Unblocking a blocked sewer connection at a manhole

radx says...

At least the plug's only at the end of the pipe.

At my parents' house last year, the pipe connecting the manhole to the actual sewer below the street was clogged. Which isn't so bad, unless nobody really notices it and the sewage just keeps collecting in the manhole. After pumping a good 1.5m³ of delicious sewage out into the nearby bushes (smells great at ~25°C), I went down into the underworld (again, great smell). Found the pipe in question and managed to insert a hose with backwards-firing jets into it, connected to a high-pressure washer. The bloody blockage was 6m into the pipe. Probably grease and fat from the kitchen sink, most of all. Anyway, half an hour of bumping into it over and over again finally cracked it.

Not the most pleasant experience. No cockroaches though, so there's that.

For a quick second I saw the chick who smashed the hammer and I thought, "didn't we just have an Underworld movie?". This looks great and it does seem to have a real Guardians feel to it.

A PC Gamer's Worst Nightmare

Heh... I remember gaming when frames per second wasn't even a thing yet. Ultima Underworld on a 386 anyone? Or better yet, how about Midwinter on an Atari ST? Kids are spoiled these days.

Classic DOS games roundup, circa 1995

shagen454 says...

Yeah, I've played games from Obsidian and InXile... I'm hoping the next Planescape game lives up to it's potential. Both Wasteland 2 and Pillars of Eternity were good but definitely not classics. Baldur's Gate 2 is still such a monolithic classic.

Otherside just announced System Shock 3 so that should be interesting, also the Ultima Underworld game sounds very exciting. It'd be cool if they could get the rights to Thief since no one has been able to come up with one as good as 1&2.

I have had the honor of working with some people from both BlackIsle and LookingGlass. You can find BlackIsle folk split between InXile and Obsidian Entertainment, and you can find a new LookingGlass-inspired studio (with a lot of the old crew) at Otherside Entertainment.
It's interesting to see how the right combination of people can produce such magic, because it's not like those developers have gone anywhere. But hopefully that's good news if you follow some developers for the sake of pedigree.

Inside The Yakuza

Asmo says...

Because without such reverence, he would never have been given access...

He might actually feel deep respect for them or he might despise them, but you don't get access to criminal underworlds by walking up to them and insulting them.

Why is shit like this presented with such reverence? For all the ceremony and posh suits these are criminal thugs. They aren't just some other culture that does things it's own way and has finally accepted the guy as one of their own, they know exactly what they are and what they're doing.

I'm sure he got a very interesting look at the way a very secretive society is run. There will be a lot that he's seen and photographed that the rest of the world won't know about or have seen before. It's interesting, I get that, but I think it would be all the more interesting if juxtaposed with the bad stuff. Show the photos of them there, all solemn in their suits, but don't forget the kids who are starving to death as their parents rot in prison or are killing themselves slowly in some disgusting drug den somewhere, paying for everything the Yakuza have.

Everything they have is built on death, pain and suffering of others.

Jeff Bridges Tells About Prank On Lebowski Set

Gutspiller says...

Depends on how much she knew of the joke. 7 years old seems a bit young for the birds n bees talk, or where hair is going to grow on her body when she grows up. Seems somewhat innocent, but could also lead into other things.

I'm just saying that it's a parents duty to protect their children, and while funny to grown ups, such things could lead into experimentation or google searches of a 7 year old that could introduce her into things that you may not want a 7 year old knowing about just yet.

Still... each parent is entitled to parent how they want. I wouldn't be introducing the "door" into an underworld that I wouldn't want my 7 year old exposed to in the first place.

Elite: Dangerous - Beta 3

shagen454 says...

This has been a damn good year for games even though a lot of the games that should have been good were really sort of rehashes/boring with subpar indie games, Ubisoft reskinning Assassin's Creed for every franchise (I'm looking at you Shadow of Mordor) and then there are all of the bland ass MMO's that looked decent but ended up sucking (Wildstar, ArcheAge). Not that they're bad, theoretically they are decent games but they just don't have the innovation or oomph.

I've NEVER spent $75.00 on a game needless to say a beta, but E:D is definitely worth it. It's my top game of the year (even in beta form). Closely followed by Divinity: Original Sin (fucking awesome RPG), Legends of Grimrock II (fucking awesome old school dungeon crawler (Ultima Underworld / Myst puzzler), Wasteland 2 (awesome Wasteland comeback) as well as Alien: Isolation (great concept, nailed the visuals & sound -- super intense). And then there was Hearthstone which I definitely spent more time playing than anything else.

But, Elite: Dangerous is stunningly brilliant, best sound I've ever heard in a game- it's so fucking good that I invested in a HOTAS & Oculus Rift (haven't gotten it yet though).

Downloading the update now - can't wait to see the changes.

I, pet goat II

Phreezdryd says...

The overall message looked to me like all the evils of the cold, harsh world being shown while Jesus passed through the underworld, but once he woke up the sun came out and was destroying the past. The church crumbles, pyramids are destroyed, etc. A new dawn or awakening of mankind? The apocalypse? Seemed like a sort of pro-christian message, with only the return of Jesus putting things right, or at least destroying whatever the human race had done in his absence.

Total Recall 2012 Teaser Trailer

spoco2 says...

I'm perplexed that no-one here is pointing out that the original PKD story was really short.... and had alien mice, and was called 'We can remember it for you wholesale'. The Total Recall movie took the tiny nugget and spun a whole thing from it.

Depending on whether this is more based on the movie or the short story it can veer off in all sorts of directions.

But being that it's directed by the Underworld guy and Beckansale is in it, it'll be crap

Just because you CAN, it doesn't mean you SHOULD

You may like this as well, THIS song ! I relentlessly tell people about.

The " heaven heaven " stuff irks me a bit, but everything else is fantastic, and the bass...

My car sounds so good when this song plays, you cannot hear it with ordinary speakers but if you have a subwoofer, you can turn up the bass and hear a whole different aspect to the song.

duna duna duna woma woma woma woma hahaha, that bass track is sweet.
