, and by all means bask in the glory of your own self-righteous moralizing, and condescendingly condemn anyone who voted for trump,or who refused to vote at all.

you can sit in a small room with everybody else who voted for hillary, and self-righteously smell each others farts and call it a rose, because you are obviously a better quality human being than the rest of us.

and by all means, refuse to examine the fact that hillary ran a shit campaign, and had no real message, vision or path to the future.ignore the corruption and blatant, and politically motivated shenanigans of the DNC.god forbid you experienced a moment of honesty.

is trump going to be a disaster of presidency?
well,it sure is shaping up to look that way isn't it?
but we have survived horrible presidents before, and we shall survive trump.

and on a positive note:
trump has brought many people out of their apathetic slumber, and they are scrutinizing everything he does with a fine toothed comb.the amount people who are becoming politically engaged is quite impressive.

there is nothing in our representative democracy quite as powerful as people gathering together to put pressure on our elected representatives.

town hall meetings, that used to be wastelands, are now being packed to over-flowing.with citizens calling out their representatives..to their FACE..on how unhappy they are.

so go ahead and ridicule those who voted for trump, but it is due to trump that so many have gotten off their couches and are taking it to their congressmen and senators.

just a non-controversial,and easily predicted side effect, when you put someone like trump in power.

man,the politics in my country is getting really fucking interesting!i cannot WAIT to see what happens in the next episode!

what do you guys think?

Louis C.K. Says They Should Stop Making Porn

Why it Probably Wasn’t Better Being Single

enoch says...

ah,the days of being in a relationship with a woman, who loved painkilllers with her jug wine.

who would wake me up in the dead of the night, using the super heated metal tops of a bic lighter on the bottom of my feet (those are called "smileys" for those who do not know) to scream at me about some girl who had the audacity to look my way at target, because 3:30am is the time to find out if i am having sexual thoughts about random women.

or an earlier girlfriend whose father was a prominent artist in the country and was holding a weekend jazz festival.i had a customer who had cerebal palsy, and one leg had been amputated, whose boyfriend had just broke up with her and she was a wreck.

so i had this bright idea! why doesn't this poor emotional wreck of a woman come to the jazz festival of my girlfriends dad? that will get her mind off things right?

but, having a second person accompany made me a little late.so when i finally showed up,my girlfriend was already half in the bag,and mad.i tried to explain and introduce her to mary, the heartbroken girl.

and my girlfriend broke my nose with a bottle of michelob.i do not think she cared that mary was heart broken, and an utter wreck in need of human company.i could be wrong, this is just a guess, but the bleeding from my broken nose may have been a strong indicator.

or how about the time i was counseling a long time friend, who had pulled a midnight move out to escape a man who had basically had her trapped in a spare room, chaining her to the wall.that man had gone as far as severing her achilles tendons, after her first attempt to escape, and this woman suffered from a severe case of PTSD.

now she did form an almost childlike bond to me.maybe because i had offered her the first taste of true compassion, and offered her safety and comfort, and allowed her to talk the poison and bile out that had been building inside her for over three years.

but her attachment to me,which was to be expected, was not viewed favorably by my girlfriend.i spent a lot of time and attention in drawing this broken and damaged young woman to feel safe, and to begin to feel human again(which infuriated my girlfriend).my patio was always filled with friends, artists and people of interest, and i did my best to bring a normalcy to this young womans life in order to help her acclimate, and to feel human again.

and my girlfriend would come home, get drunk, and start to whisper the most vile.and disgusting things..not about this young woman, but about me.

which,of course,if you understand the mentality of an abuse victim.especially one who had suffered such as she had.any criticism,or perceived threat to the person who had (in their mind) saved them, will create incredible anger and anxiety.

so because of my girlfriends irrational jealousy of this woman, and in her drunken selfishness, she went out of her way to make this woman feel as uncomfortable, and as unsafe (the exact opposite of what i was trying to do).so much so that the young woman...who didn't want to be a burden,or affect my life in a negative way...left my home, and wrote me she would never come back, because she loved me and didnt want to cause problems.

two weeks later she was found dead in motel room.over dose of piankiller and xanax...and wrists slashed to ribbons.

or how about the time one of my girlfriends broke three of my ribs, because i was being kind to a waitress?

or the time another girlfriend stabbed me,because while she was unhappy with our relationship, she could not abide me talking to anyone who owned a vagina.in this case a fellow artist i was collaborating with, and who happened to be not only an amazing human being but beautiful as well.

or that one time, when i broke up with a girl, because it simply was not working out and she repeatedly rammed her ford fairmont station wagon into my brand new firebird?

oh..the stories i can tell about all my wonderful relationships, and the women i have shared portions of my life with.i could write a book...

and then i watch this video, and i am overcome with an urge to drive cross country to the creators home, walk inside, grab him by the ankles and crag him outsides....and beat him senseless.

because he is coming from a false premise.
he is implying the that the benefits of relationships outweigh he selective memory our brains create when reliving our moments of singlehood.

when the reality is this:as long as you have friends, who love and accept you for who you are,you are never actually single.you are surrounded and loved by an extended family.

