Stepping away from everything, I'm so damn sorry that happened to you. I've been in that position and I never had what was stolen returned--vintage coats, purses, instruments. It made me feel helpless and I hate that more than anything. And it's happening to you when your support network is not there for you, and that's even worse. Take them to small claims court and I know it sounds useless, but complain to the Better Business Bureau. If they do it often, it'll add up and have an effect.

In reply to this comment by Issykitty:
Yeah, and excuse me, but I am kind of upset, probably due to my hubby being out of town at length and being an raging hormonal cauldron. Oh, and I just moved and the movers stole something from me. I probably shouldn't be looking at stupid blogs that piss me off.

Oh no! Australia is melting!

The new Olympic sport: Cunt Punching!

thumpa28 says...

On the bright side she wont be reproducing anytime soon.

*If I was vaguely interested in voting, it would be a downvote, not because I have anything major against the video, but because of the annoying twaddle being peddled by people like Larsarus above. Seriously, look at what youre feeling strongly about, a womans right to be punched in the cunt whilst under the influence. Writing paragraphs about how right that is suggests you need to step away from the interweb.

The Biggest Company You've Never Heard Of

NetRunner says...

>> ^Lawdeedaw:

How about this--it is both small governments and big government's fault!

I'll go you one better -- the very game of making this about "big" vs. "small" is to make sure nobody spends any time demanding that the people responsible actually do a better job.

>> ^imstellar28:
We as a cultural group are not making decisions about the kind of world we want to live in, we are subcontracting it to a small majority who are choosing not to make this fleeting existence a better place for all, but rather a richer place for themselves.

Right, which is why we as a society should stand up and demand a better government, instead of a "smaller" government. People need to realize that all that means is turning over government functions to private entities whose explicit goal is to make themselves richer, while expecting that it will somehow result in making this fleeting existence a better place for all. That's a step away from the desired state, not towards it.

Japan's Nuclear Meltdown Issue Explained

Ornthoron says...

It surely stops the explanation a little too early. What they didn't say is that the outer shell, which is what was damaged in the explosion, is not part of the containment system at all, but is just there to keep the weather out. There are still security systems in place for a meltdown.

The concrete containment is still intact, so in case of a meltdown the radioactive waste would gather in the bottom of the containment vessel. Sure, it's time consuming and expensive for the company to clean up afterwards if this happens, but you are still several steps away from radioactive elements contaminating the outside environment.

The Neighbourhood Experiment

rottenseed says...

Does making a joke about something, make it ok to do? Let's look passed the fact that it was a pedestrian joke. Blankfist could've done a lot better. Does that make blankfist a wife beater? No, only shitty at making jokes. But we knew this about him. He's been trying to be funny for 3 years on this website. He's had a couple of hits but even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once-in-a-while.

You say there are some jokes off limits, I say there are none. Who is right? Well, neither, or both.

For the record, I hope Blankfist's fiancee beats the living shit out of him.

I seem to have set off the Libertarian crowd.
Maybe this is just a failure of empathy on the part of rottenseed and blankfist. And of the two people who, so far, have upvoted rottenseed's comment.
Are you aware that people stay in horrifically abusive situations in part because of the internalized message "I deserve this"? The abuser uses the words "You made me do it" to justify the continuation of attacks? [Please note that I have left out pronouns. This is non-gender specific -- it is rooted in the roles of abuser and victim.]
Well, actually, you are aware. Clearly.
Look, just imagine for a second that you are a survivor or a current victim of spousal abuse. Can you just imagine, for a moment, what it would feel like to watch this video, feel like maybe you could get help, that something is wrong with your situation, and then immediately stumble across blankfist's comment?
If spousal abuse -- and sexual abuse -- weren't so common, then blankfist's post would be crude and maybe funny. As it stands, it has the potential of actively hurting someone's recovery or ability to step away from a very bad situation.
And please note that I didn't demand the pulling of the posting. Self "censorship" isn't censorship if it is an act of kindness to a stranger.
Leave it up. It's clearly up to you. Just be aware of the possible consequences. Know that you might be complicit in the continued suffering of someone.
Hopefully the person(s) I am concerned about will keep reading and see this defense of them. This acknowledgment that what you posted is not true. And not funny.
I look forward to the day when it IS funny. When abuse is so uncommon. When victims of abuse leave the first time something abusive happens to them and aren't trapped by their own internal messages.

Solar Highways!!!

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

This is definitely one of those ideas that could only work on paper. Is it "possible"? Sure - we could make a bunch of glass roads. Would they work as billed? A little yes but mostly no. Would it be affordable compared to asphalt or concrete? Definitely not..

Solar power is just one of those things that people refuse to admit is just a pipe dreams because the idea is so romantic. It conjures up mental images of the Jetsons where power is free and everyone is flying to work on their solar powered suitcase cars. The brutal reality of solar power is that it is incredibly expensive, terribly inefficient, and hobbled by battery technology which itself is about one step away from pointed sticks. The limitations make solar power unlikely to ever have any role except as a tiny niche of the energy market.

