America really flew the U-2 spy plane off aircraft carriers

vil says...

The U2 required more than a mile of runway to land and it was not just about slowing down, it was actually very difficult to navigate to a (static) runway.

I have no clue why anyone would think a U2 could land on a carrier.

I see no reason why it could not take off from a carrier.

America really flew the U-2 spy plane off aircraft carriers

newtboy says...

Unconvinced.
Why would they try to land on an aircraft carrier, breaking the plane every single time by scraping the wingtips off on the deck? In air refueling means it would never be required, and a total lack of stealth makes it just stupid, landing strip width makes it incredibly difficult to land a plane over 3 times the wingspan of an F16, especially one as in precise and hard to fly as a u2….and impossible to store off the deck, making the carrier useless until the U2 was removed.

On land they had chase cars that drove under the wings at landing, installing the wheels and/or keeping the tips off the ground.

Not trusting this internet source…beware unknown sources.
There’s a reason there wasn’t one shot of a successful landing, the best they had was a 3 point landing with the wing as point 3. At best this was a failed test, not a functional program.

Actually it's pretty sickening seeing them with the American Flag. They have "captured the flag" as their symbol of what America is.

If you fly the American flag now you can pretty much be assured that you've labeled yourself as a republican.

They need to choose one of the two flags because they both stand for a different thing.

Pretty damned sickening to see a Confederate flag in the US capitol.

I think U2 said it best:

"This song, Charles Manson stole from the Beatles. We're stealing it back." -- Bono

@BSR, the video made clear why that, like the OK hand gesture, are racist. In a vacuum, you're correct, that statement is as true as all your other examples, but we don't live in a vacuum, and that slogan is purely racist and is intended to be just that. Bob would like us to all ignore that and think as you suggest...because that allows his racist brethren to spout their racism and claim morality and righteousness, but privately among the like minded, they're gleeful about cucking the libtards and getting away with public racism, shielded by the intentional misrepresentation of their meanings.

Riverdance first performance, was as an intermission act

TheSluiceGate says...

I genuinely can't overstate the effect that this single performance had on Ireland as a country.

I saw this on VHS the afternoon following broadcast, pre-internet, pre-twitter, the grape vine was aflame with this being a must-see event. Of course I considered myself far too cool to have seen it broadcast during the Eurovision, but curiosity got the better of me. I finally agreed to watch it as my father was raving about it and wanted to show it to me on tape.

Hear that roar of approval at the end? That's the sound of Ireland, as a nation, spurred on by it's World Cup success, it's newly booming economy, the success of The Commitments, and the global stardom of U2, finally letting go of the collective cultural shame it felt for it's diddle-eye bullshit past, reinventing itself and saying "You know what, we *are* fucking great, and our culture is something to be proud of".

I think nationalism and patriotism are bullshit. But here, now, 25 years later, it's genuinely just brought a tear to my eye for what probably will not be the last time.

German Train makes Music

oritteropo says...

Well it is an electric train... I did mean to put the info into the description, but only put it in the tags.

The train is a Siemens Taurus, ES 64 U2. According to Jimbo's big bag'o'trivia, it has a top speed of 230 km/h, although there is a really similar model which proved itself quite a bit faster at 357 km/h in testing prior to delivery. It also says it has a quill drive, but I'm not really sure what that means or why it would reduce track forces.

That has to be some sort of electrical motor that is making that sound, wouldn't you think?

U2 interview with Kimmel, plus surprise ending

CrushBug says...

*promote

I remember talking to my cousin, when I was very young, and I said I didn't know who U2 was. He went to his shelf, grabbed Boy, War, and The Unforgettable Fire, and said "Listen to these, and don't bother talking to me until you do."

A defining moment for me, growing up.

Why can't I watch Youtube videos in fullscreen? (Wtf Talk Post)

U2 "Two Hearts Beat As One" 1983

lurgee says...

War was the album where I started. I bought everything before it. I have at least 3 remixes of this song. One is a unreleased promotion 12" 45 rpm. Remained a huge fan until Unforgettable Fire which is my favorite album. I also have 3 U2 4Play packs(4 45 rpms). One containing some tracks yet to be released digital from their Boy era.

U2 ZooTV Outside Broadcast opener

poolcleaner says...

I love this era of U2. The end of the Brian Eno production days. To be honest, anything before The Unforgettable Fire and after Zooropa is outside my listening zone. Eno changed the band and that's no embellishment, you can find interviews all about how Brian Eno was uncertain about the collab but Bono was so on fire about him being the producer, he was willing to change the direction of the band simply to have him produce.

Irish People Taste Test Thanksgiving Food

ulysses1904 says...

My first trip overseas from the U.S. was to Dublin in 1991 and I was enthralled by the Irish people, their accent, the street signs in Gaelic and pretty much everything else. It was great to be in the land of James Joyce, the Pogues, Clannad and U2. I almost had to remind myself at first that this is not some kind of Disneyland exhibit, that this is the way they are and have always been. Then I bought a "sausage roll" from a snack shop which turned out to be a big chunk of spam. Brought me right back to reality.

It's not a huge collection. Mainly 12" remixes and a few promotional ones. My treasure is three U2 4pack 7" vinyl. Consisting of early demos from "Boy" to my fav "The Unforgetable Fire". I have only seen one one eBay. A few of the tracks have never been offered on digital or on cd format. You are welcome. Post some more music. They never get many votes. I enjoy sharing music and always crave new sound.

Sure you do doll, since we are music twins!! I am so jealous you have them on vinyl!! I so want to "sift" through your collection, and would probably exclaim "Holy shit, no way!!" about a thousand times while doing so! As always, thanks for the promote and quality!!!