i do not need a girlfriend.
i do not want a girlfriend.
i am not interested in getting married.
and as i have revealed here,i would prefer some memories to remain buried under the much happier and adoring memories of my actual friends who put up with my eccentricities, and my overall oddness, rather than deal with a woman who is smitten with the ideas fed to them by institutions, and periodicals such as comsopolitian and vogue.

though, ironically,i have two ex girlfriends living in my home as i write this.
one is a former porn star, and current stripper who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, and is a recovering addict.

while the other i had to go do a midnight rescue from a place where she was renting a room, but the house was junkie house, and she is a recovering addict as well (and they also kept stealing everything from her).she has bought a house, but it needs work and that work is taking fooooooorever.

and BOTH of these women still harbor some residual feelings towards me.even though i have been quite clear, open and honest that i have ZERO interest in rekindling anything, with either of them, but that hasn't stopped them from being all catty with each other, and causing drama, and complaining about the smallest, tiniest and most ridiculous of things to bitch about.

at first i tried to play referee.
i did my best to help everyone get along, until i realized they both had no interest in getting along.they wanted to outdo the other in order to get my attention.

which is just.....dumb..but anyways,my new way of handling their insipid complaints is always this response:i don't care.

and it seems to work beautifully.

so there you have my story,or at least part of it.
and i have to say...this guy is kinda full of shit.

for those of you happily married, with a great partner,i salute you.good for you,and i mean that.

but for me?
no thanks.i am good.

An interesting thesis but, like any philosophy taken to the extreme, ultimately fails to serve the public good. If we are all entirely free to decide what constitutes government "oppression" and when to resist it, the end state is anarchy. Although he vilifies politicians, they are elected as representatives of the people - if the people are unhappy with the actions of the politicians, they are free to, and it is incumbent on them to, participate in the electoral process to remove those politicians. If they choose not to do that, then they have no basis on which to complain.

The Original Trump Haters

"My my... hit a nerve did she."

Are you attempting to ask a question?

But really, on this super left wing dominated site it isn't a surprising "question".

Samantha Bee is sometimes funny but usually not.

This segment was moderately humorous. Of course pick any major development in the world and there will almost definitely be multiple people unhappy with it. This isn't something that is unique to Trump developments. Furthermore finding (and cherry picking for your segment) people that hate Trump - or any other politician - isn't hard either.

Obamacare in Trump Country

Fairbs says...

so are you saying that most of the over 20 million people that now have health care were forced? personally I don't think the vast majority of them are unhappy; there's only a very small part of the people that are seeing above average rate increases (about 3% if I remember correctly) and rate increases have been slowing overall; I know it's more complicated, but I would say focus on fixing that 3% and quit trying to burn it down

I do think there are a lot of liberal leaning people on here, but I don't think the door is closed meaning I'd be fine with more people and more varied ideas; I think most of the conversations are pretty respectful except for this one guy and he says some pretty crazy things; I think he may be just a troll anyway

worm said:

This place (videosift) seems to be filled with a plethora of liberal ideals and videos about liberal ideals.

This is all just my opinion, but here it is none the less:
The simple reason these people voted Trump is these people don't WANT hand-outs and government cheese. But what they do want is someone who they feel will put the USA first and bring back jobs. They, for whatever reason, felt that would Trump over Hillary. If they had to hang Obamacare on a cross and sacrifice it to improve their long-term economic standing, then so be it.

It isn't like they really LIKED Obamacare, they were just FORCED to buy it.

Obamacare in Trump Country

TheFreak says...

Holy cow!

So anyone with a history of having health insurance over the past decades knows the pain of annual rising costs and plan changes that offer less and less coverage.

But here we have people newly signed up on health care through the ACA, who experience rising costs and deductibles for the first time and believe it's because the program is no good.

It never even occurred to me that all the pre-existing problems in the health insurance industry would be viewed as unique to ACA.

We are ALL unhappy with what's been happening to our health insurance for the past couple of decades...you're experiencing the same pain we've all been dealing with for long before the ACA was created. This didn't start the day you first qualified for health insurance. How did the message get so mixed up?

And wtf!
You've never had a car...here's a car.
"The cost of gas keeps going up....the car you gave me is horrible."

Corporate Media Goes ALL OUT To Hide Clinton WikiLeaks

Drachen_Jager says...

So... here's my take on the election.

The US is a car. Most people are unhappy with the direction the car is taking them, because it's been going that way for decades and they don't see any improvement, if anything things are getting worse. Now, the drivers have been by and large the same for the past 30 years or so, different name, same direction, some take shortcuts, some take a leisurely route, but the overall direction has remained the same.

This election cycle people look at Hillary and think (rightly) she's NOT going to take us in a better direction. So many of them choose Trump, because he's at least going to turn the car, maybe even take it back the way the country came (that's what he says). He points to the right and says, "Let's go that way!" And many people agree, without even looking in the direction he points because they figure any change is better than no change. Meanwhile, the majority takes a more measured approach, they actually LOOK where he's pointing and see they're at the edge of a cliff and he wants to drive off.

Who are you going to vote for?