Christopher Hitchens has cancer!

curiousity says...

First and foremost, I hope Hitchens is able to recover from this. I saw the poor recovery percentages and can only hope that they caught it early.

I don't agree with Hitchens on everything and I think sometimes he is a pompous ass, but his passion, wit, and intelligence drew me to seek out more of him. He has been a prominent figure in giving definition to my thoughts.

Salute!

*********

After watching the video, it seems like this guy respects Hitchens and sounds sincere. I understand that some people would see him mentioning the wish that Hitchens would converted at the end as malicious, but I disagree. Again, I think he is coming from a sincere point of view. Would he be happy with a deathbed conversion? Of course! He believes that Hitchens won't be saved unless he converts. Despite my desire, my parents have become more fundamentalist over the years due to (in my estimation) very limited sources of information. My dad believes strongly, but when he does something it is out of compassion of trying to save someone; however, he doesn't force his beliefs on anyone or any issue. The difference is that people who try to force "saving" on other people are doing it for themselves, not the people they are trying to "save". Or just plain d*cks or trolling like QM.

In a way, it is quite ironic that some people here watch this video are so wrapped in their own world, their own perceptions that they twist the video so much. Not that I'm immune to being affected by my perceptions, but seriously people - step away from the mindless dogpile of knee-jerk rejection based on your beliefs.

And on a slightly different subject: If I had cancer, I don't think other people praying would do a thing to cure the cancer. It could have one small effect of boosting my spirits from realizing that so many people cared for me. Many years ago, some serious shit went down in my life and my life, frankly, was looking like it was going to take a huge change for the worse. I was very depressed and despondent. At that point, many people wrote character witness letters. Apparently they were very good letters. It was amazing what people wrote and my attitude improved greatly. I have ~50 letters that are still in my desk. After 9 years, I can still only get through about half of them before it's too much. My point is that if taking an action can have a positive mental effect on the receiver and the giver, let them express it. People express compassion in different ways and the more they want to express compassion, the more they want the recipient to really, truly know how deeply and sincere they feel. Those actions can vary widely. Stop being so fucking selfish that you won't allow people to express compassion in the way they know how.

In conclusion, I thought this was wonderful and should be repeated:
>> ^SDGundamX:

I'm going to borrow Georgia Harkness's argument from her book above that when we pray for others at the very least we are taking a moment from our mostly self-centered lives in order to cultivate compassion for another human being. Personally, I think regardless of whether or not intercessory prayer works, it no more a waste of time than saying "I hope he gets better." It's an act of humanity and compassion to feel for a fellow human who is suffering.

Afghanistan: We're f*#!ing losing this thing

volumptuous says...

Again. This is why I have WP on ignore.

The ignorance is so entrenched it is breathtaking. Listening to some war-mongering, western white dude pontificate about the destruction of innocent peoples countries and calls for mass slaughter is inhuman and disgusting. It makes me sad to be a human.

His constant need to somehow keep cracking about Obama shows just how much prejudice and hatred he has for humans. If only people like him would step away from their keyboards, gun-up, and go kill those innocent people they hate for no reason other than American dominance, would still not be a step in the right direction.

To people like this, only wholesale slaughter of innocent people, will ever be good enough. To watch their blood run in the gutters of their already decimated lives, is the only thing that will ever be able to bring a smile to their ugly faces.

This is the worst of human nature. Neverending war for no reason at all.

And AGAIN: WP shows he has no fucking knowledge whatsoever of Afghanistan. To ask him what the difference is between a Pashtun or a Tajik is would send him scrambling to Wikipedia. But only to momentarily pontificate on how glorious it is to kill one or the other. But in his mind, just kill them all. Their blood all spills the same, and his doesn't.

Buckingham Palace Guard play themes from 4 Star Trek series

RadHazG says...

Correction Arvana - It's 4 themes total. I don't believe the last 15sec or so is an actual theme just a tie up of the overall feel of each.
Star Trek : Original Series, Star Trek : Deep Space 9, Star Trek : Voyager, last one is Star Trek : The Next Generation

I was somewhat embarrassed to realize I recognized each of them within 2sec of the opening notes. But then ST:OS is all over the place, ST:DS9 is probably my favorite theme (if not show) and ST:Voy was probably almost my favorite series just barely under ST:TNG.

These gentlemen do a massive credit to the themes, played just beautifully. Also, I'm about 80% convinced that a large part of the reason ST:Enterprise failed so miserably (besides the show itself) is that it was the first series to step away from the grand brass orchestral opening and instead went with that piss ant contemporary music crap. How can you feel as if your actually in ST or about to set off on a grand adventure with THAT crap as the start? Go listen to the ST:Enterprise theme after this and see if you aren't immediately turned off to the series just based on the opening theme alone.
